"Love You" is my favorite album, but I don't know much history behind its release.  Anyone have any information/stories/interviews about this time period?

I know they (the band and Landy) rushed Brian into the studio to make 15 Big Ones, which was originally supposed to be all oldie covers but ended up deviating from that for some reason.

Then they gathered together some tracks such as "Marilyn Rovell", "Lazy Lizzy", and "You've Lost that Loving Feeling (cover)" to put together an album but somehow that one didn't make it through.

Then Brian started working on "Brian Loves You" by himself using some songs written during his sessions with Landy in the recording studio (source is WIBN biography), and some old-unused songs ("Good Time", "Ding Dang").  Somewhere along the line he played the songs for some members of the group (on "Lucky Dog Demos" bootleg and others) and they convinced him to make it a Beach Boys album.  Sometime after that he lost interest and Carl had to finish it up.

Then he recorded the big band album, "Adult Child" but couldn't maintain the atmosphere/style through the whole album so some of the stuff doesn't fit.  Rejected by music company.

Made another compilation of the stuff off the unreleased compilation and again it didn't get released for whatever reason.

Since most of the stuff he recorded didn't get released, and generally wasn't really appreciated he lost interest in recording also due to his re-descent back into drugs/madness.

Anything else?  Brian claimed the song, "I Wanna Pick You Up" is about pretending your lover is a baby.  "The Night Was So Young" was inspired by a woman Brian was having an affair with (?).

Sorry if this stuff isn't true, it is all the information I've read about!

I understand that Love You and Adult Child were the only ones actually considered for release. New Album was probably just a collection (like "Landlocked") that was filled with finished songs the group could consider for their next LP. Todd Gold is a bad soruce. the Byron Priess book has a lot of info on this period that is fairly level  headed.

"The Night Was So Young" was written about Debbie Kiel.

Now we know. LOL

Looks like Marilyn was a really tolerating wife. Roll Eyes So "My Diane" wasn't just a brother sings for sister joke..?

Of course Landy claims in this book that he was involved in the writing process. Is it true?
"Good Time" was already released on the Spring album, but since nobody bought that, it was more or less new.

I read that LY was also rejected by the music company first. I wonder what the rejected tracklist would have been...

Was 'Marilyn Rovell' recorded before or after 'Love you', I definitely think that should have been on there, perhaps in place of 'Good time'. Putting Lazy Lizzie (definitely one of the sleaziest Brian songs) on there may have been a step too far what with 'I wanna pick you up' and 'Roller Skating child' already pushing the boundaries!  Shocked

And that's what he said, lol.  Actually, it's not a bad way to write a song, besides the weirdo factor.  You have unconditional love for your children so a technique to write a really good love song is to write the song about your children, then change the words to make it about your lover.  Kind of creepy but lots of people have done it.... and this isn't really a proper love song, but did I mention that Brian Wilson is insane?  At the time he was also kind of a drug addict and a drunk.  Or maybe that had stopped by then.  Anyways, he has his bad side, lol.

The inspiration for RSC supposedly came from watching Carnie at an ice-skating rink.  Brian probably changed it to rollerskating because of the rollerskating disco craze that was around at the time.  That might explain the "brrrr" part of the song , thinking of ice-skating rinks.  I vaguely recall reading that Landy took the credit for adding the rollerskating sound effect at the end of the song.  He was so talented.

I like the Adult Child stuff better as well as the old New Album boot. Love you didn't include the best of these sessions in my eyes.
