On the MIU documentary "Our Team," Mike says that after Brian and himself got done playing basketball, they got the idea to record the song Our Team and he said that all the support staff were singing on it. Is that true?

Also, who all sings on Mike Come Back to LA? That's one song I doubt we'll ever see get released. I like the vocals alot, sounds like a lot of female vocals on it.

When Mike called Van Dyke's Smile lyrics  "obtuse", did he think that he was saying they're obscure? It sure seems like that.
Stupid and obtuse are synonyms. Everything except his choice of words suggested diplomacy. Mike, get out your dictionary.

Obtuse can also mean obscure if I recall correctly so that was probably what he meant, at least that's how I saw it. I could be wrong, though.

"Obscure" doesn't really make sense in this context, though.

I didn't want to waste a thread asking this (just in case there's a general consensus on this kind of thing), but I'm wondering how you guys generally divide up the band's "eras". Of course we could go by decade, but I'm thinking more music-style/sound-wise. Creative periods, if you will.

1961-64 - Surf/Car/fun years
1965-1966 - Creative peak for Brian
1967-1969 - The lost years
1970-1975 - Recovery years and great live era
1976-1977 - Brian returns
1978-1979 - Huh
1980 onwards - Surrender creative enigma to Myke Luhv

are you guys serious?? There IS a thread for this. http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,14280.0.html

When I saw the the cbs sunday morning ( I think that's what it was) , I couldn't help but recall the Shawshank Redemption warden being called
that and what an insult it was to him! So, I thought that Mike had found a neat way to covertly call something stupid (other beach boys not so good with the vocab) , or that he simply misspoke.

Perhaps he meant abstruse?

I have to ask again because I want to believe

Is there a pet sound on each and every track of Pet Sounds? Can you make the argument?

There is the "zoo intro" on Wouldn't, the galloping horse beat on God, the barking dogs on some track, the doghorn on You still... go ahead please  Embarrassed Cry Embarrassed Cry Sad

The Pet Sound was a supersonic dog whistle (undetectable to the human ear). It's on the entire album.

I was reading in Nearest Faraway Place about how Lenny W. was trying to get the suite together to inspire Brian (before Rio Grande came up)...There was a description about Brian's idea of a Saturday busy day with kids playing and everyone doing their thing. I'm sure this is Saturday Morning in the City...and it also described the night life....which I've seen the title Saturday Night in the City. Was this recorded? Does anyone have info about it? How crazy would it have been had SMITC and Saturday Night had been the suite ending BW88? I'm sure Rio Grande is rather preferred over the other....just a thought.

It's sad, isn't it? The guy has the balls to say he would like to personally like to go to people's houses who download his music and haul their ass off to jail. That's not the typical "I know I'm rich, but I'm fighting for the little guy" thing either.

Sorry for bringing up the tired "downloading music on the internet" thing. Above all else, Gene and his band suck ass. That's the saddest part of it all.

His cover of "Firestarter" was among the worst things I've ever heard and his son is ugly.

I HATE THIS MAN.

I was looking at the Back to Mono boxset booklet, which is fab, but I thought it was odd that Brian get's a credit as a keyboard player and his picture is featured with other artists/Wrecking Crew members (the dark red/white stripe, famous from PS sessions photos) I've actually not seen the pic anywhere else except in that booklet.

I honestly thought Brian just played piano on one of the Christmas tunes and/or The Times Are Chaging (bythe Blossoms) and Phil had Brian leave during the session anyways...though he did later get a pay check for it...I found his credit sorta confusing.

The credit was for "Things Are Changing" (correct title). His name is probably on the session sheet, but it's unlikely that his playing made it onto the final mix. As the legend goes, Phil kicked Brian off the session because either a) his playing wasn't up to snuff or b) it wasn't what Phil was looking for.
