That was Lars, right? That was sad and unexpected news earlier this year.
Thanks for letting us know about the auction. I hope his collection will find new warm homes at fellow collectors.

Hope all enjoyed. What was the TLOS outtake ?

I don't have an official titel. But based on the fragment we heard, something like "Holding On, Ever Strong" (or just the first 2 or last 2 words)

Personal review Dutch Beach Boys Baambrugge Convention 2024 (BBC2), October 19, 2024

So, a week has passed. And I’m on my feet again, after a beautiful Saturday in Baambrugge. Sunday I could let it all sink in and then another busy work week started. With a new weekend and a short vacation ahead of us, I now take the opportunity to look back on last Saturday's fan meeting.
Actually, the days, no, weeks before were increasingly focused on arranging and preparing everything. With about 30 guests expecting a nice afternoon and evening, I had set the bar high to make it something special. For the most part, everything was nicely on schedule. For the surprise video though - which was not on the official program - not at all 😊. But I had expected that.
For me, the meeting started a day earlier. I had the honor of receiving some of our foreign guests. Gérard, who had come over from France especially for this meeting, I was able to greet at home for a pleasant afternoon. In the evening I could welcome Gene and his daughter Lilly from Germany. I was a special guest there during the German fan meeting last September – now I could return the favor. And – not to forget: we also had fans over from Denmark (Rasmus) and Switzerland (Marco). You can safely say that we had an international meeting. Which required some extra effort from me to make myself understood in English and German (I really couldn't speak French and Danish).
Saturday started out pleasantly drizzly. But miraculously it cleared up around noon. I was present early in to set everything up in the community hall De Vijf Bogen. Chairs, tables, the sales/exchange corner, music corner for the performances. And of course the digital heart of this day: laptop, projector, screen, audio equipment. It will not surprise you, but everything worked like a charm (at that time 😊). Around 13:45 we moved over to Café De Punt, where everyone gathered for the first official part of the program. After a cup of coffee, tea, soft drink or something stronger – and of course after soaking up the atmosphere of this beautiful café (I think the interior has hardly changed after all these years) – we walked towards ‘The Barn’ around 14:15, a few hundred meters further on. In other words, the farm behind which is the site where the BBC2 studio used to be. No, nothing here reminds of what the interior used to look like. But thanks to photos from back then and eyewitness accounts and sketches, I was able to give those present a good idea of what it used to look like.
Around 14:45 this tour ended, and we moved to the community hall. Here everyone had the chance to get acquainted, sometimes with friends we last saw decades ago. But a surprising number of fans preferred the many boxes of sales and exchange material to browse through in advance. And of course everyone was handed the obligatory button and programme booklet at the entrance. Around 15:30 the first documentary was on the program. And then the technology turned out to be a bit more stubborn at the moment suprême and the audio let us down. With help of Marnix we got an alternative connection working (thanks for that!). A documentary about The Making of Western Justice. A fascinating insight into the life and work of Jack Rieley, only shortly after his departure as manager of The Beach Boys.
Then it was time for the sing-along. Beforehand the part where I had the most difficulty estimating how we would do. Because even though we had practiced in advance – we had not yet practiced together. But that worry turned out to be unfounded. In fact – it went beyond expectations. With Gjalt and Marnix as a fixed anchor for the “1972-era” numbers we were able to put down a solid set. With true multi-part harmonies by Hans and me, and surprising newcomer Frank! But there was certainly also room for the classical work of the gentlemen. With which we started and ended. And Hans and Jelle took us along, again supported by Gjalt and Marnix, but also the surprising 2nd pianist John. What a wonderful setlist we all put together:
1. Help Me Rhonda,
2. California Girls
3. You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone
4. Marcella
5. Sail On Sailor
6. Funky Pretty
7. Sloop John B. (with Dutch lyrics)
8. Steamboat
9. Don’t Worry Baby
10. Farmer’s Daughter
(correct me regarding the order of the last songs, if I am wrong; I was already working on the next part)
It was almost not fun to ask our musicians to stop the music. Because we were allowed to welcome a new guest; director Monique Lesterhuis. 20 years ago she made a beautiful documentary about The Beach Boys in the Netherlands. But “Made in Holland” did not make it to an official broadcast, simply because another documentary by Andere Tijden was already in the making. 20 years later, the fans finally got the chance to see it. A real treat. With interviews with Blondie Chaplin, Ricky Fataar and Van Dyke Parks. But also insiders from the Netherlands, such as Don Willard and Mrs. Gentenaar (owner of the farm).
Afterwards we had the opportunity to order a simple meal; a snack at the bar or order from the local pizzeria. We also immediately seized the opportunity to take a group photo. And then again to browse through the bins for that one item that was still missing from the collection.
And during this intermezzo it was also time for the surprise video. The project “video greet” appeared on the screen. The audience was treated to messages from Scott Totten, David Beard (ESQ), Stephen Kalinich, Val Johnson-Howe (BBB), Karlheinz Regenberg (BBFC & California Saga), Probyn Gregory (who also spoke in Dutch – respect!), Scott Bennett (with an extra surprise, letting us hear an early outtake from the TLOS sessions)… and finally Spud and T-Bird Tim from Drifting Sand…. and Al Jardine himself (with a wonderfully sung alternative intro of California Saga - California! As an encore we also had an interview with David Leaf. A conversation that I hope to be able to share later in this FB group.
After we had recovered from that, the attendees were allowed to charge up for a real knowledge test: the Beach Boys Pub Quiz. In 6 rounds - including a picture round, a music round and a Holland theme round - the teams struggled through the questions. And those were quite tough sometimes. Where halfway through a clear victory seemed to be looming for a true BB-veterans team among us, it turned out that the music round in particular (only instrumental intros) was a real killer and it became very exciting at the end. But Gjalt and Gabriël managed to crown themselves the winners by a narrow margin. With Willem and Jo-Anne as very honorable runners-up.
And with that we closed the evening and the attendees could return home more than satisfied.

