More cross-pollination, I'm afraid. Cottonwood Hill by krautrock band Brainticket was cited by TheSuperMetroid02 as an example of great use of the spoken word in pop. Although I was quite taken with it, I'm told Celestial Ocean is the quintessential Brainticket album so that's where I'm heading later today...

Oh, boy. What in the world have I been listening to lately?
So, uh, I guess this is an album everyone else has heard, and since I didn't know what to listen to on this Tuesday afternoon, I just went with this. I'm quite a fan of the album cover and the first few songs.

in the past week or two or so:

In Mind - Real Estate / current favorite: "Stained Glass"
This album is nice. I think they've expanded their sound a bit; with every album they sound a little less... "same-songy." This album seems to get better with every listen.

My Favorite Things - John Coltrane / current favorite: c'mon, now.
I remember last summer when I first started hanging out with Bubs, we were record shopping, and he slyly placed a copy of this album in my ever-growing CD pile. I think I was intimidated by the 13-minute long title track, but perhaps an increase in lone bus-riding time has led me to listen this song (and album) enough to really appreciate it. Coltrane and co. really take you on an auditory journey on this one.

Yours Conditionally - Tennis / current favorite: "In the Morning I'll Be Better" & "Modern Woman"
I thoroughly enjoy this lady's voice. This husband and wife duo can certainly make dreamy, coastal tunes. I guess my main complaint is that the only song that really sweeps me off my feet is "Modern Woman," and it's the second to the last song. Nevertheless, the album as a whole is lovely to listen to, a summer record indeed.

Heartworms - The Shins / current favorite: "Painting a Hole"
I'm pretty sure people who are trying to describe me often throw in the phrase "that girl who is unnaturally obsessed with the Shins." I guess they're not far off, and as an unnaturally obsessed fan, I have to say I'm quite dissatisfied with their newest album. Here I was, expecting James Mercer to reach new heights, further expanding the their sound beyond what they'd done on Port of Morrow (listen to the title track to understand what I'm saying). The teasers on instagram always sounded mesmerizing and cool. While the first few singles that were released weren't unlikeable, I didn't find myself listening to them on repeat like normally would. And don't even get me started on "Mildenhall." I mean, good grief, is this still a Shins song? Did Mercer just open up a children's book and start singing? If I ever buy the CD, I'll probably just make it one of those songs iTunes automatically skips.
All that said, some tracks are pretty enjoyable. I like "Name for You," "Painting a Hole," and "Fantasy Island." "Dead Alive" is pretty good, too, although that's been out for some months now.

"Third of May / Ōdaigahara" - Fleet Foxes
Guys, I am pumped. Stoked. Amped for this new Fleet Foxes album. Maybe I'm premature in stating this, but this will probably be my favorite release of the year, seeing as the Shins were able to disappointment me. I quite like how things get a little weird around the 3:30 mark, and, Lord, if those last 2-3 minutes aren't some of the most beautifully produced sounds Fleet Foxes has yet come out with. It seems that Robin Pecknold used a motley of instruments on this record, and I'm excited about that, too. Oh, and I'm going to see them at least once this year. After your mentioning of this, I gave "Afro Blue" a listen, and I can see why you enjoy it so much. But it also makes me wonder why his other works haven't captured your interest.

Think Chutes Too Narrow is my favorite Shins album right now.  There's something great on any of them...

Port of Marrow, I agree, is better than the new one.  Heartworm opens strong with "Name For You" - very
much in their old style.  Two of my current favorites are "Rubber Ballz" and "So Now What".

Still a big fan of Oh, Inverted World.  Love "Weird Divide" and always, "The Past and the Pending".  "Girl Inform Me"
reminds me of xtc for some reason.

Speaking of.  I got the whole Fuzzy Warbles collection recently.  Making my way through that.

"The Past and the Pending" is a great album closer.

Also, you posted an XTC song (on PSF) that I really enjoyed, off Skylarking, I believe, although I haven't investigated their music any further. But hey, a comparison to a Shins song is a good way to intrigue me .

Instead of Coltrane, I'm listening to Miles Davis at Birdland. I'm also eating a toasted bagel sandwich with an egg and everyone's favorite, Tofurky. But it is damn delicious.

Actually, I've had quite a serious Kate Bush listening session recently. Besides Never Forever, there's been The Sensual World, The Red Shoes, Director's Cut, The Kick Inside and The Dreaming.
