2nd Warner Album

According to AGD's website, the day after Sunflower was released
Sep 1 - session: master for "2nd Warner Brothers LP" prepared. The tracks on the tape (as
noted on the box label) were: Loop De Loop/Susie Cincinnati/San Miguel/H.E.L.P.
(as in "... Is On The Way")/Take A Load Off Your Feet/Carnival/I Just Got My
Pay/Good Time/Big Sur/My Lady (= "Fallin' In Love")/When Girls Get
Together/Lookin' At Tomorrow/How Deep Is The Ocean Surf's Up (= 'Til I Die
minus Brian's lead). Also scrawled on the box is "GRILLO HIPE". [Artisan Sounds ?]
What's the deal with this??

Well, that track listing certainly makes the released

The source of the legendary "Landlocked" boot, and well documented in Brad Elliott's book from 1981. A dub was made of Good Time, I Just Got My Pay, San Miguel, and this version of Til i Die, and these were played duing the Boys' appearance on WPLJ-FM in February '71. When asked by the DJ if the tape was a new album, Carl replied "You could say that some of the cuts might be on an album, but it's not a new album". In an interview with Beach Boys STOMP! years later (that screams to be posted online...hint, hint), Jack Rieley said Loop De Loop, San Miguel, Good Time, and When Girls Get Together were all intended for the second Warners album, but not HELP, Big Sur, or Fallin' In Love.

Been circulating for, oh, 25 years or more. Sounds exactly like the released version minus Brian's lead vocal bits.

From the wiki article: "The album also included "'Til I Die" a song Brian had been working on for well over a year. Though Mike Love was reported at the time to dislike it, he has praised and performed the song in recent years."
Performed? Now THAT is something I'd like to see!

I can hear the song in Mike's nasal voice in my head now, and i have to say it sounds bad.(that's an unfortunate ability I've developed, I can hear most songs in Mike's nasal voice in my head, yet when I try to put them into his softer, All I Wanna Do/ Aren't You Glad voice, I can't)

The touring Beach Boys performance of "'Til I Die" is not only excellent and faithful (Mike doesn't take Brian's part, obviously), but also introduced by Mike in almost reverential manner.
I'm sorry, but this kind of Bloo mentality - "I've not heard it, but if it's Mike it's got to be awful" - just pisses me off. I expect better of this forum (trolls excepted).

It's nothing against Mike, I think some of his leads are great, (for example, his lead on California Girls is absolutely perfect in my opinion), it's just that i don't feel his voice would work for Til' I Die, and I don't know what the voices of the other touring Beach Boys sound like, so I can't really say if their voices would work for it.

1 - Mike's on the original recording. Is his voice nasal there ?
2 - Why the assumption he would take the lead ?
3 - From your own statements, it's obvious you've never seen Mike & Bruce live.

1. no, in my mind, Mike has four different voices
his nasal voice
his pretty All I Wanna Do voice
his bass voice he uses for vocal blends (which is what I assume he uses on Til' I Die)
his Late 80s Kokomo/Summer Of Love voice (the less we say about this one the better, less because of how the voice sounds and more because he sung some of the worst songs of his career in this voice)
on the studio version, he is in the blend. if he were on lead however, i picture it sounding different. in my head, i can hear the "I'm a cork on the ocean" part in his nasal voice, and the "I lost my way, hey hey hey" part in the Kokomo voice, which actually wouldn't sound nearly as bad as Kokomo it does on Kokomo (it should be pretty obvious by now that I don't like Kokomo). it just doesn't work in my mind
2. You kind of answered your own question. I've never seen them live, so I don't know much about their shows. I know Mike doesn't sing lead on everything, but because he is the person i most associate with the touring Beach Boys, he's the one it's easiest for me to picture on lead most of time.
and don't think I'm biased against Mike, I do like a lot of things he did before 15 Big Ones, and it's not like Brian's never recorded any songs that were total pieces of sh*t (smart girls).

The slow (4/4) version of "Big Sur" coulda woulda shoulda been included on the '93 Good Vibrations box set. If "I Just Got My Pay" "Games People Play" and "Help Is On The Way" from that period were included, "Big Sur" should have been included. Who vetoed that sucker? That song should see the light of day some day.
Hell, even "Our Team" was on there!

I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

As a stand-alone song, prefer the 4/4 version, but it would have stuck out like a sore thumb in the Saga. What they did there sounds much more campfire/singalong, fits better.

2. You kind of answered your own question. I've never seen them live, so I don't know much about their shows. I know Mike doesn't sing lead on everything, but because he is the person i most associate with the touring Beach Boys, he's the one it's easiest for me to picture on lead most of time.
and don't think I'm biased against Mike, I do like a lot of things he did before 15 Big Ones, and it's not like Brian's never recorded any songs that were total pieces of merda (smart girls).

Oh come off it. Anyone with a brain knows the touring Boys of recent are great. I never saw their European tour where they played Til I Die but I know the shows would have been good because this band, Mike included, care about putting on a great show. And I'm no Mike apologist and I don't think Andrew is either.
If you hate Mike that much you should find a new band to listen to.

--> Totally agree with that. I've been fortunate to catch Mike and Bruce several times over the past few years (including this Summer), and the band sounds FANTASTIC. They clearly care quite a bit about the music and it shows.
I recommend seeing them whenever you get the chance!

All roads lead to Kokomo. Exhaustive research in time travel has conclusively proven that there is no alternate universe WITHOUT Kokomo. It would've happened regardless.
