As I recall the Japan Who remasters with awesome bonus tracks from last year (which STILL haven't been issued here in North America! Grrrrr!  Evil) started showing up on the internets about two weeks after their release in Japan, so in this case I'd start looking in August.

No - the mono mixes are first, the stereo mixes follow.

I ordered "Today" off eBay.  If this goes well I'll consider another.  Hopefully US versions are announced before it gets to that.

Nice! Hope you get it soon (report back with pictures and details!). If they were just a little cheaper I would consider buying a few. At the Ebay/Amazon JP price, I just can't swing it.

Correction - Capitol Japan has released them. It's their baby and nothing to do with the parent company in the USA. There are many Japanese only Capitol releases. Maybe Capitol USA will pick up the ball and run with it... maybe they have other plans like, say, a 50th anniversary GH collection and a rebooted career-spanning box set to concern them right now. We'll see.

No reason to expect a U.S. release of these limited-interest discs.

The fact that people here seem to seriously believe there is a profitable U.S. audience for mono/stereo releases of Beach Boys albums (without bonus tracks!) shows how incredibly unrealistic their worldview is.

So, if this is indeed the case, can we ever expect these albums do go down in price?

And...is there a possibility of seeing these mixes available digitally? That would be of little cost to the Capitol/EMI, and they'd most likely turn a profit, no?

I doubt that there would be any profit if based only our little corner of the Internets.  Wink  But $33 bucks a pop plus shipping, is a wee bit high for my tastes. I may buy a couple if reports are good from the few who have bought them, so far.

I totally see what you're saying. I don't see the average person, or even the average rock 'n roll fan saying, "hey, I really want to go pick up the Surfer Girl CD by The Beach Boys."

However, nearly all of The Beach Boys contemporaries from the '60s have all of their albums out there, and not in twofer form. So, while I see your point, I think at the least, maybe Capitol could consider issuing a box set of their '60s albums, and then another box set of their album from 1970 and beyond. And obviously keep Pet Sounds and SMiLE out there to be bought separately, and maybe do deluxe reissues of Sunflower and Surf's Up.

Regardless though, I'm happy enough to be getting the upcoming new box set and the new songs that come with the hits album.

Andrew's post seemed to have a "A 50th anniversary GH collection and a career spanning box set is being talked about, but don't hold me to it" vibe to it. Maybe I just read into it that way.

Either way, exclusively releasing stereo mixes of "America's Band" only in Japan? Nop. Even casual fans have been bitching for stereo mixes of their older stuff for years now. We'll see these mixes in one form or another sooner or later, I really have to think. Maybe not these specific discs with this specific packaging, but yeah - unless you're Bruce Johnston, I'd hold off on buying these at least a little while longer.

I'd say The Beach Boys have a fanbase bigger than The Monkees, and that's a band that sells mono/stereo/deluxe issues.
Kinks too.

As each month passes by, it will be increasingly difficult for anyone(even Mr.Doe) to defend Capitol & The Beach Boys' "Wall of Secrecy" policy. Next week, it will be 8 months since the December 2011 announcement of "50th Anniversary" commemorative CD product. Capitol's refusal to let fans know where they(the fans) stand with respect to possible future U.S.A./UK/Europe release of the new remixes, is Capitol showing total contempt for the fans. Remember, these fans are the people who still want to buy music on CD, that is, if it is readily available and priced within reason. These Japanese discs are priced abnormally high, even by Japanese standards.

If Capitol wants people to buy these new remixes(instead of pirating them), then release the remixes in at least one country other than Japan, so that fans can buy the remixes at a reasonable price. Doing mail order editions(similar to WEA's "Rhino Handmade" product or Universal Music's "Hip-O Select" product) would be a possible solution.

I'm with you to the point where I wish Capitol would define exactly what this Box Set is going to consist of, as I said earlier, them words can mean many things.

I've been waiting and waiting for definitive versions of these albums before I go buying the entire catalog. If these + the 70s, 80s, and 90s albums were released with the right mastering (i.e. no insane compression and limiting like the 2000 masters and recent compilations), stereo/mono mixes with bonus tracks, I'd buy that sh*t in a second. Well, I'd buy it slowly over the course of a few months (assuming they'd release them as stand-alone packages), but still, I'd be all over that. I know I'm not alone.

Key to what we might get outside of Japan might be knowing more about the providence of the mixes: was Mark commissioned to do them by EMI USA, and the files were subsequently licences by EMI Japan; or was the project commissioned by EMI Japan from the off; or am I way off the mark and this was BRI-run project? Or is it sowmthing Mark and Boyd have been toying with on and off for h years, in their spare time, and EMI Japan's just seized an opportunity?

If AGD doesn't drop his pants of secrecy and confess, he will not be able to dodge the blame of silence for much longer.

I'll also add that I'm not a fan of this idear at all, especially if we're talking lossy formats exclusively. Lossless options might sway me, but otherwise, nah - their catalog deserves a proper, respectable, and complete re-release (yes, even Summer In Paradise and Still Cruisin'). The 2000 and 1990 remasters certainly weren't awful, but they had faults which shouldn't exist and hopefully won't be present on any future releases of them.

I think it would be worth it for Capitol USA to release at least some of these. Yeah, not that many people are going to go out and buy a copy of Surfer Girl for the sake of hearing it in mono, but stereo mixes of Today! & Smiley Smile would probably warrant coverage in all major publications and would most likely come with a major reassessment (think Best New Reissue on Pitchfork and such) leading to an expanded consumer base. And that would really prime everyone for the Wild Honey Friends remixes that we're all praying are in the pipeline.
