VERY well said. They'll always be my favorite band but the Beach Boys (including Brian) do not seem interested in doing anything original these days to highlight just how innovative and revolutionary they used to be.
27  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike Love Planning New Vocal Album on: May 28, 2020, 08:19:52 AM
I love the idea in theory, but I have a feeling the vocal tuning would be so prominent that it'd sound that show Glee or Jacob Collier, who is uber-talented but a bit over the top and artificial-sounding.

If they recorded it around one mic and kept it pure and natural, I would be thrilled.

Plus, the concept isn't a very commercial idea in general, so why not keep it as real as possible?

Josh, you should reach out to Philip Lambert who wrote a fantastic music-theory focused book on Brian a few years ago.

Despite all her successes and acclaim, CK seems like a very angry and frustrated person with a huge chip on her shoulder. She seems very resentful and bitter and doesn’t seem to care about inspiring others - especially not younger women.

I feel bad for her because it’s clear she’s facing some emotional turmoil and has been holding on to a lot of anger for a very long time. I just hope she’s enjoying her life and is happy considering her age and health. Her talent has made so many people happy, yet it seems she ignores that and focuses only on the negatives.

The Crosby documentary is THE definitive depiction of the Laurel Canyon scene. Fantastic stuff.

100% on board and think others would be super interested, too.
32  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road (2019 Brent Wilson Documentary) on: August 09, 2019, 05:44:59 PM
Has there been any news on when this documentary will be released?

I chatted with Jean to coordinate an interview with Brian once, and she was super easy to work with and gave me 2 VIP passes for backstage. She must be one of the most patient people on earth with how much she has to take care of as Brian's press person.

Voted for OCA. That is a really interesting website! Thanks for sharing!

I so very badly wish that VDPs would do a re-do of this album. I think all of these songs are friggin great, but man Brian's vocals just aren't the best, and some of the instrumentals (I believe there was digital synth orchestration used on some of the tracks?) are pretty dated. His Live At The Ash Grove album is exactly what I'd want to see with a remake of OCA - and possibly get some guest vocalists who would do justice to the music. Even get Brian back for a song or two. Just a thought.

Nailed it. The worst part of this album is the production. It was dated the day it came out. They are beautiful songs and Brian sounds fantastic.

Their album Sandy from '66 is low-to-no budget Pet Sounds. It's a must-listen for fans of Today-era Beach Boys and Brian productions. Fantastic melodies with beautiful chords and twists and turns.

Here's the tracklist. It's on this "Complete Recordings" set on Spotify, but here's the tracklist
1. Sandy
  2. Hold Me My Baby
  3. Baby Say No
  4. When Stars Shine Bright
  5. Be Good to Your Baby
  6. If I Had My Way
  7. Then the Rains Came
  8. Nanci
  9. Somebody to Love Me
  10. Come Into My Heart
  11. I'll Think of Summer
  12. So in Love
  13. Goodbye Baby
  14. Teenage Years

I wish Bruce would write a book. Besides his time in the Beach Boys, he probably has a fantastic story to tell about his childhood (he was adopted into a super wealthy family) and his early days in the record industry.

There's a huge difference in drinking to wind down after a show and drinking to get plastered and/or to purposely escape yourself like both Dennis and Brian did on far too many occasions.

No meaning behind it. He's just joking around while they test out his vocal through the echo chamber. There's a similar McCartney clip where he's testing out the tape delay for his vocal on "Oh Darling".

I think The Gong was used as the intro swell to Never Learn Not to Love.

Here's what I did to listen to this right now.

Use the HOLA VPN extension for Chrome. Change country to Austrailia.
Sign up for a free Spotify account in the new "Austrailian" window.
Set your country to Australia in your Spotify account settings.
Look up the album in the Spotify web browser player.

Any chance of the '70s Friends remakes making this release? That would be awesome but the new potential track info is already incredible!

I've never heard about this. What's it about?
43  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: 1968 Copyright Extension prediction thread on: November 27, 2018, 07:57:44 AM
Still no info on this and it apparently comes out next month? Jeez.

Eichenberg is so good. I think he's been the best "Brian" theyve ever had. I wonder if he moved to Mike and Bruce to make room for Matt Jardine joining his dad and Brian on the road.
45  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson - 2018 Tour Thread on: November 05, 2018, 03:17:01 PM
It's always interesting when people get upset with Brian. Honestly, he shouldn't really be doing interviews. He obviously dislikes them.

There's an infamous story of when Wayne Coyne from the Flaming Lips filmed an unaired video interview with Brian for HBO's "Reverb" in '99 that was apparently very awkward and uncomfortable. Coyne later trashed him many times in the press afterwards, and also thinks his situation is a "put on".

Here's the text interview:
http://www.stopsmilingonline.com/story_detail.php?id=224

And here's Coyne's thoughts on Brian:

Quote
SS: From your interview with Brian Wilson, the one for HBO ? do you really think that Brian is a genius??

WC: I think genius is weird. It is something that happens. But I don't think people are born that way. I'm not in contempt of him, though. I just hate that if someone is drug-damaged, or eccentric, or possibly mad, people will let them sh*t all over themselves thinking, Isn't he [and out of respect, she] cool?"

Humans should have some sort of behavioral standards at some point in time. I don't care what you do. I don't care if you're the greatest artist. You have to be a good human first! But I don't think that people are geniuses, per se. I think anyone is capable of doing anything that could be considered "genius." I think it's a combination of persistence and some intention, and then some luck and then a little bit more luck, and then just the world being ready for what it is, and then it's considered genius. And it's a lot of accidents and a lot of timing. ...

SS: So do you view Brian more as a "pop guru?" And what about Pet Sounds? I mean, it's a great record, but I think the press has gone way overboard in recent years.

WC: Unfortunately, he's driven by that press -- how he always needs to be in the limelight of things.

SS: He's an American, though, born and raised.

WC: I think he can be a fool, because he needs people to pay attention to him. He's got the Elvis Presley syndrome. He wants everyone to say, "You're great! You're great!" I think he surrounds himself with people who are like, "Brian, the way you eat cereal ? you're a genius. Brian, the way that you wipe your ass, it's genius." I've found it off-putting at times.

But later on, I was like, "Well, if he's such a genius, why can't he talk." He's been asked about his music, like, everyday of his fucking life, so you'd think that he'd have something to say about it, besides, "Well, the Beatles are great." I know they are, Brian. Now, do you remember any of the ideas that you put into your music?

This video is incredible. The Boys In ‘69 recording in Brian’s home studio. It’s obvious they aren’t recording “I can hear music”, so what were they tracking? It’s something that’s uptempo and has a lot of guitar. Also, there’s one shot at 1:19 of Carl singing outside. Has there ever been anything written about if they recorded vocals outdoors at Brian’s?

And we also see Steve Desper a few times too! Could you provide any info, Steve?

This is great. What song were they actually recording here? It's definitely not "I Can Hear Music."
