Forget the name but the film that Brian saw in the 60's where someone said "good morning Mr. Wilson" and he apparently thought they were talking about him.
I think that was Seconds. It seems like there was more to the story that was really strange, but I can't remember what it was. It was John Frankenheimer's Seconds. It is a terrific movie, by the way, strongly recommended to all lovers of good films, not only BW fans. The story was that Brian had an idea (don't know if it was caused by drug use) that Phil Spector was watching him, keeping track of him, speaking to him personally, with that line in the motion picture, sort of a paranoid moment if you will. Thing is: the movie is about the personal 'rejuvenation' of the lead in the movie, played by Rock Hudson. And people like me, who like to (over)interpret, find that what happens to Hudson is not totally unlike Brian's first major 'healing' by Eugene Landy. But you may decide for yourself. Movie review: http://filmschoolrejects.com/features/seconds-john-frankenheimers-forgotten-60s-masterpiece.phpThe full movie is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zU28jXfTJzc (very poor quality, enough for a taster anyway, dim the lights etc.).

They were.
The idea that the BBs were/are 'conservative' is a construct that has been created by journalists and others active in the media. It did not help that especially Mike Love led the various incarnations of the band in affiliations with right-wing public persons. I think it was writer Dave Marsh who took the idea of their purported conservatism quite far, he coined the term 'supply side rock' for the BBs in the late '80s. Marsh missed the point, and he was quite far off the mark too.
Oh, I don't find prog rock really innovative, and I think 'prog' is meant to express just that. I don't dislike prog, I actually have a soft spot for Yes - and I can even hear some Yes in the later work of the Flaming Lips.
But I don't think 'innovative' in pop equals technical proficiency, very long compositions, vague fantasy lyrics, and long drum, guitar, and keyboard solos.
Let's define 'innovative' this way: an artists starts with the standard format of the song, as it has been throughout the ages. Some 3 minutes seems to fit the human psyche very well. The chorus-verse-bridge idea too. Nice and not difficult to memorize, should you want to do that. The 20th century brought great leaps forward in terms of studio technology and recording techniques.
In steps Brian Wilson. And the world would never be the same any more.
(I am very sorry but I have to stop here. I just noticed that it is later than I thought. Will try write a bit more; unless others express what I want to add in the interim.)

So the Baha Men's 'Who Let the Dogs Out' was really a song about The Beach Boys? Who knew? Otherwise...we're really scrapin' for stuff to talk about here.
How 'bout those Broncos? Nicer weather this weekend? Howz yer better half? Ready ANY good books lately? [not at THIS site....but I haven't commented as I don't want to spoil it for the baker's dozen, or so, who give a rat's ass]
...b...b...but - I think I am on a roll, sir... was just planning to add: 'Heads You Win, Tails I Lose' by the Chihuahua Combo... I think that amounts to literature...

All they would have left us with is the ending segment of 'Caroline, No'. And all The Beatles would have left us with after that is the ending segment of "Good Morning Good Morning". Yup. And a new and highly adventurous road in popular music definitely would have been opened. Alas, history decided differently, and now we're stuck with Kenny G. forever.

Easy.
All they would have left us with is the ending segment of 'Caroline, No'.
We would have been salivating over the 5CD box of The Louie And Banana Sessions, and countless cover versions by other canine groups, like the 5 Labradors, the Jack Russell Rousers, and the Poodle Pups.
And there would have been that mythical Lassie Project, unfinished but reconstructed a gazillion times by true aficionados.
And we'd all have been trainspotters gone totally bonkers, with an frighteningly detailed knowledge of the sounds of locomotives in action.
My two cents. I'll get me coat then.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Was musical memory the secret to Brian Wilson's genius?
|

Thank you for the interesting link, 8o8o -
I read the Guardian article with pleasure.
I don't have much time now, but will return to the matter shortly. For now, I do think indeed that an extraordinary ability to memorize and recall music makes Brian what he is. I was just reading some scientific material about a phenomenon we all possess: inhibition. It's in our brain, and it is necessary to suppress memories, thoughts, that may be useless or even harmful to ourselves. The most commonly known example of 'disinhibition', i.e. an affliction where inhibition itself doesn't function well enough, would be Tourette's Disorder. Patients can utter quite vulgar language in the midst of a well-constructed sentence, without wanting to do so. I think all of us do have impulses to utter inappropriate words and expressions every now and then, but we can unconsciously or consciously suppress this from happening.
What does this have to do with Brian, you ask?
Now, there are people who do have something vaguely similar. With music. Suppose the 'Brians' of this world (I am thinking of Beethoven) memorize all kinds of fragments of music - those heard in the outside world, as a baby and as a grown-up, those that they constructed themselves in reality, those that they thought of but not put to paper, and those that they 'heard' in dreams. A fantastic mix, huge, and unique to the person. They have an uncommon ability to keep all of it in their mental containers, where 'normals' tend to forget a lot of this over time (i.e. somehow most of it becomes irretrievable). And perhaps there is this disinhibition: on a frequent basis, new combinations, odd reconfigurations, pieces of genius make their way into the composer's consciousness, he or she can perhaps 'feel something coming up', especially under favourable circumstances, or to make circumstances favourable (we all know that Brian's dad could get into a much better mood when Brian and the guys came up with good new music). Ultimately, it is up to the more conscious parts of the genius' brain to select the best parts that come up, because in my little theory also lesser stuff will rear its head from time to time.
Please folks, take these few thoughts as they are meant to be taken: a couple of meandering first ideas that came up in my own gray cells.

Please don't change your avatar... We need Columbo's sleuthing skills... Welcome back! Wow... kissie kissie with la fille! You have been missed! Hope you feel better! Well, I missed you and the other BBs/BW aficionados too! Tks again, FdP! Don, I feel so bad. The Ardbeg is all finished. But there is still some Tobermory, some Laphroig, maybe some Dalwhinnie… stop by any time! I will, John, I will! Postponing something delightful does not mean skipping it altogether! (a clumsy translation of a traditional Dutch saying) Cheers man, from The Don!

I have a major personal beef with their front man Urie, but I will concede that he is quite talented and definitely influenced by The Beach Boys.
Sounds juicy....care to elaborate? - did he steal your parking spot? or your girl? Not something I'm going to elaborate on here. Suffice it to say, though, that I will not be throwing any money their way for the foreseeable future. He stole your ML-signed bandana I claim my $ 1.00

Welkom terug! You and Wee Helper (John M) are the posters I remember best from the time when I discovered this forum. I even remember your slogan of those days: "A man, a plan, a canal... Suez!" Ah, that is so sweet, a great big hug from me! And also cheers from the heart to SMiLE Brian. It is a lovely surprise to be welcomed back this way... Thanks folks.
