Hey guys,

I'm currently editing my interview with Mark Linett, who helped co-produce the new SMiLE Sessions.  I also just had a lengthy chat with Domenic Priore, the foremost authority on everything SMiLE.  That interview will be posted soon.  I've given a little sneak preview on my blog:

http://www.iconfetch.com/tonys-blog/413-smile-sessions-blog-post-5.html

I'm also finalizing other interviews with musicians who either played on the sessions or had a chance to hear the work in progress.  I'll keep you posted.

Thanks,

Tony

All due respect to Dom, but I question the descriptor of "foremost."

All due respect to Dom, but I question the descriptor of "foremost."

If "foremost authority" means makiing up lots of stuff and presenting it as fact ... then yes, he is indeed the foremost authority.

Does Dom talk about "link tracks" in the interview?  How about his contention that all the recording was complete by May, and that it only needed to be mixed?  I'd love to hear the foremost authority on Smile explain all of that in light of what we're getting in the box set.

And perhaps insist one more time that there's a version of "Do You Like Wo"---uhh, sorry, "Do You DIG Worms" -- sitting in the vaults with the "Sandwich Isle lyrics" intact (cf. Fishwrap)...

Seriously, though, I like Dom...he gave me a tape compilation of some killer surf tunes some years ago...he'll always be okay in my book for that. Smiley

Something just occurred to me...

What's happening is they're offering us the chance to put together our own Smile albums...kinda like how years ago there were extremely wild rumors about how there was going to be a Smile CD-ROM that would have a build-your-own-Smile feature...well, THIS IS IT!

Yes, no doubt. I think Alan Boyd himself even said as much in one of these threads (here or at Da Hoff), saying (paraphrasing) "Disc one is for the general public, the box set is for US" -- meaning, those who are going to study every little fragment and piece together our own custom "SMiLE"...

Check your copy of Psychedelic Sounds. I'm still trying to find where Brian farts into his piano but the cd is so boring it's hard to listen to it all the way through.

Trying to compile a list of SMiLE songs that have been or have never been available in stereo/mono not including the upcoming set. Let me know if this is correct:

Mono:
01. Our Prayer: Yes (GV box set)
02. Gee: Yes (GV box set)
03. Heroes And Villains: Yes (various)
04. Do You Like Worms (Roll Plymouth Rock): Yes (GV box set)
05. I’m In Great Shape: Kinda (mono "vocal" on Endless Harmony. Other section I believe hasn't)
06. Barnyard: Kinda (mono "vocal" on Endless Harmony. Other parts have on boots).
07. My Only Sunshine (The Old Master Painter / You Are My
Sunshine): Yes? (Can never tell if the boot is in stereo or if it's just in terrible quality  LOL)
08. Cabin Essence: No
09. Wonderful: Yes (GV: box set)
10. Look (Song For Children): Think there's a boot that has one but not sure.
11. Child Is Father Of The Man: Yes on boots.
12. Surf’s Up: With the exception of the demo vocal, no.
13. I Wanna Be Around / Workshop: No
14. Vega-Tables: Yes (GV box set)
15. Holidays: Yes albeit in bad quality on box set.
16. Wind Chimes: Yes (GV box set)
17. The Elements: Fire (Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow): Some boots have mono mixes.
18. Love To Say Dada: Yes (GV box set)
19. Good Vibrations: Yes (various)

Stereo:
01. Our Prayer: Yes (20/20 with later overdub)
02. Gee: Think so. I know it sounded in true stereo on PC's mix.
03. Heroes And Villains: Yes (Hawthorne, CA)
04. Do You Like Worms (Roll Plymouth Rock): Yes (various boots have stereo sections)
05. I’m In Great Shape: Kinda. Tracking session booted is in stereo I believe.
06. Barnyard: No
07. My Only Sunshine (The Old Master Painter / You Are My
Sunshine): Again, can't tell
08. Cabin Essence: Yes (With various overdubs on 20/20)
09. Wonderful: Not the harpsichord version.
10. Look (Song For Children): Yes. Most boots have stereo sections
11. Child Is Father Of The Man: Yes. Most boots have stereo sections
12. Surf’s Up: Yes (Surf's Up)
13. I Wanna Be Around / Workshop: Yes. Boots always seem to have this in stereo.
14. Vega-Tables: Yes (various boots)
15. Holidays: No but some fake stereo versions are out there.
16. Wind Chimes: Yes (various boots)
17. The Elements: Fire (Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow): Yes (various boots)
18. Love To Say Dada: Yes (One boot has this in bad quality)
19. Good Vibrations: Technically impossible  LOL

