Just recieved my LP from Amazon.co.uk today.

Lovely product, heavy gatefold sleeve, heavy card inner jacket....nice record.....with the magic three letters imprinted in the leadout "TML".

Yeah. its good. Not Telarc good. But almost SMiLE good...in terms of fidelity.

Actually I find it adds to the album, it sounds more rounded than the CD. Still a little shrill in the high end but it's well produced and matered.

I've got no photo editing software on this laptop and the main PC is busy but here goes.

That is quite handsome. I really like the cover for its austerity and I bet it looks even better on vinyl!

I just got mine today. I panicked when Amazon seemed unable to come up with a copy, so I cancelled my order and bought one from eBay. I got #56. Now I’m debating whether to open it or save it for posterity. How many numbered copies were pressed?

just out of curiosity. I bought my vinyl (EU) copy in The Netherlands. It does say "limited edition", but I can't find a #number# anywhere. Where is it supposed to be? (or are EU copies not that "limited"?)

Mine is the same as SMiLE-Holland's. I bought from Amazon.co.uk and it says 'Limited Edition' but there is no number, so is not part of a numbered limited edition.

That's the exact location where (I guess) the EU copy says "limited edition". O well, as long as the music is the same...

I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

5000.  Number 56 is just as rare and special as say, number 5000.  Or 1257.  Or...

Play the record!

If I just opened and played a sealed, original 1978 copy of the famous Teldec "bass drum that was heard around the world" record then you can open BWRG. I give you the authority. Go ahead and enjoy yourself.

The European version just says "limited edition". Music is no doubt the same, the EU pressing is mastered by TML according to the leadout....and that really is all you need to know about the quality.

US pressing has TML-M in the deadwax as well.

I'm amazed from the posts on this board that so many people buy records and don't even bother playing them.  Seriously, I don't care how much a record is "worth", it's meant to be played.  I've spent some decent money on various pressings that I've wanted, but they all go straight to the platter.  Any one of us could be gone tomorrow you know...  There's no reason not to enjoy what we can today.

And absinthe, I bet it felt great to break that seal!

I bought number 56 too, and I opened mine -  wonder if it's got the same music as your number 56?

Mine starts wiith Rhapsody in Blue (7 mins 53 secs), then goes into I Love You Porgie, then Do You Dig Worms, followed by Three Blind Mice and S'Wonderful.  However if you play it backwards it's an advert for K-Mart.

Hey, i got a #56 too, but I opened it and the labels damaged or something - it just says 'Smile test press '67' in scratchy handwriting. Think I'll get my money back.

I suppose I have wiped a few hundred $ off the total value of my record collection by playing certain discs. But I've had far more enjoyment from listening to them than I would from merely looking at the sealed packages. I didn't buy them to sell them on, so what use is the perceived monetary "value" ?

Its like the people who buy classic racing cars and then seal them in dust-free, hermetically sealed garages...never to see a race track or even to fire up the engines. Where is the fun in that?

Mind you, many people probably don't see the fun in LPs or classic racing cars at all.

Perfect analogy - as a music lover and a car lover, never using the cars or the records the way they were intended to be used is something I can't really understand...

...Well, I can kind of understand it: some of these people see them as an "investment", but in doing that they're preventing other people from having fun and actually enjoying playing the record or driving the car.  Undecided

But some people seem to not see them as an investment, and seem to be genuinely proud of owning such and such thing, even though they never use it. They say they're happy with just owning the thing and keeping it in "perfect condition". These people I can't understand. At all.

I've already bought several "collectible" records that were still sealed, and I've opened and played them all. Have their values decreased? Sure. Do I care? Nope. Did I enjoy listening to them? Certainly. It's the same with cars; I don't have enough money yet, but one day I know I'll buy a few classic cars with relatively low mileage, and I'll drive them as often as I can.  Cool

Regarding the BWRG vinyl, I won't buy it - I just don't like the album enough to buy it on vinyl...

You can go your own way...
I get IMMENSE joy out of looking at my collection, and I rarely, if ever, play my vinyl.
I LOVE THAT I OWN THEM
Pull out my Red/Yellow vinyl Kenny and The Cadets 45 and actually play it? ( Are you NUTS?)
I didn't buy them to sell them on, per se, but many of them of them are, indeed, an investment.
(probably for the dude that will find them in the used bin at Goodwill after I'm gone)
I don't play my Playtapes, 4 Tracks, Reels, Pick your poison... either, but it's still a THRILL knowing I have them

For you I  say:
(We) collectors aren't stopping you from enjoying them. We're simply preserving them, so that 2/3/4 generations from now, someone will be able to enjoy them the way you feel they  were intended to be used.
If you disagree with my method, so be it.
Let's agree to disagree

Yeah, well, if it's a thrill knowing you have them, if you're really enjoying owning these records, then I guess it's not as bad as viewing the records as mere investments. Still, I don't understand it.

"...preserving them, so that 2/3/4 generations from now, someone will be able to enjoy them the way you feel they were intended to be used": so, sometime in the future, someone will play the record and "damage" it. Thus, those who are born after that "someone" has damaged that record won't be able to hear it in good quality. It's just a matter of when the record won't sound good anymore. So why not use it now? Do you really think many people will have record players in 150 years, and that they'll be interested in playing a Kenny & The Cadets 45 rpm?

By preserving these records for future generations, you are stopping current generations from enjoying them! Sad (I'm not criticizing you, just underlining a fact)

The song itself will be preserved anyway, as a digital file...

Let's agree to disagree indeed  Smiley
