The CD Japan (my favoured site for buying Japanese CDs) story makes me think the albums are coming out in the west.

Limiting who sells the CDs so that a popular exporter doesn't sell them suggests they are trying to 'region lock' the albums.

The only reason I could see them doing that would be to preserve sales elsewhere for later.

If there's no news for a western release come December I'll pick some up in Japan on holiday but hopefully by September (is that the end of the tour?) we should know one way or the other.

Yeah, but what about Amazon Japan and Amazon U.S.? Nothing stopping them from shipping around the world, except maybe, price. Wink

Limiting where they are sold helps drive up the price. Is this intentionally being done for this purpose?

There are not enough fans in the U.S. or Europe to make releasing them profitable.

Well of course, won't they be profitable if they are charging $50 a disk???

They are $43.99 a pop at Amazon US.

Now they're 50. What a joke. Here I was hoping they would go down.

Amazon's 3rd party suppliers will charge (at least) slightly less, but Amazon doesn't permit the 3rd party sellers to offer a product until AFTER Amazon offers it. 3rd party sellers on Amazon aren't permitted to offer anything for preorder.

Good to know.  I guess I'll wait for the 7th to roll around then. Thanks!

Again, I'll ask, does anyone know what to search to find these on amazon.com?

Zach, just search on Beach Boys, by release date.  They are all there, now OVER $50.

Boy, when I bought 2 of these yesterday I didn't realize I was getting a DEAL for $43.99.  YIKES!

Probably do better on EBay.

LOL I'm an idiot.  Thank you!

Mr.Doe(who is from England) would likely not be surprised by EMI's attempt to control what dealers can or can't sell EMI's product. Back in Mr.Doe's infancy(in the 1950's), in the UK  you had to be an authorized dealer to sell EMI records. Other record shops couldn't sell EMI product. And if you collect vintage vinyl, and you've seen pre-1969 EMI/UK vinyl, the labels say "Sold in The UK subject to resale price conditions. See Price lists." This was a nasty price fixing scheme to prohibit discounting.

I can't understand how capitol felt there was enough demand to release the US singles boxset, but not enough to release at least the capitol albums in a nice boxed collection.

It was a failed experiment.

The box didn't sell, and the planned second set (for the second half of the Capitol singles) was not released.

that box was horribly marketed, looked like a cardboard box one puts hamburgers in, and generally just a mish-mash of known songs and less familiar and often not too good songs. Who wants to listen to Little Honda? no one but Bruce and Mike it appears, doesnt recieve ovations at concerts. at least the later deep cuts are admired more as good music while Little Honda sounds like filler (it is a good song when listening carefully, but very easy to dismiss as a throwaway...)

It didn't sell because it had 16 cd's, with only 4 songs on each. And being 16 cd's, it was mad expensive. That's why no one bought it!

The track listing made sense - it was their singles and EP's in chronological order up to a point. Little Honda was on there 'cuz it was on their EP. I love that song. Better than the Hondells version.

(wait, are you talking about the Good Vibrations box while we are talking about the Singles box?)

Little Honda was released in the U.S. as 45 EP along with Wendy, Don't Back Down & Hushabye. It had to be included. It was not a mish-mash, but actual 45 releases, along with their stereo counterparts.

In concert, there are many great songs that do not receive great applause. Say, almost everything after 1966. Wink

For CD counterfeiters in the former Soviet Union, the pricing and restricted availability of these 12 Japanese Beach Boys CD's will be like a license to print money.

Guys, I don't want to sound like a square but I don't like the idea of Russian counterfitters and Bit Torrents.  I realize these prices are absoulutely ridiculous, but the price is the price.

Before everyone jumps the gun on going the black market route, give Capitol a little time to get their crap together.  It is still only July and we still are going to see an announcement sometime in the near future (my money is on August) about a box set and a hits collection

I agree with you about the counterfitters, and I don't think people are going to be paying for them (counterfeits) even if they are offered.
If you're gonna spend money, you'd just pony up for the imports in Japan....

Such a box set might contain selected tracks from the new remixes, but entire albums? Unlikely. In August, it will be 8 months of the "Wall of Secrecy". Capitol has had plenty of time to (as you say) "get their crap together", but they haven't....or don't want to.

Phil, why do you care so much??!? Is all this really that important?

Not gonna lie. I really want the box set to come out and hear what unreleased gems they put on there. But I can wait. When it comes, it comes. Especially since those who are in the know say it is coming this year.

But alas, even when it does get announced, you will likely say that they've taken too long to release it, that you would've picked better previously unreleased songs, that Sandoval should've done the mixes instead of Linnett, that your mix CD on the Big O site is the real place to find the goods, etc.

Nobody said the box set would contain complete albums.  Sounds like you ran out of things to complain about so you figured you'd make one up.

Not necessarily. While it isn't possible to make a definitive statement(on the basis of HMV's poor quality streaming samples) some of the new stereo mixes (on those Japanese CD's) seem to sound pretty good, especially the ones for "Smiley Smile". Obtaining these new remixes(and at reasonable prices and without difficulty) IS important.

Well, if you are a loyal fan who wants to hear previously mono albums in first-time stereo, then obviously you'll want the complete album, not two-thirds of it.

I don't get what you're complaining about. Well actually, I do know what you're complaining about, but I think it's ridiculous. Buy the albums from Japan, or wait it out. If you can't afford them now, save up.
Stop being negative and be happy that the stereo mixes of Smiley Smile, Today and Summer Days finally are out there.

Honestly, I don't think there is any waiting out. As far as EMI/Capitol releases, the U.S. has never released any Beach Boys stuff the same as Japan.

Phil also posted a couple pages back that he couldn't find the new remasters on eBay when they are right here:
