I was thinkin about how the Pet Sounds liner notes describe who played what instrument for each song, yet not too many other albums give us this kind of information. I think 15 Big Ones has it on the back of the album, I'm sure there's a couple of other albums with the players/instruments.

Anyways, I was wondering if we could get a "Definitive Instrument/Player Thread" going. Even if we can't get who played what on some of the later albums or so, we could at least get what instruments were on each song by listening. Just thought I'd throw that idea out there.

I recently heard a song called Happy Birthday America that has Mike on lead but can't find any information on it, can someone help please?

Hidden track on the Fourth Of July - A Rockin' Celebration Of America thing that Mike put together in 1986 from the 1984/85 DC 4th July shows - the only mention was in an insert and a little sticker on the shrink-wrap. Credited to "Mike Love & friends".

I actually enjoy the tune.
There's far more Mike songs I like on his "solo" stuff than his stuff on BB-released material, I think.

So compared to any other band I've listened to, The Beach Boys are the only ones who had basically incessant talking over many of their records (songs like Do It Again, half of Pet Sounds (the album) is full of talking*) - did Brian consciously do this as a joke? I mean, he was known for his perfectionism but his records are full of banter and noises...

*Right in the beginning of 'I Just Wasn't Made For These Times (mono)' (starting exactly at the 5 second mark and going through the 8 second mark) there is a noise of what sounds like a flock of chickens making noise - does anyone know what this is?

You're right about how much noises and talking there is...Perhaps, back then, while he was "perfecting" the production, it was harder to erase those certain noises and conversations and coughs (Thanks to whoever had a cold during Wendy!)

Brian was/is a perfectionist when it comes to the music itself that's recorded and the performance that's recorded...doesn't necessarily mean he was an engineering perfectionist. Smiley   If he WERE such a perfectionist, he wouldn't have re-used older tapes and instead would have used fresh tape for each session. I'm sure this is the explanation for the various noises we hear -- the distant talking during the second half of "Surf's Up," the tape rewinding on IJWMFTT, the camera flash on "Here Today," etc. Poorly erased tape.

Does Brian now or has Brian ever seriously talked about his productions? Not in some vague way where people ask him whether or not he's a genius, I mean has anyone ever asked him some fairly technical or in-depth questions about, say, this or that sound getting it to be the way it was and such stuff? Does he enjoy these sorts of conversations? Of course I realise, as AGD and others have pointed out, Brian does not dwell on the past so once some project is done it's out of his mind but... well, I'm curious!

Are you certain about all these examples? I was under the impression that the camera flash chat on "Here Today" occurred when band members were waiting for the instrumental section to complete to provide overdub backing vocals. The mics were left open and the fader on that track left up during the final mix.

The talking on "Surf's Up" was reportedly due to dubbing it down to a master reel that had been previously used and had not been fully erased. An earlier generation of the completed mix was found about ten years ago and this is what's been used on all subsequent releases (so, the version heard on THE WARMTH OF THE SUN compilation is cleaner than what was heard on the '93 GV Box Set).

Where can I get information about the different Beach Boys (STOMP) and other conventions of the like?
Basically, info on where it was, when it was, who was there of BB-Universe? What could one find there? What events took place? Was there a marketplace to buy "certain things? Any pics from the events? I know there's some video footage like Brian singing the Spirit of Rock and Roll in the early 90s.

Basically, what did I miss out on when either I wasn't born yet or old/knowledgable enough to go to a convention?

BTW, I did go to two Star Wars (Celebration II/III) Conventions when they were in Indy, great time! I met Billy Dee Williams and Boba Fett there.

Where were the strings found for the new intro for Lady (Flowers Come in the Spring)?

Was it taken from the song and just took everything out except the strings and pasted on for the intro?

Not that I've seen (maybe a little bit in the Pet Sounds Box Set interviews, but that wasn't overly technical), although I have a feeling that if you got him going, he'd enjoy talking about that more than 95% of the usual crap he's been getting asked for almost 50 years.

Stomp took place from 1979 - 2009 (usually 2nd Saturday in September) and there's supposed to be another one this year. Always tables of stuff to buy, some of more dubious legality than others. Can't recall all the guests, but of course we had Brian in 1988, and others were Tony Asher, Billy Hinsche, Andy Paley, Marilyn Wilson-Rutherford, Fred Vail, David Marks, Dom Priore, Barbara Wilson & Annie Wilson-Karges, Jack Rieley (via video link). Later, if you want, I'll post dates and guests - got to look for the SWD interview anyway.

Beach Boys Britain used to have regional gatherings around the country late 90s/early 2000s, and also an annual BB weekend in Edinburgh. They were fun, especially the Scottish shows.

There were also two official BBFUN conventions in 1979 (LA) and a few years later (Cleveland ?), and two early 90s LA ESQ gigs, 1990 & 1992 (Brian doing "SOR&R" is from the first one, I think). I know David Beard has organised some more ESQ East Coast meeting in recent years, hopefully he can supply info.

But, without a shadow of a doubt, the finest BB fan gathering ever was February 20th-27th in London. The house band wasn't too shabby, either.  Grin

The latter - it was Mark (and Alan) taking some artistic license. I like this mix a lot, but I feel they should have gone a little further and kept the added strings going right up to the point where the original strings come back in; having the strings drop out under the drum machine makes the song lose momentum.
