I thought it strange to see Brian playing a buncha hits without Mike, Bruce, Alan & David the other day. Just sayin'.

Not so weird. They're his songs.

Sarcasm not your strong suit, huh ?  Smiley

I read so much ridiculous crap on this board that I've started to take everyone literally.

Dude...your hatred of the man is frightening, to be honest. Frightening in the "you belong in a padded room" sense.

This guy is a moderator? Seriously?

Love the drums on the BB's KTSA, by the way. And Randy Bachmann's explanation makes the "ice cream weather" line a bit more forgiveable. The "bow, bow, bows" and "sum-sum-sums" get a bit annoying, but I still like the track way better than anything on '85.

Randy Bachman's band Union did a version of it, it's a little "harder" but more lifeless. and it sounds even more like Takin' Care of Business.

Tracked in down in a couple of places online a few months ago. Agree with Aegir's assessment.

Can't find it on Spotify. Link?

And can't forget Puffy!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQPcXzvq7Rs (first single, sounding a LOT like ELO)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRVShbxb87Q (play count the power pop references)

OK...that's all...for now...I promise.

Lesser known but great stuff

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aymSfT7bz8w (one of the few cds someone ever sent me unrequested that I actually liked!)

Two of the best powerpop albums ever, and by lesser known bands:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2p85Xt3QcI (not the best song on the album, by far, but all I could find on youtube)

And THE ALBUM YOU MUST HEAR IF YOU HAVEN'T:

Plimsouls and Tommy Keene....

Crap, forgot the Plimsouls and Tommy Keene.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_1fyj2CoFU (loved this EP)

ABD has got many of my faves on his list. A lot of power pop is just too sticky sweet for me; the best power pop, pops but also rocks. Try these (many of which I'm sure you've heard):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voKihZAN4ng (from verse to catchiest chorus in the shortest time!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xoke1wUwEXY (none better)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7aoWX8ENT0 (a little bit edgier and better live)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TUepa0yfyw (how was this not a massive hit?)

www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlzzCSVCqOc (fantastic single)

www.youtube.com/watch?v=YH5Arbm47IQ (80s power pop)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsPKKuQmJJQ (I'll take this over September Gurls)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WTjBdRtM2U (tough call between this and their cover of Katrina's song)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ov_ByEAACok (really fun debut album)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsP4PGWqaZM (battle of the retro clothes with the next band)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgdgptaBma8 (one freakishly talented, if insanely derivative, band)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRlBOUs6PkU (old friends, but Noel loves 'em too)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eERZYhox110 (only discovered these guys fairly recently; really should have been huge...I mean Rod Stewart was!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffRTp1YTa0s (their ignored third album had a couple of great power pop songs)

I'll probably post more since you just took up a good chunk of my Friday night!

As albums, they're both pretty dreadful, but at least KTSA has highlights. KTSA (song) rocks and Goin' On is one of the best of the decade for them. Even Endless Harmony has its moments. I really don't like anything about '85, the songs, the production, the performances. There are no highlights and there's a good chance I will never listen to any of it again.
13  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Official thread for Brian & Al's Official Response to Mike/Bruce Band Tour in the LA Times on: October 10, 2012, 12:50:31 PM
Just another episode in the life of our favorite dysfunfunfunctional family!

Seriously, one of the reasons this band is so messed up is because they add family dynamics (and radically differing and stubborn personalities) to the usual group dynamics. Is any of us really surprised by all this?

Wow, didn't realize the show was last weekend. They must have been selling tix mid-reunion tour.

Besides the Benefit show and the New Year's Eve show, which shows were booked during the Reunion Tour?

Anything that's already been announced - the tour only finished two weeks ago! And isn't there one on the cards for 2013?

Besides, even if they only booked one show it would still be the asshole move.
You are right, but there were shows booked prior to announcing the Reunion Tour, as well.

They had no compulsion about cancelling some shows with a symphony because of the reunion. So what?

If that piece is to be believed, Mike turned down more shows. Big shows. New Years Eve shows. Massive events. And for what?

Probably a county fair.

It took over two decades to get Brian Wilson back in the Beach Boys, something I think we have all been waiting for. It took Mike "I can't fire Brian Wilson" Love one press release to get him out. Way to go Mikey!
18  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Official thread for Brian & Al's Official Response to Mike/Bruce Band Tour in the LA Times on: October 09, 2012, 08:35:14 AM
Look, Mike has been proving for five decades now that he's a prick. All the attempted revisionism by Mike, his publicist and members here can't change that. Mike's actions always speak louder than his words.

Some musician friends of my in Austin are engaged in a hilarious Facebook thread right now because one of them bought tickets for the "Beach Boys" expecting more than just two. After he found out he was getting John Stamos and not Brian Wilson, he tried to get rid of his tickets at half face value. No takers.

I wrote a few weeks back.

However I'm willing to bet some time in October we will have a story in a local paper about some dumb@ss who thought he was seeing the celebration Beach Boys rather than the BB Lite version. You just know its going to happen! Thud

Ok its facebook rather than the local paper but it seems we have a winner! LOL

Wait, because people have lives and they don't obsess about who is touring as the Beach Boys this week they are dumbasses? One of the many reasons the reunion tour did so well is the amount of press it received. It hardly takes a dumbass to assume the Beach Boys might actually be the Beach Boys.

Perfect example of why Mike needed to put that release out. Remarkable "...he found out" about John Stamos, but not about Brian, Al and Dave.

You beat me to it, Rocker! Smiley

Nothing at all remarkable about finding out at the same time he was getting Stamos and not Brian, which is what the original statement says.
22  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Denny's Drums on: October 07, 2012, 09:48:39 AM
Could someone point me to a list of songs that Dennis played on in the studio. I was surprised recently to see discussion (probably here) of how many songs he actually played on. Is it maybe Andrew G's website that has all of this?

24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Good Timin' ? :/ on: July 26, 2012, 04:33:20 PM
Finally found it:

Carl Wilson: (talking about 15 Big Ones to Timothy White)
You know, Brian and I wrote one song for this new album called Good Timing. It's got a lot of counterpoint to it, lyrics overlapping.
You need good timing
Lay down your worries
It takes good timing
Lay down your troubles

If your take those words and sing them where Brian sings his answer vocals in the concert versions of Good Timin', it fits perfectly.

The vocal line and the lyrics would have greatly improved an already very good recording.
25  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Somewhat painful Bruce Johnston interview in a Dutch magazine on: July 26, 2012, 04:26:40 PM
I think all we've learned here is that Bruce is a living/breathing human....

Wrong Erik! We are here discussing Godz! OK, maybe not Bruce; he's more of a disciple. But, really the whole BB's saga is a bit like Greek and Roman mythology.