Finally - the lessons learned:
- Don't rely on wireless and bluetooth (always bring cables) 😊
- Next time I will expand the organizing committee with 2 people. That makes the preparation and the day itself a lot quieter for me (because I myself had little time to sit back and chat.
But... I enjoyed it very much !

Be sure to check out the FB group ‘Beach Boys Nederland’ (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1694121897475942/), where you can find more pictures and videos.

Dutch Beach Boys Convention, October 19th 2024 in Baambrugge
Official announcement – registration is now possible!

We have organized a convention for fans of The Beach Boys, which takes place on Saturday, October 19th 2024.

Location and time:
Start: 14:00; end: 22:00 (at the latest)

We will gather at around 14:00 at Café De Punt (Rijksstraatweg 12, Baambrugge). There is a large parking lot opposite the café. Are you a bit early? No problem. Then you will still have the opportunity to order a cup of coffee or tea at the bar. The atmosphere and interior have hardly changed in the past 50 years. So you can still get a taste of the atmosphere of the time when the Boys themselves went there for a snack between recordings. At 14:15 we will walk to the site of the former BBC2 studio (1 minute walk). We have permission from the owner, who will be happy to speak to us. We have enough information to explain a few things about the location, the studio, etc..

Around 14:45 we will finish and move to the main location of the meeting: Dorpshuis De Vijf Bogen (Prinses Margrietstraat 10, Baambrugge). The rest of the program will start there from 15:00. As yet we will keep it to ourselves partly. But we do have a few unknown/unaired documentaries that we will show. We’ll also have a Beach Boys Pub Quiz. Of course there will be room for music and singing. And not to forget: getting to know each other, meeting (again) and reminiscing.

Registration and costs:
I ask you to officially register in advance and pay the contribution. That way, based on the number of registrations, I (and the folks of village hall) know what I have to take into account.
Participation in the fan meeting costs €15. This is needed for renting the room and showing one of the documentaries. If you want to attend, send me an email at smileholland@gmail.com to register. I will then send you my bank details for payment (within 24 hours).