Mono:
01. Our Prayer: Yes (GV box set)
02. Gee: Yes (GV box set)
03. Heroes And Villains: Yes (various)
04. Do You Like Worms (Roll Plymouth Rock): Yes (GV box set)

06. Barnyard: Kinda (mono "vocal" on Endless Harmony. Other parts have on boots).
07. My Only Sunshine (The Old Master Painter / You Are My
Sunshine): Yes? (Can never tell if the boot is in stereo or if it's just in terrible quality  LOL) - This is indeed a mono mix with the vocal overdub.
08. Cabin Essence: No
09. Wonderful: Yes (GV: box set)
10. Look (Song For Children): Think there's a boot that has one but not sure. - Yes, available on Vigotone Smile (but listed as Holidays).
11. Child Is Father Of The Man: Yes on boots.
12. Surf’s Up: With the exception of the demo vocal, no.
13. I Wanna Be Around / Workshop: No - Actually it is availalbe in mono, on Vigotone Smile (even longer than the stere version)
14. Vega-Tables: Yes (GV box set) - And part 2 and part 3 mono mixes on UM 17
15. Holidays: Yes albeit in bad quality on box set. - Yes, on Vigotone listed as Tones (Tune X)
16. Wind Chimes: Yes (GV box set)
17. The Elements: Fire (Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow): Some boots have mono mixes. - Yes, mono mix with fire sound effects (best quality on UM 17)
18. Love To Say Dada: Yes (GV box set) - And for the Water Chant, there seems to be a very bad quality mono mix on Secret Smile. It might be just a fold down of a stere mix/version though.
19. Good Vibrations: Yes (various)

Stereo:
01. Our Prayer: Yes (20/20 with later overdub)
02. Gee: Think so. I know it sounded in true stereo on PC's mix. - Yes, Archaeology track 24 I believe.
03. Heroes And Villains: Yes (Hawthorne, CA) - And the Cantina, Prelude to fade and some other sections as well (mostly on Archaeology)
04. Do You Like Worms (Roll Plymouth Rock): Yes (various boots have stereo sections) - Verse in stereo on UM 17, the rest of the track in stereo (mostly stereo vocals) on UM 16.
05. I’m In Great Shape: Kinda. Tracking session booted is in stereo I believe.
06. Barnyard: No
07. My Only Sunshine (The Old Master Painter / You Are My
Sunshine): Again, can't tell - Very good quality instrumental version on UM 16
08. Cabin Essence: Yes (With various overdubs on 20/20)
09. Wonderful: Not the harpsichord version.
10. Look (Song For Children): Yes. Most boots have stereo sections - Complete stereo on UM 17 (take 20)
11. Child Is Father Of The Man: Yes. Most boots have stereo sections - Yes but not of the sections used in the mono mixes.
12. Surf’s Up: Yes (Surf's Up) - (And the backing track on the Box Set)
13. I Wanna Be Around / Workshop: Yes. Boots always seem to have this in stereo.
14. Vega-Tables: Yes (various boots) - Yes, but of the verse there are only stereo version missing some overdubs (the bass I believe). Of part 2 and 3 are stereo mixes as well, but those seem to be not finished stereo mixes, just the sessions with the vocal OD in stereo (also including some studio chatter in part 3)
15. Holidays: No but some fake stereo versions are out there.
16. Wind Chimes: Yes (various boots) - Complete stereo version on UM 16, fading into a stereo version of...
17. The Elements: Fire (Mrs. O’Leary’s Cow): Yes (various boots) - Stereo on UM 16, but not including the ending part included in the apparently finished mono mix.
18. Love To Say Dada: Yes (One boot has this in bad quality) - Stereo on Secret Smile. And for the Water Chant, it is in stereo on UM 16 but with a track fading out at the start and one fading in a the end. This seems to be the best, finished stereo mix though. There is another one on UM 17, calles "Stereo Mix", which sounds like a mix as well, because it sounds different to the Vocal Overdub stereo tracks.
19. Good Vibrations: Technically impossible  LOL

Let me know if there's anything wrong

Great idea! I've added some info in the quote itself.
