I was thinkin of doing a survey on here. I once did one on E-mail through the Blue-Board and had a blast.
Basically, I'd be coming up with a list of questions that are mostly about BB, anything and everything about em.
From questions about what's your favorite album cover to what's your most prized possession of Beach Boys merch/memorabilia, what ORIGINAL bootlegs do you own (not recorded, taped, or CD-R), etc.

If this sounds interesting or fun, let me know either by sending me a PM or responding to this thread.

Thanks,
Justin

So we all know how Brian Wilson was famously really into certain musicians, most obviously Spector but also Randy Newman and maybe Fleetwood Mac to comparatively lesser extents. Who were/are some musicians that famously had an infatuation with Brian's music and his mythos, and what if any was Brian's reaction? I've heard Roy Wood is such a fan of Brian's, although I'm not sure how true it is (rather, or if he's merely heavily influenced by him, if such a difference is appreciable) as I don't really know his music at all. Any others?

Seeing as Roy leapt at the chance to play with Brian when asked back in fall 1974, I'd say he's a big fan.

I hear one James Dirk McQuickly has expressed a mild liking for Brian's music in the past. R. K. Dwight as well.

Dirk had his name changed to Dirk James McQuickly in the 1970's. And what the fuuck is up with this censorship???!!  Huh

Yeah - really juvenile, and it would have been nice to have been told, or even  asked, first. The word 'moderator' doesn't, last time I looked, mean 'imposes unilaterally'. But it's fixed now.
I'm with you Andrew, and it means more coming from you, admittedly not the world's biggest subscriber to the Beatles, although I do take it you quite enjoy Revolver?
Logged

I like the Beatles a bit more than the Boys of Beach, I think Brian's band is the tops---really amazing. And finally, I'm liberal. That's it.

Do we know who produced the original "Big Sur" recording in 4/4 time? Carl? Carl and Brian? Carl and Alan? To me it sounds very Brian-like (reminiscent of "'Til I Die" even) but then Carl was just excellent at emulating BW's signature style around that time (before heading off into an entirely different direction with Carl and the Passions of course)...

According to AGD it was recorded on 15 August 1970 together with work on "'Til I Die"----does that mean it's Brian?

Here's another totally pointless question: Does "H.E.L.P." actually mean anything? It seems to be used as an acronym both in the song title and lyrics...

I just need a bit of clarification regarding the vocals on Pet Sounds:

I know a few songs only feature Brian, "Caroline, No", "Don't Talk..." but I was wondering about "I'm Waiting for the Day" - I'm sure I read somewhere he did all the vocals to that but when I listen I can distinctly hear bass vocals that sound exactly like Mike's. Someone care to point me in the right direction?

Somewhere in my collection I have a Sunkist T.V. commercial with a rip off band doing a badly reworked version of Good Vibrations. I can't figure out if they are being serious, or doing a parody.

People refer to the Nov 1966 BW early mix of CITFOTM. What boot may one find this mix on, as I'm sure I have it on a boot somewhere would destroy such illegally acquired filth the second I laid eye upon it. But first, I must know where it is....

Seems there were a bunch of commercials using GV there; did you check them all?  ( Don't know which one you're actually referencing)

The version I have is a commercial that aired during the Long Beach 1981 special, if that helps at all

This is a weird "random" question. On each of the four corners of the "Love You" album cover, are those supposed to be birds, or just random designs?

Appears to be Native American style birds.

In regards to the same album cover: did somebody do an actual cross-stitch of the album cover or was it made on a piece of graph paper or something?

Wasn't there one on the A&E Bio of BW? I feel like I remember reading that Jeff Foskett was on that recording, or something similar, does that make sense to anyone?

Dean Torrence did it, so likely it's the graph paper option, although I have seen actual cross-stitched - and knot work - versions. Brian has one of the latter.

Was Dean seriously into his graph paper then?

I'm guessing it was more he wasn't into cross stitch.

I don't know. He had to have something to pass the time whilst Jan made their records.

I always think Jan Berry is one of the most underrated of the 60's producers. In-house before the Beach Boys as well. Not a popular opinion I know, but Jan Berry's recordings sound better than Brian's up to about 65'. I'm talking purely about sound quality, not arrangements or anything else.  Jedi Duel

Weren't both guys taking college courses for most of their career? I know Jan was Pre-Med in the mid-60s. Also, was Jan producing before he met Brian and doing the Surf City album?

Jan was producing very early on, I'd have to check. I know that when he died Brian cited him as having been a big influence, production wise. I think he's always been overlooked, and undervalued in the BB story. I know their choice of music wasn't always great, and they were certainly imitators as opposed to innovators, but the guy did cut some great tracks. He always managed to get a great drum sound when most other producers/bands of the day struggled to get the kick drum to even sound in the recording (listen to BB's from the same period).

And don't get me started on Curt Boetcher as being undervalued. Brian may have had his rediscovery and reaffirmation, but Curt's is long overdue. If anyone has not heard The Millenium - Begin, then I cannot recommend it enough. One of the 60's greatest albums, IMO
