Wait, that's a misprint on the cover - shouldn't it be "Shunshine Tomorrow?"

 Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

How astute, old sport.

Such funny thread question - "other than Dennis"? Roll Eyes More like "including Dennis". Let's get real, OK? Dennis was "terrible", to use Amy B.'s word. I was bored by the whole thing in "Two-Lane Blacktop". Dennis surely didn't shine with superb acting skills there. We must be glad that nobody went to star in films. It really annoys me big time to see actors trying to sing & singers/ musicians beginning movie career. Everybody must do what they can - know their place, you know?

& to say "lacked charisma" is stupid. Too bad people care about it like it's super-duper important thing. Bigger deal than the actual acting/ communication/ whichever talent? Roll Eyes
Besides, NO musician - Beatles too - is good in films. It isn't just BBs. For some weeeeeird reason, people downplay BBs with these shoulda/ woulda/ coulda been bad actors when nobody could, in fact.

I think Johnny Cash was quite good in that Columbo episode.

You're welcome!

And here's another paper, in fact a chapter from Philip Lambert's book Good Vibrations (2016):

Yes, that Super Information Highway is something to behold.

I predict that it's going to be great some day.

Hi all -

whilst making my way on the Super Information Highway yesterday, I found some short but thoughtful essays on Brian, the band, and their music.

It may well be that they're already known by all of you seekers, searchers, finders, and keepers.

In that case: my sincerest apologies.

Please note: of course I didn't have the time to study the texts in depth.

At this time, Sunshine Tomorrow is currently sitting at #3 in Best Selling Rock Vinyl & CDs list on Amazon, a truly amazing sight to behold. I'm so ecstatic to see the Beach Boys and Wild Honey earning the wider recognition that they both deserve!

It just gets better every day.

And how I love that cover art - who's responsible for this?

I never was too fond of the band name being done in, what is it? Neon light-y? I mean, like it's done on the Made In California cover - for me it is something, erm, semiotic: it marks the transition from the BBs 'art' into 'commerce', so to speak.
82  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Who other than Dennis would have been good in a film? on: May 25, 2017, 10:41:10 AM
well we can see the Beach Boys very briefly in "Disorderlies" lol but yeah I would say that Brian would make a great comedian, maybe not a serious type actor but more slapstick maybe character based, he kind of reminds me of Bill Murray in some ways (or visa versa), the other members (other than Dennis of course as you said)  seem like they would be actors in infomercials, a little stiff but still likable,,, Bruce and Al would be real mellow just kind of talking and standing there and Mike would dance around while trying to sell hair gel or something...lol..Carl would have made a great mellow talk show host or something or someone on PBS talking about philosophy and the arts, he just came off as the "Intellect" type..But yeah I think really Brian and Dennis had the most energy for acting in movies..

I am trying to imagine Brian in Lost In Translation, opposite Scarlett Johansson.

He in his hotel room, enjoying another glass of Suntory whisky.

Then that escort lady is inside, and shouts at a befuddled Brian: 'Lip My Stockings! Lip My Stockings!!!'.

A nonplussed Brian might be quite scared, and later use this call for a song title.

I think.

83  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys Wild Honey(Sunshine Tomorrow) 2CD Set? on: May 25, 2017, 08:02:25 AM
65 tracks is extraordinary value. Has anyone calculated the total playing time?

No, but you're right.

Which makes me optimistic for a 'Friends', and other follow-ups. It is a fan thing, it is generous, it will sell, the numbers pressed won't be that high, but it won't be a loss leader.

Clearly a labour of love; and also it's not 'strictly academic', so to speak. It has a pleasant and spontaneous feel to me, not 'ramshackle', but simply joyous.

(Over a few years, I began to like the Made In California box more and more (more than I already did); for the same reasons. That one feels very 'free', mono and stereo versions, a bit of a wilfully 'semi-chaotic' track order on the last few disks, it's an great listening experience.)
84  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys Wild Honey(Sunshine Tomorrow) 2CD Set? on: May 24, 2017, 11:13:02 AM
Let's open the Friends, Sunflower, Surf's Up, Carl & The Passions and Holland vaults.

What's with the Sunshine Tomorrow title??

I like it very much.

It's thankfully not academic (The Annotated Survey Of One Of The Beach Boys' Most Intriguing Transitory Phases: The Wild Honey 50th Anniversary Tracks In Stereo And A Plethora Of Hitherto Unreleased Alternate Versions, Live Recordings, And Big Surprises That Even The Most Discerning Fans Haven't Heard Yet - Approved By The Band And Mike Love In Particular!!!')

Where was I? Oh, yes:

It is unexpected, and has something mystical about it: with a bit of insecurity and longing in it - and I always hear that line in my head when I read this title.

Wonderful, as is the artwork.

the Japanese version of a certain BBs album was titled: Stuck O'Trucks.