Food and drinks:
I will make sure that there are snacks on the tables in the hall. You can order drinks yourself at the bar. This also applies to the cup of coffee or tea at the café by the way.
Around 18:00-19:00 your stomachs will probably be growling. You will then have the opportunity to order a simple fried snack at the bar. Or the alternative: order a pizza. I am still in contact with the owner of the nearby pizzeria about how we can arrange this most easily. The snack/pizza is also at your own expense.

Sale/swap tables:
Do you have Beach Boys (or related) merchandise, and would you like to sell or swap? Then you can. I do ask you to let me know when you register. Then I can reserve a table for you.

Travel:
- Car: I suspect that most of you will just follow the navigation. But for those who are less experienced with that: Baambrugge is located near highway A2 (Amsterdam – Utrecht). If you are coming from Amsterdam, take exit 3 Abcoude. Then drive into Abcoude and from there follow the signs to Baambrugge. If you are coming from Utrecht, take exit 4 Vinkeveen. From there, follow the signs Hilversum N201, and then (first exit on the left) Loenersloot and Baambrugge. There is ample parking at both Café De Punt and the Dorpshuis.

- Public transport. Baambrugge can be reached by bus. Line 120 runs between ‘Utrecht CS (Jaarbeurs side)’ and ‘Amsterdam station Bijlmer ArenA’. The bus runs on Saturday during the day (2x per hour) and in the evening (from approx. 20:00 hrs 1x per hour). The last bus from Baambrugge to Amsterdam leaves at 23:28 hrs. Please note: from Utrecht it takes an hour by bus! From Amsterdam-Bijlmer it only takes 20 minutes. Get on/off at the ‘Baambrugge – Dorp’ stop. Towards the café it is only a 200 meter walk. Towards the village hall approx. 400 meters.

Overnight stay:
Please keep in mind that it is quite difficult to find a cheap (hotel) room in the immediate vicinity. If you need help searching a place to stay, let me know. We might know a place a bit further away, but with the possibility to travel with another fan. Or perhaps we can arrange something with fellow fans for an overnight stay.

I hope to see you on October 19!

Just a short update right before my holidays...

... to let you know that of course the Dutch meeting is still planned on October 19th 2024. So keep that date reserved in your agenda! I'm still busy finishing with the program, but it's all looking very well (it's mostly the sequencing). I expect to do the official announcement and possibility to registrate in the second half of August.

So, to be continued. And for now I wish you all a fantastic Summer holiday.

I can now officially announce that we'll have a Dutch fan meeting on October 19th 2024 in Baambrugge. And of course the doors are open as well for foreign guests! More info will follow shortly. Smiley

Possible fan meeting in Baambrugge, The Netherlands, October 19, 2024

We are currently exploring whether we can organize a Dutch fan meeting this fall. The location will most probably be Baambrugge (where else?), possibly in the local village hall. However, the number of available data is limited. The only possibility is Saturday October 19th 2024 (a week earlier the Stomp Convention is planned).

We are currently making an inventory of how many Dutch fans can be present. We want to keep the costs for hall rental as low as possible. The starting point is a minimum number of 20 fans and we aim for an entrance fee of €10 (excluding refreshments – there is a bar).

Of course foreign fans are also welcome. That's why I'm also checking this message board to see if there are any fans who would like to make the trip to the Netherlands and have a nice afternoon and evening with us. We can imagine this might difficult if you have to come from far away. But suppose you are planning to go to the UK Stomp on the 12th... how nice would it be it to extend your trip/holiday by a week and make a small detour through Baambrugge before you go home?

We don't have a set program yet. For the small fan base here it is difficult to arrange special guests. But it is guaranteed to be a lot of fun. And we already have several ideas to fill the afternoon and evening. Think of documentaries that we can show, a quiz, and/or sing-a-long. There is room for exchange or sale of BB music or memorabilia. Of course we will try to arrange a visit to the site of the former BBC2 studio. And in between there is lots of opportunities to catch up with friends and fans.

