Brian Wilson & Diane Rovell

Hi i bought Peter Ames Carlin's book Catch A Wave a week ago and was surprised to read that brian was seeing a psychologist about the guilt he felt for having a crush on his wife's sister (Diane) and that he sometimes wished he had married her. Then i found the song my diane. My question is does anyone have any information about the relationship between these two because from the song it sounds like that they were having an affair.

Back in the early 80's, The Honeys were in London doing press for their Rhino album, and I got to interview them. Nice people, great fun to be with, and being the tactful kinda person I am, I asked Diane if said song was indeed about her. She said, simply, "yes"... Marilyn, sitting next to her, nodded... and Mike Grant (editor of
Stomp
who was also doing the interview) nearly had a fit. Moral of story: don't ask, you'll never know.

Thank you thats very interesting. Do you know if the song the night was so young is about said subject or is that just hearsay?

That's supposedly about Debbie Keil (friend of Brian's in the mid '70s), right?

I might adjust that "friend" as well.

If Brian would've married Diane instead of Marilyn, would there be a thread asking if "Marilyn Rovell" was about Marilyn?
"So glad, I married the sis of Marilyn Ro-vell"...

If you want to know about Brian Wilson's relationship with Diane Rovell in the early 70's, just listen to the promo "Brian Wilson Talks With and About Spring".
Just listening to Diane's voice in that tape gives me a Woodrow.

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

That tape is just amazing. According to the conversation, a session for the album has just been completed, it's 3 or 4 in the morning, and Marilyn went to bed. Here's Brian and Diane taping themselves talking about the group, in this half-delirious, sleep deprived state. There is so much sexual tension between those two, it's just ridiculous.... they're giggling and flirting like a couple of school children. It sounds like they're about to jump each other with the tape recorder still running.
"The one you can't have is the one you want the most".... INDEED!
