Smiley Smile / Wild Honey =  thc + lsd + nitrous oxide

For each song...more nitrous
Before turning the record over...more smoke
(take lsd 1hr before experiment)

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

I am a newby to this forum, but I have followed this and other discussions about BW and the BB on this forum and find it all very interesting. In 1976,while in Pharmacy School,I got stuck in an advanced music appreciation class.I registered late and had to have an elective and Music 404 was all that was left. The cirriculum Music 404 consisted of a well researched paper about a composer and his works. My roomate M.B. played on weekends in an oldies band. When I told about the forthcoming paper I had to write,he got all excited and begged me to write it about SMiLE.M.B. had some bootlegged tapes of some of the sessions and when he told me the history of SMiLE,I said OK let's do it.I listened to the various SMiLE songson 20/20,Wild Honey,Surfs Up,Sunflower etc.The so called session tapes had another 10 or 12 other songs(i think)unnamed like "Welcome"-"Sail on Sailor??"a lot of instrumental stuff, more short songs,I cannot remember much about them, one had really odd sounding horns ans BW's voice muffled, there was a beautiful version of Surf's Up that was BW and piano only.Anyway there seemed to be at least 40 songs maybe more. When I heard BWPS I was disappointed because it seemed like a partial SMiLE.Question:Do you think the 2004 SMiLE was the SMiLE BW intended to release in 1967??Was the 2004 SMiLE BW's version or was it the Wondermint's version?
I made a scared C on my paper
M.B. was a SMiLE addict in "76",what with computers and the such,I wonder what MB thinks of the 2004 BWPS-that's why i will interested to listen to the new sessions box set-

You may be aware that the original 1966/67 version of "Look" contains A brief quote from a copyrighted song from the 1920's, but the 2004 "Song For Children" omits the quote. Could it be that negotiations over whether Capitol will have to pay a full songwriting royalty(versus a one-time-only fixed fee) for that 1920's song is the "small legal problem"? I suppose that Capitol could edit out the quote(which appears at least twice in "Look"), but it would be glaringly obvious to people who have collected the "Smile" bootlegs.

That would be "12th Street Rag," which is from circa the 1910s. Does it have a still-living copyright, though??? Heck, the same thing opened "Nothing From Nothing."

But if Capitol is concerned about licensing it, they'd also have to be concerned about "Gee," "You Are My Sunshine," "I Wanna Be Around," and possibly that Burl Ives song from which the lyrics and melody "Long ago, long ago" in "On A Holiday" come from.

This has been discussed at some length in the past and the consensus is pretty much there is no way 1967 Smile would have been much like BWPS (doesn't mean BWPS isn't great)...for starters: BWPS was originally conceived as a live performance of the Smile material whereas the Smile of the 60s was very much a studio album.

Of course, there is no such thing as a finished 1967 version of Smile and never will be  Smiley...so all is conjecture!

As to how much input Brian had in terms of the final sequence etc for BWPS - some people are very cynical about that, others less so.

It's all up to whether a particular song publisher wants to make a big deal over a small musical quote. Whether an open acknowledgement and a one-time fixed fee will suffice, or whether the publisher wants an entire per song/per disc royalty(which is the way the song publishing/mechanical royalties system is in the U.S.A.) is up to the publisher. We don't know why the quote from "12th Street rag" is omitted from the 2004 re-recording, but the reasons were(more likely) monetary rather than artistic.

I'd rather think it was artistic more than anything else, though; would they have needed to pay any extra licensing simply to perform those few seconds live??? How many times do you go to a concert of any size and hear covers? And coffeeshops?? The subtle silliness of "12th Street Rag" might detract from the theme of "Song For Children", know what I mean?

ADDENDUM:

Ooh..just heard from a pretty official source...while it was never discussed in depth, Brian himself decided not to include the "12th Street Rag" bits. They think it was an artistic decision. The message I got said that there were some other "bicycle rider" bits that apparently we're familiar with but for similar reasons were left out.

However, if you've never heard SMiLE on acid, then you've never heard SMiLE.

I don't want to start that whole drugs debate again, but unless you've done acid, then you have no idea how good music can sound.

Sometimes, there's very good reasons why things don't happen as quickly as we'd like, and we should be thankful for that.  People, just think of it this way....why did "Good Vibrations" take so long to make?  Because it kept getting better and better!  If it had come out in, say, May of '66, it would have been good...REALLY good.  But not as GREAT as when it finally did come out.  In other words, do you want it NOW, or do you want it to be as GREAT as it possibly can be, even if you have to wait awhile longer?  Trust me, hold your breath...you won't be disappointed.

That's clever and rich, and perhaps... a bit of a jab!

Just so you know Andrew, most people named Cohen in America have no relation
to each other. It was a name commonly assigned to immigrant jews at Ellis Island
by customs officals, because the jewish immigrants  didin't understand that they
were being asked to give their name because they understood no English..  All
the Cohen's are in reality, Sharon, Schneider, Grossman, Spielberg and so on.

Phil Cohen however is marching to a drum I don't begin to fathom, whatever his true identity.

What's Phil Cohen going to do once the SMiLE box comes out and six thousand posters and lurkers
all know Phil Cohen said nineteen hundred times there would never be a SMiLE box

I'm well aware that there are many Cohens in the US who have or had no relation to Phil (I doubt he was any kin of Mama Cass, for example) - t'was what we over here in England call "a joke", albeit with a bit of a barb.

And yes, I'm also aware that a certain immigrant entered Ellis Island as Schmel Gelbfitz and left it as Samuel Goldfish.  Grin

You know, I've tried very hard to keep my expectations in check.   I've figured that the very idea of a legitimate 'Smile' release from Capitol in a nice package with the Holmes art is cool enough that whatever is released will be fine.

But then I hear...
(1) Brian Wilson himself is 'blown away' by this package;
(2) Someone within the BW touring apparatus is whispering of never-before-heard material; and
(3) Someone close to the project promising great things and assuring us that we won't be disappointed.

It's getting damned hard to keep expectations in check.   Okay, I'll admit it.  My expectations are now, officially, sky high.  LOL

Shame, as it's never going to be released.  Roll Eyes

I mean, look at the evidence stacked against even the merest possibility:

teaser insert on RS Day release...
major articles on 3/11 in Billboard and Rolling Stone...
official Capitol press release on 3/14...
Mike's talked a lot about it...
Bruce has mentioned it...
Brian's said he's looking forward to it and was blown away...
trailer single with Mojo...
hints from most reliable sources...

Yup, it's misdirection on a scale that would make David Blaine envious. So obviously not going to happen. Ever.  There, I've said it.