So are you interested? Let me know (a response in this topic, or through PM). And do you have questions because you are dependent on public transport or want to know what is convenient in terms of overnight accommodation? I will think with you about the possibilities.

Greetings,
Klaas

Sounds good to me - combining these two beach boys events in the fall: the JUBILEE STOMP convention (west of London) and a fanmeeting (in Southern Amsterdam)!
And for us NON-flyers there's now a direct Euroline train service between London and Amsterdam!

Hey, rasmus! Thanks for you enthusiastic promotion of both events. I’m sure the STOMP convention will be a blast! If we can make the Baambrugge-meeting definite, I’ll make it known here. And I hope to welcome you then of course  Smiley

Great!! Thank you for linking this!

So it's Carl playing one of my favorite bass lines in a Beach Boys song (Here She comes). I didn't expect that.

Funny little tidbit: last year I interviewed a Dutch guy who made friends with Ricky Fataar in the Summer of 1972. Because of that he frequently visited the BBC2 studio and also got to meet an talk with other Beach Boys. And Carl actuallly told him that he played bass on Here She Comes, which was a surprise for me as well. Nice to see that after a lot of research Will, Craig, Joshilyn and John drew the same conclusion.

And I agree with you, that's one cool bass line he's playing.

Two shots of Blondie, Ricky and Bruce being part of the band

It should be mentioned though that Ricky and Blondie weren’t official members of the band yet. That would happen a few days later when they held a press conference in London, where they announced them as new members of the group.

This picture is from the first rehearsal for the Grand Gala Du Disque in the RAI congress building in Amsterdam, The Netherlands on February 23rd 1972. The group, minus Al and Mike, were present. Al & Mike were rounding up their TM-training in Mallorca, and would join them the next day. Also visible is Billy behind the piano. And a guy from South America called Eddie doing percussion (that’s what is mentioned about him in a Dutch fanzine from that era, no further info on him unfortunately).

One of my favorites of the SOS box is the track/backing vocals for The Trader. Is it just me, or is Bruce on this track? Knowing he left before the Holland sessions, I wasn't expecting to hear him (or what I think might be him) on this song. Do we have a definitive list of the song(s) he was involved in for '72?  I thought I heard him one other track on the SOS box set but am drawing a blank on which it was. Good excuse to listen again  Smiley

It's been known for years that Bruce sings on "California Saga (on my way to sunny ...)" but I never could point his voice out until the track + bg vocals on the new set. He's very prominent on that.

I'd guess he may be on "Marcella" as they played (or lipsynched to) that song on a dutch TV show which included Bruce.

The recording of Marcella was finished in Feb 72 before they came over to The Netherlands to attend the Grand Gala Du Disque (Feb25th) and perform on Dutch pop show TopPop (on Feb 24th). When the lipsynch performance was done the song still was logged under its original title One Arm Over My Shoulder. But when it was broadcasted on Dutch TV on May 2nd the song obviously was announced as Marcella (C&tP-ST) was released by then.

But in short, Bruce was definitely involved on Marcella.

I’m listening right now on Spotify and it freaking says “Make it Good- Aternate Version”… that typo is driving me nuts!!!

Btw…after hearing the alternate Marcella it’s very clear now it’s Carl doing the Marcella Hey part on the tag… which seriously makes me wonder how I ended up with a snippet of Brian singing it in the first place. I had done an extraction mix on a version of Marcella I “acquired” from someone many of us knew (who has since passed)…not a bootleg, a copy of So Tough …I think it was a needle drop. Can’t remember as I no longer have my original Facebook account. Could there be a possibility that this could be a We Got Love/Holland situation where there was a mispressing, and somehow the wrong mix slipped under the radar for decades?

If anybody here downloaded it when I posted it all those years ago from RapidShare , please let me know. This was two laptops ago!

PM sent...

