Time for me to make my comeback!
Michael and Bruce's version of 'Til I Die is pretty good. I don't know if I prefer it over Brian's live version but they do it pretty well. You have to take them as two different animals; Michael and Bruce's version is done just like on the record, Brian's version is done similarly to the "Desper mix".

I'm the farthest thing from a Mike apologist, and I've never seen Mike and Bruce live, but I have to say I have been seriously impressed with their set lists the last few years, and some of the youtubes I've seen have been top notch. Mike and Bruce's voices have their issues, but they are pushing 70 and the band is singing non-stop for 2 or 3 hours, so it's pretty amazing they do as well as they do. I know Randell Kirsch and John Cowsill slightly from playing around L.A., and they are monster musicians -- in the same league as the Wondermints for sure, and from his posts here Scott Totten clearly has his heart in the right place and has the musical chops to MD.
Part of being critical is giving credit where credit is due...and it looks like the "Beach Boys" have seriously upped their game in the last few years to me, and kudos to Mike for allowing it to happen.

It was on my list - "Big Sur" 1970, that is.
I've gotta see this list, can you shed some light AGD?

Am I the only one who thinks that the released 3/4 version is far superior?
I'll take the unreleased 4/4 over the 3/4 version any day o' the week.
I like both. I think Big Sur '70 fits better as a standalone song - There's a lot of beauty in that track, very similar to the style of "All I Wanna Do". However, Big Sur '72 works better as part of the California Saga than the original ever could've. By the way, how come the Saga gets such a bad rap? It's brilliant! The final song the Beach Boys ever wrote about the Californian lifestyle without sounding like a bunch of cheesy 40 year olds

That's because they were late 20's and 30 year olds.
