I half expected there would be an announcement this weekend. Why do the beach boys hate us?

I would never expect a major announcement like this to happen DURING a holiday weekend. Why bury the story by releasing it when a large chunk of the country has turned off its computers and TVs and has gone on vacation, or to barbecues, or to parades and fireworks? I would have expected a "Fourth of July" announcement to happen THIS WEEK -- i.e., once people are back to work, back to checking their emails and the Internet, etc. I still expect the release date and track list to be announced sometime this month, but we'll just have to wait and see.

I've always believed MOC to be an instrumental in the broadest sense - totally happy with the BWPS vocals used as instruments without words - sounds good to me - BW probably didn't get that far with it in 66 if that is what he intended

I Was listening to both my BWPS album and various bootlegs today on a long and tedious bus ride and couldn't help but think of the smile sessions. A few questions/observations  came to mind

Should we expect clear crisp mixes of songs like "you are my sunshine" and barnyard" is it even possible

Anyone else sceptical about Capitol releasing the smile album, this album deserves the proper promotion and distribution. None of us should have trouble finding the 2cd set or the boxset in stores

Off topic

Was also listening to TLOS, "Midnight" and "Good Kind Of Love" are Brian's best song since anything from Love You

I suspect that the double-CD will be relatively easy to find in stores while the box set won't be.  I'd love to be wrong on the latter, but long gone are the days when you could walk into Tower Records on release day and see a stack of a dozen Pet Sounds Sessions box sets.  That's not to say that some specialty retailers like Amoeba or Rasputin's (in California) won't have a few boxes.   I just don't expect to see the box in mass-market retailers such as Best Buy, Barnes & Noble and (what's left of) Borders.

MAD and Good Kind of Love are my favorite songs from TLOS. If Brian's band (or whomever) weren't so obsessed with making the album a 'live friendly' album I think it could have been Brian's best solo album. I dislike how all the songs meld into one another, and the amount of material on the album gets me.

Back to the topic....I would expect a high quality version of 'sunshine' only because the UNsurpassed Masters instrumental version sounds so good. Don't know about barnyard though.

I can't wait for an announcement on track listing and release date.....once a release date is set no doubt Mark Linett will be open to sharing more information with the press on his findings/mixing work. Can't wait!

Dudes, just read on Rolling Stone that on the outtakes Linett and Boyd have found the fatal 'Over & Over....' session, where Mike pops the infamous question to Van Dyke. From what can be heard on the tape, it would appear that whilst saying 'I don't know what they mean, Mike', Parks is beating him with a microphone stand and laughing.

Did not read the subsequent posts - and my heart skipped a beat while reading the beginning of yours. Then I realized my mistake.

Don't know what's worse: Getting excited over the supposed uncovering of an audio recording of a conversation between two people I have never met in my life - or the fact that we're now so desperate for news we're making it up.

Dear Capitol: your entire market base for this product will be in the nut house before the release if you don't give us a small tease soon!!! Grin

It has been announced by no source whatsoever that the deluxe edition is going to come with a birthday cake with the frank holmes artwork in icing, 100 selected cakes will have lengths of the original multitrack tapes baked into them, the reason there has been delayed news regarding the set is because Brian found out and ate most of the cakes, they have to bake new batches before the box can be announced.

Is this the one where he is threatening Brian too and Brian is heard crying and pleading to leave them alone and to put his pants back on?

That's what I understand and also "Do You Like BeerNuts".

Erg, I stepped on bgas' joke. Sorry. It doesn't make sense anyway with oatmeal, so probably just a rumor.

So what else needs to be done on this project? All the archive work is complete I imagine, they said they've been working on it for 10 years. It seemed that the first announcement they made might have been intended to scare up some missing material. The thread a while back about the mystery Polaroid of the tape archive possibly represented the last scraping of the bottom of the barrel for new material. So all the archive work that could be done probably has at this point.

Then we heard Brian say that he "signed off" on the 30 hours or whatever of material. I guess this wasn't the final tracklist but was the total sum of material that had been collected from which the set will be assembled. I think I even read something about Brian rejecting some of this material, I wonder why. That was like a month ago, so from there a tracklist had to be created. Does Brian have to sign off on that as well? Has this stage been reached yet? I would hope they don't dwell on this for too long.

Then the material has to be mixed and mastered, and how long might that take? A week? A month?

Then there's packaging and the book. Has the book already been written? Is it complete and ready to hand off to the publishers? Or is that still being hammered out. There's been no word on whether Frank Holmes has allowed his artwork to be used so I hope squabbling over fees isn't one of the reasons this project is being held up.

At what stage do Mike and Al have to sign off on all this? Have they given their input? Are we going to see this project held up over a few lines in the book?

I'd like to know at what stage the project currently rests, are things still moving along on schedule? what work still needs to be done? If this indeed is coming out in September when does everything need to be finished by for this to ship?

It would be really nice if we could get some new info. I don't mean a tracklist or pictures of the packaging or a release date, just a little comment to let us know that things are moving along as planned and whether we can still expect a summer release.