I've been wondering for 20 mins. now whatever that could mean?

Whoever has an idea, please let me know!)

Hi, Don.

If your local retailer is Dutch, it sounds to me like a case of mistaken pronunciation somewhere down the line. Like "wraps" being mispronounced "frups". Grin

Ah! Cheers JK -

one of those occasions where I think: I should've thought of it...

...now, I hear a German voice in my fantasy, shouting out the infamous English four letter word... he or she actually pronounces that very near to what: 'f-ah-k' sounds like in our ears. So in a sense, the 'a' and 'u' are perhaps easily interchangeable, when one thinks visually.

Stick O'Tricks? Stock O'Trocks? Steck O'Trecks?

I get confused...

Completely unexpected, delightful, superb, and wonderful -

who'd a thunk it?

With my Smiley Smile stereo disk, this is just a fantastic new perspective on the era.

By popular demand, there will no doubt be a Friends counterpart.

(BTW, I just looked at the site of my local retailer. ST isn't up there yet, but I spotted a funny unintended gag:

87  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Should they remix \ on: December 14, 2016, 05:25:55 AM
I would prefer if they remixed it to sound more 60s than a more modern sound. I'm not a fan of that 80s sounds and the sounds that came after. I would love to hear songs like Getcha Back, Male Ego & Kokomo done using analog without that digital sounds. I wish the same would be done for BW88 .

Basically I agree.

IMHO there were quite a few 'antimusical' fashions since the advent of digital, and perhaps these are partly due to the way people listen to music in general.

The whole computerization of everything under the sun hasn't always been fortuitous for real music lovers. All that trickery is not real clothing, it's only dress to impress. Or the new clothes of the Emperor, if you will.

I mean: horrible compression and/or brickwalling - who on earth was waiting for that? It's the reason why I rarely play Springsteen's Magic, even though it is a fine album. Brendan O'Brien wasn't a lucky choice for producer, I think.

-------

Now, on the other hand:

I am hesitant when it comes to make albums sound more 'now', or more 'sixties', after the fact. I consider The Beach Boys a thing of its time - so the production values of 1986 belong to that album. It was thought up way back then, and it's debatable whether re-dressing it in a guise of another era is historically responsible.

But to return to Ricky's idea: if it would be done, I would prefer an older and warmer sound.

yup! and the bonus live tracks as well.
it's actually a better deal, if you already have the 97' box set.

Thanks! As all of us know, each new serious BBs re-release is soooooo tempting - but on the other and, I still can't print my own money, despite all fine technology in 2016.

Moreover, I happen to have the CATP mix on vinyl, and that is a joy to listen to.

I think I know what I'll wil do...

Oh, before I forget: cheers to everyone who replied to my opening post!

Dear friends and fans -

I happen to have the 1997 boxed set (who here doesn't?) and am contemplating buying the 2016 set. Now, I need some advice, taking into account that:

(1) I am not particularly interested in live versions of numerous PS tracks;

(2) the Blu-Ray disk is not a decisive purchasing argument for me;

(3) so I am left with points like pure sound issues, and questions like: does the newer box have unique and hitherto unreleased session tracks and suchlike, to ponder before making my decision?

Thanks in advance, Lt. Columbo The Heartical Don.

I guess it does sound to me like you guys are minimizing the crime. Adam mentioned Jeffrey Dahmer. Try adjusting this story just enough in your imagination that the crime was one that really horrifies you and would your reaction be the same?
Maybe it would, in which case you are more philosophical than I and there we are. But maybe it wouldn't. And maybe the impact of the crime itself is not as much to you as it may be to others.
On the other hand, maybe I'm projecting on to you my exasperation with the constant minimizing of rape. I don't know.

Thanks for your comment, Emily, much appreciated -

I think all of us think alike when it comes down to the seriousness of Scott's actions. In my opinion, 'minimizing the crime' is: somehow belittling the impact it has on the victim. I don't assume that any SSnet member is doing precisely this.

In extreme fashion, belittling would amount to the unforgiveable (silent) advice to the woman: get over it, or something like that. No one in their right mind thinks like this.

As I said: my interest is with Scott's state of mind. He may have been overcome with serious impulsivity, which can temporarily but totally obliterate one's feelings and calm considerations. In fact for the moment I guess it's the only viable explanation. Which doesn't take one iota away from the pain of the victim.

That's why I said: a situation with only losers. Somehow I feel that Scott's there in his cell now, suffering from deep guilt and regret.
94  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Extraordinarily disappointing news regarding Scott Bennett on: May 08, 2016, 05:37:11 AM
What I see, looking back and trying to read between the lines, is what I saw the first time: a much older man and younger woman, he in a famous touring band: socially, there's an imbalance that he should have been cautious not to exploit (obviously he wasn't). She was impaired enough that she wasn't fully ambulatory and that she didn't remember anything. He was unimpaired enough that he remembered things and that he got her to his room and out again. He raped her on camera in the hall. Later, he left her passed out in the hall.
Unless the article is actually incorrect, those are the facts.
What's the mitigation here?

