That's what an iPod playlist is for. :-)
Troof, but that doesn't excuse them for putting together such an odd tracklist.

Actually scratch that, Capitol LOST the master tape while working on Stack O' Tracks.
HOWEVER, our buddy Mr. Desper apparently made a copy! I'm not sure if it's a mono mixdown or master tape copy, however.
He copied an acetate to his Revox, or so he told me back in 1985. Plus, it was Carl and/or SWD who lost the tape, not Capitol. The story is well-known

General rule: If there's a stereo mix for it and it's not an extraction mix, it's on here, with the exception of "Do You Wanna Dance?" (probably due to the minimal amount of "extracting"). If there are multiple stereo mixes, it's the 2012 one, not any earlier ones.
Still in mono: "The Little Girl I Once Knew", "I Get Around", "Do It Again", "Surfin' Safari", "Help Me Rhonda", "Fun Fun Fun", and "Good Vibrations".
The stereo mixes of "Wild Honey" and "Darlin'" are exclusive to this collection so far, as is the single mix of "Isn't It Time"

I had no idea. The only thing I'd heard about "Do It Again" was Brian attempting to erase or destroy the master before the album mix was done and Steve's backup coming to the rescue, but I think that was said to not be true.

Isn't it that, driving from the studio where Carl & Stephen mixed it down to Brian's house, it flew out the back of Carl's convertible and they had to quickly chop together the mix we know and love?

One of the most perplexing sequences of a comp I've ever seen...
- In between "Catch A Wave" and "Surfin' USA", let's put a song about a motorcycle
- After "The Warmth Of The Sun", a song about loss, follow that up with the "meeting" song, "Please Let Me Wonder".... And now here we are together....
- Celebrate the summer romance with "All Summer Long", then follow it with "help me get her out of my heart..."
- I always thought "Friends" would be a good follow-up song to "Surf's Up"....
- "Wouldn't It Be Nice" and THEN "Good Vibrations"? How 'bout the other way around? And why do they insist on closing albums/sides with "Good Vibrations" anyway?

I don't think it was meant as a rock opera. Anyway, Brian is the guy who put Cassius Love before The Warmth Of The Sun on Shut Down 2. Maybe he sequenced this comp.

I think we're mixing up two different stories.
* Desper and Carl spent something like a sleepless night mixing 'Do It Again' in stereo because it was due at Capitol the net day. They made a dub of it in mono to a Revox machine to check for mono compatibility.
* On the way to Capitol the next day, the stereo mix tape fell out of the car and was lost. They rushed back to the studio and grabbed the mono reference dub, and delivered it to Capitol. The 8-track master was still fine at this point, but they didn't have time to do the mix all over again.
* During the making of 'Stack-O-Tracks', Capitol lost the 8-track master. So now the only master of 'Do It Again' is that mono fold-down, which every subsequent release has been made from (including the duophonic version on '20/20').

Interesting about the original stereo mix. Good thing they checked for mono compatibility!
But, how did the isolated tracks show up on SOT? Surely the master had to be recovered at some point (only to disappear again??).

I believe that some sort of 4-track multi was still around when the SOT people got some isolated tracks and what not, but from that tape, originally, there was some sort of transfer to 8-track for further overdubs and that's what was lost during the Stack-O sessions. Then, later, the SOT 4-track was lost, after the bootleg had been made. Or something like that.

fell out of the car? dafuq? this is legit story?
there seems to be a degree of incompetence associated with this group. Can't quite point it out, but failings are to be found many places.

Like I said in mine, it was a convertible and it literally just seems to have flown out of the car. But everyone makes mistakes, I guess.

So....how does a reel of tape fly out of a (convertible) car? Furthermore, how do the two people in the car not notice? This is a bizarre account.

I wish Carl and Steve had been filmed the entire time all this happened. I bet, if properly edited, it'd have been Gosh darn hilarious. I hate to use this example, but I picture the interplay between them throughout all this being similar to the episodes of Family Guy that feature Stewie and Brian getting into some ordeal together.

No one said they didn't notice - they were probably on a highway and couldn't get it. You would think the tape would be heavy enough not to be taken with wind, but hey, I've had stuff fly out from my backseat that I didn't think was gonna move. I'm guessing they didn't wanna keep it in the trunk due to the extreme heat?

It didn't even occur to me to consider WIND and it being BLOWN AWAY, haaa. I figured the most likely of unlikely scenarios was Carl and Steve finding themselves in a situation not unlike a scene out of the A-Team--speeding down hilly roads and bouncing a few times when landing, dodging explosions, and maybe even driving off a cliff but making it onto the other side. It would make sense then that the reel would fly out at some point and go unnoticed until they arrive at the Capitol tower (with the car in near perfect shape, of course) only to find out that the backseat is empty.

Even though it was a convertible, maybe it was left on the trunk lid and slid off somewhere along the route to Capitol. Somehow I doubt the wind picked up and blew the tape reel off the back seat.
