Way cool. Thanks for sharing that. Without doing a screen cap -  Looks like the titles are Wing Walker, Purple People, and I Hate.

Fascinating..

I don't think there would be a way for Micky to legally release those tapes and I doubt he would just put them on the Internet.

It's a shame that public might not ever hear them  Undecided

Another example of Brian meeting John Lennon. Yet Brian insists that he never met him. Of course I'm sure Brian doesn't remember a lot of things from that period.

Fantastic thread, and great work! It is not surprising at all because despite some efforts even on this board to dismiss or discredit those accounts of certain groups of these musicians hanging out together at this time, they did in fact get together and raise hell together, and Dolenz was one of the key players in the "Hollywood Vampires" group of drinking buddies. And Brian did in fact show up probably more than we'll ever know about, or more than he may remember at this point. Like Keith Moon's big party where they gave him the "Sting" suit, Brian was there photographed talking to Moon in his bathrobe but unfortunately John Lennon was off in New York that weekend witnessing a UFO from his pad (true story - look it up... Smiley).

It would seem Dolenz's "private" master tapes have remained private for 38 years or whatever it has been.

I'd love to see him post a message on his Facebook asking all the Beach Boys collectors to stop calling him and driving by his house.

So John and Brian actually met....I wonder why Brian would hide that? perhaps he is too embarrassed remembering it. Those tapes must be released!

Brian Wilson (in bathrobe) and Keith Moon? Might this picture come from that day?

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Brian's forearms seem to have the circumference, roughly, of my own thigh.

I would love a proper study of what Brian did with himself during "undocumented time."  Or more broadly, maybe a book about the whole scene from the perspective of inter-band friendships, and the social scene of musicians.  This sort of thing gets touched on, but I don't think it's ever gotten a proper...social history, I guess.  An investigation of the constellation of David Crosby yard-parties, hanging out on the strip, even going over to the Rovell's for dinner...

When most biography-type studies talk about Brian, or any prominent LA musician "after hours", it tends to focus on the unusual stuff, I think, but the mundane, everyday activities could be interesting too.  The meetings with record companies, the late night trips to get fried chicken...  I guess I'm kind of rambling.  I feel like nobody has ever quite captured the essence of coming out of the studio at 3am, into the cool Los Angeles air, and capturing what came next.

That picture is the one I mentioned in my post, from Moon's Hollywood party B-Day bash where most of his "Hollywood Vampire" friends, including Dolenz, Alice, Iggy, a few porn stars like Linda Lovelace (IIRC, need to dig out the photos), and other rockers and LA folks came out to celebrate, and one of the gifts he received was the suit Redford wore in "The Sting".

The prominent one missing was John Lennon, who as I mentioned was in New York at that exact time, and where he says he witnessed a UFO flying over New York that weekend.

The whole party I think was also organized in that big of a fashion because Moon was in the middle of promoting his solo album, which is probably why "official" photos exist of such an event where usually that crew would be doing their own thing in private.

If anyone is interested, I gathered online and elsewhere a bunch of photos from the Moon party event, unfortunately the only one showing Brian is the one posted above.

So John and Brian actually met....I wonder why Brian would hide that? perhaps he is too embarrassed remembering it. Those tapes must be released!

Dolenz wrote about at least one Lennon-Wilson-Nilsson meeting in his book which came out about 20 years ago, so it's nothing all that new as far as information, and Dolenz's house was known at this time as a late-night hangout for the same crew Lennon, Nilsson, Cooper, and the gang were a part of.

Dolenz's book has them taking acid, and Brian playing the same note on piano over and over while John stared into a swimming pool. This was at a beach house in Malibu.

Then another chapter of his book mentioned these recordings, sessions done at Micky's home studio which he built with his father-in-law, and which featured recordings of not only Brian and Harry but also Alice Cooper, Buddy Miles, Marc Bolan, and perhaps whoever else would drop in to say hi, and that apparently included Ringo when he was partying in LA.

So those tape boxes Micky shows in the newer TV interview only serve to back up what he wrote about 20 years ago, where Brian was mentioned as having recorded there and hung out.

Brian and John apparently crossed paths a bunch of times.

Here's Alice Cooper's story

Quote
“I was sitting backstage after the 1974 Grammys with Bernie Taupin (Elton John’s lyricist) and John Lennon. This was when Brian was really having some mental issues. During the course of the conversation, I kept seeing Brian out of the corner of my eye, just kind of staring at us from different angles. Finally, he came up to the table, bent down and whispered in my ear ‘Hey Alice, introduce me to John Lennon.’ I couldn’t BELIEVE that these two men had never met! They were virtually neck and neck in the 60’s as the greatest bands on the planet, and I’m SURE they must have crossed paths at some point. But then I thought to myself, ‘Wow, if they REALLY have never met, I’m going to be the one to introduce them and become a part of rock history!’ So I merely said, ‘Brian Wilson, this is John Lennon. John Lennon, this is Brian Wilson.’ Lennon was very cordial and polite, saying things like ‘Hello Brian, I’ve always wanted to meet you. I’ve always admired your work, and Paul and I considered Pet Sounds one of the best albums ever made.’ Brian thanked him and walked away, at which point Lennon went right back to his conversation like nothing had happened. About ten minutes later, Brian came by our table again, leaned down and whispered something to Bernie, and all of a sudden, Bernie was saying ‘Brian Wilson, this is John Lennon. John Lennon, Brian Wilson.’ Lennon was just as cordial and polite as the first time, saying essentially the same thing about always wanting to meet him. As soon as Brian walked away, John looked at both of us and casually said in his typical Liverpudlian accent, ‘I’ve met him hundreds of times. He’s not well, you know.’”

And May Pang

Quote
"I don't remember Brian hanging out with us that much. Brian, we saw a couple of times. We saw him once at this birthday party…in fact, that was the first time that we had seen him. I think it was for Ricky Martin - I'm talking about Dean Martin's son - it was like his 18th birthday or something. I remember seeing this guy - and this was at a time when he was really heavy - and I saw him coming towards us and went, "Oh my god". And I whispered under my breath, as I did quite often with John, "The man that's about to come over to us is Brian Wilson. Remember, we saw Dennis Wilson, his brother, the other day? This is Brian…Beach Boy". And John turned around and he was like, "Ohhh". Just as Brian was about to speak, John spun around and said, "Hi Brian". And you could see this look in Brian's eyes as he said, "Hey man, you have any reds?" John looked at him and said, "Don't do that stuff, sorry man". And he walked away. That's where Brian was at that moment in time. "

I find this photo one of the most fascinatiing ever. Look at the intricate jacket that Keith Moon is wearing, and then look at Brian. He is wearing, well....a terrycloth bathrobe. With no shirt underneath. And, doesn't it look like Brian was twice the size of Moon. You laugh to keep from crying.

It's almost like Brian became a freak show. "Let's see what crazy things we can get out of him...." You almost get the feeling that Brian slept all morning and afternoon, then went to somebody's pad - every night? - and fried his brain. It's hard to believe he didn't die in his sleep of some kind of overdose.

If that song turns out to actually be about Harry Nilsson, that would make me very happy.
