Jay B. Laws - The Unfinished.

I've said it many times including above, but something big happened to change the dynamic after the band returned from Europe in May 1967.

The currently fashionable term for what occurred in 1967 is "deplatforming." How or why that happened is up for debate (not really) but that's what it was. 

Deplatforming is a term from a few years ago (possibly pre-dating the alt-right being named the alt-right even) & probably out of date by now, meaning removing a platform from fascists, ie stopping them from'debating' at universities / spreading hate speech in public. Doesn't really apply to The Beach Boys becoming unpopular in late 60s America.

I have no doubt that Dennis was a proud father here. But I'll be the jackass and state that this is also the guy who got into domestic disputes with the mother of this child to the point of grabbing her hair and yanking her around,

The Rolling Stone feature you're referencing quotes Shawn as that happening right after she'd punched him in the face.

For the benefit of anyone else reading who doesn't know - In Bloom is?/was the band by Carl B & Just Wilson, Dennis & Carl's sons.

I've seen it referred to before in passing as a grunge band.

The cd's probably long out of print.

Their website's gone & the version in the internet archive was last updated in 2002 (domain expired & got taken over by spammers in 2006/07)  & the webstore selling their album has vanished,

Sure there are a few songs that are forgettable and sound a little too much like Sublime and the Offspring. There is also a tendency on some tracks to go off on a guitar jamm (however, not too excessively). But on the whole, IN BLOOM has taken the harder road of developing their own sound, rather than sound just like what they think WILL sell! And, as a result they've come away with a memorable debut.

I thought there was some talk on here about Dennis being sort of racist taking about beating up a black guy or something like that? Forget what the actual accusations were.

Apparently Dennis used to tell people he'd been raped by a black guy. The details of the story reportedly changed every time he told it, so who knows if any of it was grounded in reality.

Stupid question but is there any source for that other than an uncited footnote in Heroes & Villains (Steven Gaines)?

They did in early in the year at some gigs and on a TV appearance on "Friday's" (great version on that show; much better than the wonky performance from the Spectrum in April), but it was dropped by May or so.

Wow - haven't heard the original album/vinyl version (was Keepin' the Summer Alive ever released anywhere as a single?) only the Knebworth performance,  but Carl's vocals on the first minute or so of TSAS here really rock.

Funny thing about this picture.  It's probably one of the few times in the late 80s where Mike is the LEAST ridiculous looking one in the picture.

In the excellent (primarily Skateboarding) documentary, Dogtown and Zboys, they touch on the Venice surf crowd, which was pretty hostile to non locals. I could see Dennis fitting in down there!!

I remember when I was a young teenager in the '90s, there was a sort of home-made fanzine that I used to get ... I'm sure the old-timers here remember it.

Anyway, I seem to recall seeing a reprint of a handwritten Christmas card that Dennis sent to the fan club ... If my memory is correct, I believe it said something like, "Thank you to all of my fans who took the time to write to me in the Dennymania newsletter", and was dated very close to the end (maybe December 23, 1983?).

Kind of interesting that Dennis was writing Christmas cards/fan letters during this period ... it's always been assumed that Dennis was sort of "out of it" at this time, but this would suggest he might have been a little more together.

Any thoughts or memories? Anyone have a scan of this card?

Mike & Al were the co-organisers caravan where the Python's were meant to be having a drink & last-minute rehearsal.

Carl was with Dennis at the Queen concert. I believe it was in Mike's book. Dennis was drunk and the members of Queen didn't want to meet him. I think it was 75 or 77.

" Roger Taylor from Queen...told me a great story. He was coming off stage at the Forum in L.A after a Queen show in1977 and this homeless-looking guy jumped all over him. Security grabbed him and he realised it's f***in' Dennis. He had the big beard and was probably wearing flip-flops. Just classic Dennis. Roger said they sat around and had a couple of drinks and spoke for 30 - 45 minutes and said he was lovely. He said he was so complimentary of the show and loved Queen and loved their harmonies. He said he was so sweet to him".
