after reading some of Heroes and Villains and seeing "An American Family" (accuracy notwithstanding) it made me realize: Were the beach boys doomed from the start? It seems that even when they got started there was too much crap in their personal lives going on and the fact that most of them were family members only exacerbated it.

Check out the Gigs & Sessions section on 10452, which details, where possible, Brian's presence at all shows since 1961 (yes, he was skipping shows as early as 1963). His last show with the band before the 2012 Grammys was September 8th 1996 in Chicago. Prior to that, his presence was increasingly sporadic. Here's a rundown from 1980:
1980 77 61
1981 112 all
1982 142 69
1983 124 44
1984 106 2
1985 97 4
1986 108 2
1987 147 18
1988 144 11
1989 109 7
1990 107 9
1991 116 0
1992 81 0
1993 104 0
1994 69 0
1995 96 4
1996 70 3
Interesting. I assumed Brian was playing more shows with the band in the middle 80's, even though he was not present at any of the concerts I attended 1983-93.
I saw him solo in the 2000's, but in fact last year was the FIRST time I ever saw Brian Wilson play with the band! Makes me realize again what a truly special year 2012 was for The Beach Boys. (As fans we always want more, but really let's be grateful for what we got...C50 2012 was a small miracle.)
1981...what a slog that must have been.
I guess Brian was very reluctant to touring after Dennis died.....as if he needed another reason to not tour.

Did Brian ever hang out with Cheech and/or Chong?

His last show with the band before the 2012 Grammys was September 8th 1996 in Chicago. Prior to that, his presence was increasingly sporadic. Here's a rundown from 1980:
1980 77 61 - 79.2%
1981 112 all - 100%
1982 142 69 - 48.6%
1983 124 44 - 35.5%
1984 106 2 - 1.9%
1985 97 4 - 4.1%
1986 108 2 - 1.6%
1987 147 18 - 12.3%
1988 144 11 - 7.6%
1989 109 7 - 6.4%
1990 107 9 - 8.4%
1991 116 0
1992 81 0
1993 104 0
1994 69 0
1995 96 4 - 4.2%
1996 70 3 - 4.3%
Just added a useless statistic to that data: percentages are fun!

On our way through this "backstage" maze, Bruce joined up with the group and said hello, singing "It Never Rains in Southern California" and joking with some of the older ladies. I'm not sure if they knew he was a Beach Boy or simply an enthusiastic elderly gay gentleman.

If you can wait till June-the book I worked on with Jon Stebbins will go into a lot of detail about the topic of Brian and shows he played or didn't play. Check out this link to see info on the book:

Ian, thanks for the heads-up. Remember though, that both the BBs and their fans "can't wait for June"...

Not really a real question but more of an observation that came about from listening to the SOT Smiley Smile:
Maybe my ears & memory are mixing up melodies but I do believe the melody being played during the bridge of the Smiley version of "Wonderful" is the Bicycle Rider Theme, right? I'm pretty darn positive it is and if so, oh my god. And even if we're 'supposed to' consider Smile and Smiley Smile separate from each other it makes me wonder if towards the end of the sessions Brian was considering working "Bicycle Rider" into the Smile version of "Wonderful".

You still belive in me 1:20-1:30 "so faithfully" is really off-key right? Is this one of the big off-key moments in Beach boys discography?

I'd hardly say "really" off key. Sounds to me like one of the doubles go a little bit sharp. Never really noticed it until you mentioned it though, don't think it's really that bad. You are referring to the original recording on PS, right?
Right and I'm panning left and right and my sound system is bad anyway and I get an isolated Brian Wilson. To my ears he is 100% off key on "so faithfully"

Agree, has always been that way to these ears. And to these ears the closest thing to it is what we've come to know as the Vegetables tag employed in the new mix for TSS…

I'm beginning to think of the Bicycle Rider theme as Smile's "Shortnin' Bread" riff.

Brian probably still plays it when he is home alone.

Probably!
Oh man, this whole thing gets crazier and crazier (and pretty awesome too!). It's also now hit me that "Gettin' Hungry" uses the 'the heroes the heroes the heroes an' uh villains' melody. Wow.

Concensus is, it was written specifically for the movie. No proof, mind, but likewise, no credit at the end.

In the book for The Smile Sessions, there's a tape box photo which explicitly links the music from H&V, the Vegetables fade and Wonderful. Who knows if Brian wrote it, but there it is!

What is that voice saying at 2:16 in the mono I Just Wasn't Made For These Times? Also does anyone know what that "futuristic noise" that comes in at about 0:05?

The sound at 5 seconds is a tape being rewound by accident. I'm not sure about what is said at the 2:16 second mark of the mono version.

I can't hear a rewound tape at 0:05, the only sound I detect there is a fuzz guitar or bass, but that's at many more spots throughout the arrangement, not just at 0:05. The voice seems to say "Sssst."
