..just thinking that the drugs might have not only helped Brian hear new sounds in his head but also give him something he never had before...Doubt.

His heavy useage of cannabis could easily have given him self doubt as well as a large dose of paranoia.

Who's talking about alternate universes ?  You. I'm talking about this one, the real one, and what actually happened.

Q. Did Capitol revise the date for the announcement of The Smile Sessions because Alan let it slip ?

A. No.

You're working from the information you're gathered, so am I.

I agree. Cannabis has its own dangers. Excess THC may cause severe feelings of being haunted, followed, and induce delusions (psychoses) in those genetically susceptible. In regard to drugs: don't ever believe the vox pop on this topic. Alcohol is a case in point. It's a hard drug by any standard. Every boozefest will destroy thousands of brain cells in those partaking. Ethanol causes traffic accidents, rows, violence, and divorces.

But still, the majority of people tend to belittle the effects of it, because it's so... good to drink regularly.

BTW, I'm no teetotaller. I like my beer. In moderation.

This entire thread's in danger of being derailed by Fishmonk's unwillingness to accept facts and a general for-against drugs & drink addiction debate (can I add caffeine to the list?).

Suggest Fishmonk buys everyone a drink and cools off.

The we get back to that box set. What was it again?

Good call. Let me help you. We will see, come October 2011, a 6 CD/2 DVD set of Paul McCartney chomping carrots. All 6 hours containing Macca chewing on tiny and large (winter) carrots will be on them, in various states of finalization. Rumour has that even the farts he produced eventually will be on there (hence the scratch 'n' sniff booklets). It will be presented as a new form of postmodern musique concréte. Of course, it won't be something for the squeamish, so only a limited run of 1,000 copies will see the light of day. On release day, Sir McCartney will do: 'Paul McCartney Presents His Dangling Carrot' at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

The accompanying DVDs will show us unrestricted, warts and all video registrations of Macca's intestine movements whilst digesting said carrots. Gastric and colonic delights galore. Medical specialists worldwide are said to be in a state of euphoria, awaiting this unique document of the former Beatle 'doing his thang', so to speak. Microscopic camera's were used in 1967 to record these internal body activities - they were designed by NASA.

The price of the box is set at $ 2,000; but you surely won't regret having ordered it.

Spoilsport! Well, if it was, then simply substitute 'carrot' with 'celery' in the above... Evil

Parts of this were incorporated in the unreleased Beatles track Carnival of Shite, I believe.

Brian never felt doubt before he took drugs? It was my impression that he was pretty much fed doubt for breakfast every morning since childhood.

Are you implying that Murray may have had some part in Brian's lack of confidence?  No, it was the drugs!  Razz

I'd buy everyone a drink, but statistically it's more dangerous than LSD and I don't want any of you guys ending up like Brian

Statistics my butt- put all different brands of LSD in every corner store in America, every bar, and every sporting event and compare the results with alcohol. Not making an excuse for alcohol, but the fact is there is no statistical evidence that would suggest that given the scenario I just mentioned that the LSD would still be less harmful than alcohol...

It was my impression that he was pretty much fed doubt for breakfast every morning since childhood.

I used "Might Have" in my choice of words... while he was able to cope with all the Bull-merda to a point, once his creative ideas got so complex, his mind frazzled with paranoia and who knows what else,  and once the band feedback started to become severely negative, PERHAPS this is when he began to believe those who would put him down...

Drugs like anything else is a double edge sword...we cannot dismiss the negative effects it had on Brian's creativity. At a point, especially when doing speed, the brain just cannot keep up with itself...

I do not believe Brian's LSD trips to be his worst drug abuse although it may have been the start of the audible hallucinations...however it was probably the crazy amounts of hash and speed that helped frazzle SMiLE to a point of no return.. My point on LSD in general is that it is not relatively harmelss. That was the Fishmonk's whole premise.

All of these "Smile" discussions have pretty much run their course, and are headed nowhere but boredom....unless Capitol & Mark Linett choose to reveal a little bit more information each month or so; in other words to occasionally toss the fans a bone to chew on; something that keeps this "Smile" enthusiasm and discussion going........ before it runs out of steam.

Can the people wishing to debate the pros and cons of drugs take it the sandbox please? It's a subject I'm interested in but has no place in the SMiLE Sessions box set thread!

I agree. Although the connection: Brian - SMiLE - drugs is an interesting one in itself, centering on 'drugs' and their merits/demerits pollutes the debate.

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

You mean over 10 years, or when did the Smile Shop go online?
SMiLE never gets boring. I guess after the new boxset, there will be even more questions.

Perhaps I will succeed in founding 'SMiLE Cultural Studies' at my University. If I'm the first, it might work out. After all, we already have a 'Philosophy Of Pop Music' three part evening course coming up this very week.

After the new box, there will be hand-to-hand fighting in the streets. Truth.