To answer the topic brought up above, yes, the Analogue Productions releases (vinyl and CD/SACD hybrid) are legit, licensed releases. I'm not sure what would possibly make anyone think they're not. They were/are sold through legitimate retailers, and have known names that remastered them.

They weren't discussed a ton here, but I think that was just a confluence of a bunch of things (the 2012 reissues being relatively recent at the time, not a super huge interest here in high-rez, and the incomplete nature of both reissue campaigns).

The current mode of running through the catalog and getting the albums back out there in physical form and also presenting a ton of outtakes (e.g. Feel Flows and Sail on Sailor) is ideal, and I certainly hope we continue to see the 70s covered in one form or another.
I bought all of he analogue production masters as high res downloads. They are easily the best editions of those albums. I don’t expect them to be bettered. Absolutely vital purchases.

I think it was also Analogue Productions that handled the 200g vinyl release of Holland that I also own.  That sucker's a pretty thick piece of wax; it could take a bullet and still probably play fine.  🤣

And even better; although mentioned nowhere on either the 2LP vinyl release or the SACD, both contain We Got Love as a bonus cut. (granted, they do mention it on their website).

This version of WGL is a longer edit compared to the original version that only made it on testpressings of the first version of Holland, and a few hundred German pressings (when someone at WEA accidenally accidentally took the wrong master to press a second run of the original pressing (probably March 1973). And this longer edit is the same as the one on the so-called Klay-tapes (Brother 3CD set).

Must say that I laughed out loud when I saw your photo with my old “Friends of The Beach Boys” issues!  Someone must have paid you to take them off their hands! Lol!

There’s nothing wrong with ‘old’ fanzines like yours. I love ‘em. They were part of a trade I did. And I actually already have nr 6 and 7, so if anyone’s interested… I’m still looking for #1&2 myself btw.

Did you know there was another fanzine called ‘Friends’?  Issued by the Dutch fanclub between 1971-74.

Sorry that I couldn't join !
Just a couple of questions:  The "Studio"s nabours; will they still open a Beach Boys-themed Bed & Breakfast.
And the " Holland"book: When is its release scheduled. And will it be in dutch, only?

Ah, the neighbours with ideas on starting a BBBBB&B (Beach Boys BaamBrugge Bed & Breakfast)… no clue. We didn’t speak with them.

The scheduled release is March 2023. The publisher only made a deal for a Dutch publication. But the authors are allowed to find another publisher to publish this book in another language. I personally would welcome it, as I expect that an English release would interestva larger sales market. And the authors agree with that. There’s few vague ideas, but no concrete plans yet. Although a few fans already gave some suggestions.

Here’s a look back on the Dutch Beach Boys meeting of August 14th 2022. My partner-in-crime for this day, Willem, made a reservation at Café De Punt in Baambrugge. That’s the café right across the street where the studio used to be. And where the boys would often go to for drink and a toast in between sessions. Yes, the café’s still there, and honestly, the interior hasn’t changed that much in 50 years… and they still have toasts on the menu. I arrived a bit early, and appropriately ordered a few toasts for lunch. The meeting was officially planned between 2-5PM, but the first fans started pouring in before that. We quickly figured out that the terrace that was reserved for us – although equipped with large parasols – was steaming hot (surrounded with fences and glass windows). So we soon moved to another terrace on the back, along the river, where the temperature was much more bearable.

The first was mostly used for handshakes and reminiscing. And lots of drinks! Many familiar faces, but also a few new ones. Really nice to finally shake hands with jk (active Endless Harmony board). But we even had a guest that came over from Germany (albeit a genuine Australian guy – mooger frooger, well known on the SmileySmile board) who arrived just in time to join during our visit at the ‘barn’.

