Question:  How much stake or say does Bruce actually have in all this SMiLE release hoopla?  I know he was at the sessions but what's his holding in Brother or Capitol when it comes to SMiLE material?

He has acetates. As for any say, as he's not a voting member of BRI, I'm guessing none at all.

Judging from quotes from Bruce which people have posted here, it sounds like he is a complete spectator just like the rest of us on TSS.

Right.  Brother is owned by Brian, Mike, Al and Carl's estate.  This fact was confirmed in the BRI v. Jardine litigation a few years back...

"Currently, BRI is equally owned by four shareholders, who are also its directors:  Al Jardine, Mike Love, Brian Wilson, and the estate of Carl Wilson."

Who's in charge of Carl's estate?

Apparently, Carl's sons, Justyn and Jonah.

"It was that case, set for trial next month, that was settled this week, said Carla DiMare, who represents the Carl Wilson estate, consisting of his two sons, Justyn and Jonah."

So with all the legendary fame of SMILE, can we speculate how well it will actualy sell?  I'd certainly like to see this release make some noise and receive it's rightful due.

I'm a bit concerned about the casual BB fan that will read the hype, expect the earth then go out and buy it and then complain. For that reason I don't mind if it is a low key release and word of mouth alone sells the project to those who will appreciate it.

BTW. If I can speculate on a few release dates.

Labor Day. 50 years since that weekend.
November. 50 years since the release of Surfin.

or my personal choice. August 9. My 50th! Wink

A left over from the Ego board. At one point you didn't have to register so anyone who posted without signing in got a 'Anonymous' tag. Got a bit confusing during one heated topic with several 'Anonymous' posters and all unsure who we were replying to. From memory, someone then registered the username 'Anonymous'. Decided I liked the tag as well so just added 'Other'.

There was also "The Original Anonymous".

You must be referring to your brother John.

It was also a nod to those that ,unlike myself and most others here, a few like AGD, Ed, Jon etc have the guts to stand by their posts and thoughts etc.
Several times I have posted something so bad that I am releaved no one knows or cares who I am!

I honestly hope that there will be educated hype surrounding this album. If the public goes into thinking this album is "fun-in-the-sun" this will probably not go well for the reviews on amazon or itunes. I hope the marketing campaign voices loudly that this is not a surf album.

I think we have to remember that this is a Beach Boys album (not a Brian Wilson album)...in name anyways. When fans of Brian Wilson buy his music they expect quirky and fun - I think this is why BWPS went over so well. However, put a Beach Boys label on this music and you are shattering a 50 year old myth that Beach Boys only did surfing songs....and people are bound to be confused (and possibly a bit pissed off).

EDIT: I really want every person on the planet listening to SMiLE, so I do want hype about it - but as I said above, I hope it is educated hype explaining to fans that this is The Beach Boys version of 'Sgt Pepper' - not Endless Summer part II or something.

To be fair, the BWPS was pretty well covered and honest in the stories I read. If it follows the same theme ie 'What the Beach Boys did when they gave up the Beach' then I will be happy with that. Of course that could limit sales however I still expect some kind of compilation this year to keep the Surfing/ Car fans happy.

August 9th is out then; Too many possibly negative memories: Dennis' (purported)ties to the murders, crooked politicians and radiation( then and now).
So, let's split the difference and go with August 30th( my celebrated anniversary).
It's not a Bad Tuesday( like the 9th), and everyone knows the (Record)companies like to make their new releases on Tuesdays.

Apparently, the "Smile" box(as it stands in tentative form), will be without the Frank Holmes artwork. A box front image has been released by Capitol and can be seen at www.imwan.com on the music forum. Apparently, Capitol is sending a message that Frank Holmes won't stop the "Smile" box from happening. As for Holmes' artwork, most "Smile" collectors have it anyhow.
Let's remember, as unfortunate as Holmes' monetary holdout is, the thing that matters most is the music, and we're going to get the music.

No, but, as I said, check the box front image released by Capitol. This can be seen at the music forum  in the "from the vaults" section at www.imwan.com
This artwork features the familiar "Smile" lettering, but none of Holmes' illustrations. As you will see, what I am saying is not just a figment of my imagination(for those of you who doubt me)

It might make it easier if you provided a more direct link.

The music forum there includes a post that itself links to an article that includes what it says is the "logo" for the sessions.

I saw the capitol released artwork. However, I wouldn't assume that because the front of the box does not have the Frank Holmes artwork that Holmes has back entirely out of the project due to monetary reasons. Pet Sounds Sessions did not have the original artwork on the box - and I know that this box will probably be 12x12 and could fit the original artwork - but they may just be saving that for the Vinyl that will be inside the box. Personally I think it is smart to have only 'The Beach Boys SMiLE" in big letters on the front of the box - it is eye-catching and if the artwork is included in the box I see no reason for it to be on the cover.

You may be 100% correct, but I don't think it's right to assume until we get more concrete information.

EDIT: Also, it was stated that this was only the "boxset" cover - not the CD cover...the CD cover may have the original artwork on the front.

I'm not sure what is described on those websites as a "logo" can be equated with album cover art work. Still, whatever it is, like Phil said, it is the music that matters most.

Hold on, people.

The Examiner article says that's the artwork, but they're merely duplicating the graphic that Capitol issued with its press release a couple weeks ago.
http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/the-beach-boys-legendary-smile-album-sessions-to-be-released-this-year-by-capitolemi-117927084.html

The very same press release says the "artwork will be unveiled soon."  If the graphic IS the artwork, wouldn't the press release say "see attached graphic" instead  of "artwork will be unveiled soon"?

Obviously the blue "THE BEACH BOYS" and red "SMiLE" on a white background is simply a rearrangement of the non-Holmes portion of the original cover.  It wouldn't necessarily be a bad cover if the Smile Shop can't be obtained, but let's not jump to conclusions.

Phil was the same one who was shouting from the rooftops that Al had retracted his statement about the sessions box set, that it was all a hoax to start with, etc.  He was very definitive that the box set was not coming out.

Just like he's very definitive about this artwork issue.
