What's the story on the Johnny Dew (aka Brian) recording ("single") Farmer's Daughter and Lana?

Is it just him singing?

What's the name of the marimba sounding instrument that comes in at about 1:37 in the song Pacific Ocean Blues? Marimba?   Embarrassed

I think it might be my favorite part of any song ever.

Listening to the instrumental, it sounds like some sort of woodwind - it's playing the 'ba-ba-baaaaaa-ba-ba' line quite low, right? Maybe a bassoon or a clarinet.

yeah, that's the one -- i was thinking it might be a woodwind like you suggested (or maybe some sort of low flute), but it has a weird squeaky tone that i don't think fits.

Always sounded like a low flute to me, but I would concur that it's probably some kind of woodwind instrument.

Actually after talking it out I googled "bass flute" (without knowing if such a thing exists), and realized that it's the contraption that Paul Mertens plays at live shows:

i then recorded the part on my regular flute and dropped it down an octave, and it sounds just right! now i just wonder who played it on Cabin Essence...

Cool, can't wait to hear your cover - you're a braver man than I, that's for sure!

haha thanks -- it's shaping up nicely but i'm going to wait till i'm done with all of SMiLE before posting any. i've got a decent amount left to record but should be done in another month or 400 Grin

Aww don't keep us waiting too long Wink...sounds interesting!

I can't remember what site it was from, but I remember reading in my files that a recording of Let Him Run Wild was made in the mid to late 90s with Brian, Carnie, and Wendy...was this during the sessions for The Wilsons or IJWMFTT or using the backing from the Imagination album?

I'm sure the results were better than what came out on the Imagination album.

Maybe the snippet (one minute or so - I have it somewhere) that was played on a Steve Dahl show (I believe?) came from those sessions??

Has Brian ever mentioned any kind of inspiration from "I Loves You Porgy" when he wrote the track "There's So Many" ?

I don't know if there was any (or if anyone else even hears the similarities, or whether it's just me listening too much into things)

Was it Brian's idea about making Cool Cool Water intentions for a Coca Cola ad/commercial/jingle?

How can a song about how cool water is be relevant to Coke? Unless they're advertising clear Coke   Wink

I suspect that if he actually sold the song to Coke, you'd get lyrics like "In a bottle or in a glass, Coca Cola is such a gas".

It's hard to say, parts of it sound like the Imagination mix, but more of a stripped down...that's something Brian was missing on Imagination, HORNS

In the Prayer rehearsals/sessions, does anybody know what's said at about 3:30? My best read of it is, "I have to go to _______. I swear to God" followed by a "What?"

Doesn't sound at all like the Imagination mix to me, not to mention the fact that it's in a different key (which isn't necessarily proof of anything, but worth noting nevertheless).  The bigger clues are the fact that there's no organ during the verses, and horns are obviously much more prominent (which I agree were sorely missed on Imagination).

This version is IMO the best version (60's/90's). The question is - what other songs were recorded with this crispy sound - and not released? IMO - again - "Imagination" was quite lame, don't know why it turned out that way. Why wasn't this version of "LHRW" released???

I also believe Brian wanted "Smile" to be a happy, crispy, up-tempo album...

I've got thousands of questions but now I'm writing I can't think of any!

I do have a question or two about Time To Get Alone. It has to be my favourite song of all time and I cannot get tired of it! I can never find any live versions of it though, did they ever include it in a televised/recorded set? Also, I find it really hard to pick out Carl's voice in the chorus harmonies (album and alternative versions), can anyone help me out?!

I have another question. I think I have read in a few places that some fans have been lucky enough to get to meet Brian and Mike/Bruce at their shows. Is this something they both do regularly or is it quite rare? If they do have meet and greets where do you find the information? I'm going to both the BB and BW concerts in the UK.

I can answer your TTGA live questions....Brian performed it back when he was performing Smile in the set before the Smile performance...The only televised thing I can think of is the use in the the American Band doc. from the mid 80s, and I'm thinking it sounds like a different mix too, I could be wrong.

I don't know about Mike & Bruce, but Brian meet & greets are scarce, due to the mans evaporating enthusiasm and the behaviour of one orthinologically inclined poster on the Bloo...

And, if I recall correctly, not particularly well, according to AGD.

Yeah, it was way out of his range.

Brian also played it in 2002 at the CWF benefit concert.

There used to be a YouTube video of Brian performing "Time To Get Alone", and he adlibbed a line. Something along the lines of "And I'm so glad we finally had sex".  Grin