Hi Emily -

I don't think that anyone here has been trying to make it all seem less tragic than it actually was, or exculpate Scott Bennett as to having done something bad. That wasn't my point, nor that of others (I think). I wanted to emphasize that with what we do know, we actually know not that much. Well, I am speaking for myself: I don't have the slightest idea about what was going through Scott's mind, save (probably) for my strong belief that he, IMHO an intelligent, sensitive man, can't possibly have been in his normal state of being when he did what he did, given the enormous risks that would have been so obvious to any clear-headed person in those surroundings (well, risks... I'd even go so far as to say that someone in a normal state would know that he'd have a 100% chance of being found out, given today's video observation techniques).

That is what puzzles me the most, in fact. That is why I used words like lapsus, he may have been aware regarding the events, and hence have a recollection of these, but at the same time he may not have had any capacity for sound judgment.

Perhaps one or another psychological assessment will be made, and perhaps even made public.
95  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Extraordinarily disappointing news regarding Scott Bennett on: May 08, 2016, 04:31:23 AM
@ Adamghost -

thank you for writing. Obviously, we started from different vantage points (Me, I went by the story so far, since it is all we have to go by - you took the story itself and examined it critically.)

But somehow, esp. re: what you wrote in your conclusion, we arrived at similarities in our thinking about it. And that in itself is good, IMHO.
96  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Extraordinarily disappointing news regarding Scott Bennett on: May 08, 2016, 02:58:21 AM
It is a tragedy.

Personally I don't feel any inclination to portray Scott Bennett as a 'monster' now. Or state something like: we never really knew him, did we? These expressions don't really represent my own view on human beings.

Yes, Scott fell from grace here. He transgressed. Many, if not all people are vulnerable in moral things, one way or another. Everyone can suffer a mental lapsus, experience some kind of situation where various bad things work against one.

And Scott has been sentenced.

For me, there is no reason to depict him as a terrible (habitual?) criminal, nor to get too involved in issues like: did he do this before?

And yes, I do seriously commiserate with the young lady who is the victim. Hearing what had truly happened must have been the shock of a lifetime. But I see hope for her: apparently she has no recollection whatsoever of the event itself. That offers a perspective for her future, since, from what I know, there is very little chance that she will have retained traumatic memories (in the form of, say, 'film clips' in her mind, or recollections of bodily sensations, feelings of total helplessness) - so I hope that there will be no post-traumatic stress disorder for her. Yes, she does have the a posteriori accounts of it all - but these thankfully usually get processed in a more rational way.

(Sorry if all this sounds very rational, but I really want to take a bit of distance on this issue.)

Taking things together: I used the word 'tragedy', I think that is an apt description of a situation like this. Apparently much alcohol was involved, so it's even harder to make out what was on Scott's mind than it would have been, had he been sober. I have the impression that he acted out of character, and did not really play out something he had precisely planned beforehand (I mean: he would certainly have been aware of the enormous risks he would be taking, in that particular environment, no?).

It's one of those occasions where there are only losers, I think.

Do you know if that 1990s interview is available anywhere on the Web?

Found this quote from a 1995 interview in Vox Magazine:

http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,2716.msg51339.html#msg51339

I've seen that issue of Vox on eBay...

IIRC I have that issue. If it has the remarkable photos of Brian that I can not seem to locate anywhere... the pics are surreas, as if Bri is looking into a laughing mirror. There are a few photos of him that I find especially appealing, BTW, it's the Guy Webster one in b/w, with a very well-dressed Brian looking into the lens with a sombre face. Very stately. There are the ones from Vox, I think the photographer had a Belgian name, it will pop up in my mind some day today. And there is the Matthew Rolston one, again in b/w, in a Rolling Stone anniversay edition with portfolios of a number of rock photographers. Again, the Rolston is hard to locate, otherwise I would put it up here; to be honest, it portrays Brian as being fearful (I put it mildly), as if he is facing his personal demons precisely at the time Rolston took he photo. These are the standout pics for me.

(The finest Dennis photos BTW are the one that adorn the POB gatefold LP sleeve - they capture the mood of the music so well. IIRC that was Guy Webster again as the lensman.)

If you ever find those pics you're talking about I'd love to see them posted here... http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,23506.0.html

Ah, nice! I surely will. That I do have that Vox issue is certain; thing is: my mag collection is stored away at the moment after I relocated. But it won't be long. And I must still have the RS with the Rolston pic too, albeit that friends helped to store away a lot of material that was lying around in my then apartment. Will look out for the stuff, scan, and send in within the upcoming month, I hope.