At around 3PM we went for a short walk to the other side of the street where the current owner of the little business park (that is situated on the site where the studio used to be) was waiting for us. And to our happy surprise he didn’t just open the gate for us, but gave us a grand tour on the premises, and gave us an extensive explanation on the history of the barn, its functions prior to and during the making of Holland, and a more details on the exact location of the former BBC2 studio and a more accurate date on when the building was torn down. Regarding the book on Holland we’re working on, we still have some questions left, but thanks to the owner we now also know where to find the local historian of Baambrugge, so he might be able to tell us even more.

Half an hour later we happily returned to the café’s terrace (did I mention already it was HOT – especially standing and walking on a large piece of concrete!) for more drinks and conversation., and bragging on our individual extraordinary experiences with the Beach Boys (all true stories though). We also took the time to memorate our good friend Maarten, who was supposed to be here as well, but passed away suddenly shotly after he announced he would come over as well (his wife joined us for this occasion). As a former member of the Dutch vocal group Holland Smiles, and a great guys in general, we will surely miss him.

For those interested I even had a few copies of the new Drifting Sand CD-single with Al Jardine guesting on bv’s on ‘Best Summer Ever’, that some of the fans happily bought a copy off. Some of us brought memorabilia, and I was lucky enough to get hold on some older fan magazines (thanks Willem!!). Later on, I opened up the trunk of my car loaded with boxes filled with spare BB vinyl, cd’s and books/magazines, and a few fans happily took advantage of the occasion. And thanks to another fan a few of us were even able to listen to a live stream of the single In Concert album – even Bluetooth-ed through the stereo of my car it sounded great! Many thanks to him for giving us the chance to listen to it!

Afterwards we became aware that we actually hadn’t done trouble enough to spread the word on this meeting, as we heard from several German fans they would have loved to have been there. And tbh, I would have loved to have seen and meet them here (The California Saga fanclub has done some very cool meetings in the past as well. We’ll definitely do our best to promote our next meeting even better. I half expect that there will be another meeting in the near future, if only for the fact that the Holland album’s anniversary is next year and there’s a book to be presented. We’ll have to think of a good location to do this. There’s several possibilities, but if I may believe the owner of the business park, we might as well do it there. But that’s something to figure out later on.

We were sitting on the terrace at the back along the river de Angstel. The site of the former studio is across the street just behind us.

The owner gave us a tour on the site; here we are standing in front of the current building listening to his explanation on the companies that were here 50 years ago and where several buildings/barns were situated.

It sure did happen!

It was a hot day (especially walking on the concrete underground during our tour on the site of the former studio), but we had a blast! I’ll tell more about it soon. Pictures of the event will follow the next couple of days.

A last update and reminder !

As announced before, there's a informal Beach Boys fan meeting in Baambrugge on August 14th (Sunday).

Location: Café De Punt, Rijksstraatweg 12 Baambrugge,
Time: 14:00 - 17:00PM

We don't have an official program, just a few hours of chatting with fans and sharing memories. There's room inside for the group to do so, and in that case we might be able to play some appropriate (and rare) music). But when weather permits, we're sitting outside of course.

No official program...but... we are allowed to visit the former site of the BBC2 studio, just across the street. For those who want to take the opportunity to be there: the gate will be opened for us at 15PM. I'll take some documentation with me, so we can locate and visualize the studio. And perhaps the current owner of the site can tell us a bit more (not on the recordings though).

Any questions? Reply or send me a PM.

A couple of fans are currently busy trying to organize a Beach Boys meeting to celebrate 50 years of Holland. We'd like to hold this meeting in Café De Punt in Baambrugge, just accross the street where the Beach Boys largely recorded their Holland album. Not a big event, mind you, but an opportunity to meet and speak with fans. And if possible (with permission of the current owner of course) possibly a short visit to the former location of the studio.

But we'd like to get an idea of how many fans we can expect (in case we have to reserve part of the cafe).
Big chance of course that it's mostly Dutch fans... but we all speak English and/or German (or something that sounds like it), and we happily invite anyone that has the opportunity and would like to be here to come over and join this happy occasion.

Current possible dates are:
- Saturday August 6th or 13th
- Sunday August 7th of 14th

If you're interested please let me know.
