It does seem like they are going out of their way to avoid her. I wonder why? I thought they were turning every stone looking for the missing pieces.

Well, we can't assume that she hasn't been (or won't be) approached.  It's somewhat of a difficult situation, though.  Other acetate owners such as Al and Bruce are members of the Beach Boys.  Al reportedly still owns 25% of Brother Records, Inc., and Bruce is, of course, part of Brother Tours, etc.   As such, they already have skin in the game and are naturally inclined to do what they can to make the Smile Sessions (or any other Beach Boys product) as successful as possible.

An outsider in possession of material is different.  What is the motivation to share?  Money would be the logical answer, but it's a chicken-and-egg proposition.  How can Capitol value material without hearing it first?  It's quite possible that stray acetates contain nothing they don't already have.  And, though it pains me to say this, even if an acetate contained some one-of-a-kind gem that would blow the minds of the hardcore fans on this board, it's not likely that Capitol would be willing to pay a king's ransom for something that the casual fans won't necessarily miss.

The thing about the acetates is that some may have vocals that are missing from master tapes, or there could be any number of differences
in mixes or performance. By virtue of Van Dyke being around all  the time, he undoubtedly was in possession of more acetates than the rest
of the band, who were off on the road for big chunks of time.

In the event of duplicate acetates, some are going to be in better shape than others, which means they all should be reviewed. It's kind of
impossible to think they would not approach her at some point before this is over.

I've never understood why more of an effort wasn't made to obtain the acetates when working on BWPS in 2003. With the scope of the project and Van Dyke involved it seemed like they could've found a way to make it happen. It seems so obvious that it would have been helpful to hear them before writing new lyrics, etc.

Why would they need the acetates then?  They had the principals, and noone would really "know" if the words weren't the same as something 40 years past; and besides they weren't doing Smile 67 it was BWPS.

Well, yes but things like Child may have had lyrics but they don't seem to be on any extant mixes. There are several other bits that are missing lyrics, and an acetate could very well be the key to finding them.

It does seem like they are going out of their way to avoid her. I wonder why? I thought they were turning every stone looking for the missing pieces.

Finding them NOW would seem important; unless someone knows already what is on them
BUt you wondered why they weren't checked in 2003 and that's why I said there was no need

It would be so easy to clarify this question once and for all of whether attempts to buy or use these fabled acetates were made in the past, related to this Smile project or a previous attempt. Why such an answer isn't available is puzzling.

If anyone has the 2 cd Vigotone SMiLE set, listen to the last track on disc 1 - I presume this is an acetate mix of Worms. It sounds unlike any other version, with different vocals and an overall different vibe..
Is this one of the fabled acetates, or is it an "outfake"?

It's a "fake"...or, rather, a cover version of the song done by the group Ant-Bee; no Beach Boys featured and not vintage.

You can hear a recently re-edited version of the track (now incorporating a bit of "Barnyard") by going to the above site.

IIMO, the acetates have been lost or are in terrible shape. This was mentioned what, almost 10 years ago, and not a peep about the since? I think that if there would have been anything new on those, word would have leaked out by now.

You must think that VDP and his ex-wife are complete idiots.

Does anyone keep count of fall-outs and snipes on the SmSm board? Just wondered whether the news of TSS's release has generated more altercations than any other subject to date!!!

Was that too long after TLOS for that album to have made the spike?

Concerning the "Truck Drivin' Man" lyrics. Does anybody know if that Dennis part was mixed down or was it more up front in the vocals in the original version of Cabinessence intended for Smile? Or was that section later buried down behind "Who Ran The Iron Horse" in the middle of the song for inclusion on 20/20? I probably read about this somewhere before Priore LLVS?) but I forgot how the truck drivin' man lyrics were orginally suppose to fit into the song. Maybe it was intended to be mixed down deep! I always thought it was a shame that it was buried on the released version of the song.

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

Speaking of buried in the mix...During the Bicycle Rider chant, there is a vocal line that is ignored on BWPS, all but lost in the GV Box set mono mix, barely there in the SOT stereo mixes, and highlighted but in poor quality on (a certain CD I never heard) H&V pt 1 comp that is labeled Bicycle Rider acetate- I heard it is track 28.... It comes right after the 'Bicycle Rider, Just see what you've done, done," line. It sound like Dennis singing , "On the church of..." or something like that in an ascending melody...I am not certain those are the lyrics for sure. Does anyone know the part I'm talking about, and what the lyrics are? It is a real SMiLE highlight for me...

Yes. Jeff and Brian sing it on live versions (and the Beach Boys did so as well). I must admit, although I'm very familiar with that line, I can't say from memory where one could hear it studio-wise

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

It sounds like it's only , "To the church of" in an ascending melody line from what I've heard, but it's not clear to me. One of those small strokes of color that Brian would use to create the depth in his masterpiece recordings of the 1960's...

I think I know what you mean - He's singing 'What you done to me', I think. Just after 'Just see what you've done' on the main melody, right?
