Oh, I know where Mike was going with "Bachelor of bullets", but it was just the wrong tone for the song. As I mentioned above, that line in particular manages to demean the victims of the incident. Overall, it's kind of a mushy viewpoint; you really can't tell if Love thought the National Guard shooting students was a good thing or a bad thing.

Always thought "The pen is mightier than the sword/But no match for a gun" line was great. The rest of the lyrics not so much.

When hearing this, it made me realise how much Getcha Back sounds like Hungry Heart...hmmm, is that Mike being influenced/inspired or stealing?   But if it's stealing, would it be in the same ballpark as Brian taking Sweet Little Sixteen and turning it into Surfin' USA?

I've heard like 4 different versions of Almost Summer, there's the demo with Brian's voice, the version on the soundtrack, a version with what I thought had Mike's regular version with Brian's voice added in, and then what seems like an adult version of Almost Summer with lyrics that kinda match the song, I don't care for it much....but my question is about that last version I mentioned, what's up with it? Why and when was it recorded? I'd look on AGD's website but I dont know what to look for besides Almost Summer, would it be alternative version?

Mike & Celebration recorded a lot - maybe two dozen - custom versions for various radio stations around the US: I've got WMMS Cleveland, KFRC San Francisco and KRTH Los Angeles (the latter pressed up on a legit promo 45). A Detroit version has also been confirmed.

Also, the actual movie soundtrack version has different lyrics referring to the plotline: Almost Summer opening creduts

My interprepation of the song is: Student Demonstartion= Peaceful and OK, but once the police arrive and violence and rioting begins, then stay away or maybe get yourself killed. In hindsight it seems like sound advice.

EDIT: Also in hindsight, I think they should have just recorded it under the original title with the original lyrics, as they had been playing it in concert before the album release.

On the French Beach Boys documentary from 1970 Ed Carter just plays tamborine when Bruce is on bass.  My assumption is that what happened until bruce left the band.  Why didn't he play guitar?

and in the case of having to do with this subject, it doesn't have anything to do with the rest of the album, lyrically or musically...in my opinion, this should have been a b-side to Long Promised Road or something...and maybe a concert staple after that.

Hey! A couple of questions:

1) I recall reading somewhere that they (the BB's) borrowed from a 50's jazz tune when making "Transcendental Meditation".
True or false?

2) Where can I find a copy of the booklet about the recording of Holland issued same year? (real or pdf...)

Thanks!

Surf' Up is a mellow album. except for SDT, but I can say that about Friends until TM. So, it's not like they don't have a history of putting the out of place song in the track list.

Can't help with 1), but for 2), go here - The Flames - click on "Holland" in the left hand frame and scroll down almost to the bottom. It's not a .pdf, but the text is all there.

and the subject of the album musically & lyrically is? As far as I'm concerned, SU is all over the place on both fronts.
I honestly think it's a mellow (as someone said earlier) sound about rising and falling of man...now Surf's Up being up there with Til I Die & Day in the Life of a tree all favor a man's darkside and thought on life or lack there of. The first half of the album is more of the lighter/mellow side (besides dont go near)...I think the whole album could be an album all about Brian (besides SDT):
-Don't Go Near the Water- Brian's ecological outlook on the environment (the smog speech comes to mind)
-Long Promised Road- If I'm remembering correctly, Carl wrote this for Brian? This song's lyrics are totally fitting towards Brian...."from a SMiLE to a FRoWN"
-Take a Load off Your your Feet- particularly written by Brian and Al, (and Gary Winfrey), this shows Brian's humor side and could be considered part of the "health" material he likes to write about...hell, Brian took a load off his feet for a couple of years, didn't he?
-Disney Girls- Not saying Bruce wrote this for Brian, but it could lead one to think about Brian getting nostalgic about "how things used to be."
-Student Demonstration Time
-Feel Flows- Carl gets mystical and one would think Brian would eat this song up with it's heavy-spacey-mystical vibe.
-Lookin' at Tomorow- Al bitches about not having much money, much like Paul writing about Apple and Never getting money, just funny paper...So this could also have to do with Brian spending more than he's making on drugs and steaks.
and I think the trilogy of Brian's at the end is pretty self-exclamatory.

But then again, anyone could do this with any album and apply it to Brian in many ways, so I could see some thinkin I'm just BS-ing around...but I love thinkin about this stuff....

If Pet Sounds was a sketchbook about Brian Wilson, Surf's Up was a notebook that was passed around the group to write for Brian....but then again, that could be any of the albums post Wild Honey.

You can probably find a Holland book if you search enough. They show up now and then.
For an original SMiLE booklet, I'd imagine you'll have to wait for someone that has one to pass, or someone selling their collection, or someone that needs $$ to send their son named Brian to college...
