I was just wondering today what everyone's ranges are (I mean specific notes, not just that Mike's bass, Bruce is tenor, etc). I DID hit the search feature for "vocal range", but got a lot of results with the words "vocal", "arrangement", "strange", and "orange". Probably buried deeply in there was the result I wanted, but that's a lot of looking.

I'm not sure note for note, but most of the BBs have impressive ranges. Al has a great falsetto, as he displayed at the 73 live album. So does Bruce, and he still sings falsetto on some songs with the M+B band.

Apart from California Girls and my song choice, the boys weren't exactly 'artist of the week'....! Still, it was exciting and a little cringe to hear myself on the radio! If I can make one person like that song my job is done, and it's more royalties for them all.

Nice! When/where/how did you come to the conclusion that it is Bruce and not Carl singing the Surf's Up A5?

This is probably something everyone knows but me, but why wasn't Dennis there for "New Year's Rockin' Eve"?

IIRC, Dennis refused to wear a matching outfit.

Found this BW interview from '99. Al co-wrote Airplane? Spector rewrote Don't Hurt My Little Sister with Brian present?

Well, you gotta take that interview with several grains. There are numerous "wtf?" moments in that interview. It's just how they go sometimes. He says they never cut "Still I Dream of It" in the studio, for instance. I like the deadpan response, saying he never cared for Buddy Holly.
Concerning "Airplane", other than it just being a total "wtf" moment, it's *possible* Brian was thinking of Al's iteration of "Sail Plane Song", "Loop de Loop (Flip Flop Flyin' in an Aeroplane)." At the time of that interview in 1999, two versions of "Loop de Loop" had been released the previous year, on "Endless Harmony Soundtrack" and "Ultimate Christmas."
That '99 interview was interesting. The guy is *trying* to ask about deeper cuts and not just ask the same old questions. But it's true, when Brian says he never cut "Still I Dream of It" in the studio and you know he actually did, what do you say then? At best, you can hold up the CD with the studio version and, then what? Brian might say "oh, yeah, I guess we did." I guess if you already know he cut a studio version, you wouldn't ask the question the first place.

It honestly just seems a bit more plausible to me that Bruce would have sang it, since there is a confirmed instance of him singing in that range (Mission Pak), but not really any such example for Carl. What really convinced me, though, was a post by someone from The Fendertones about their cover of Surf's Up. They said that Bruce sang the same soprano "domino" part on the cover as he did on the original, which of course implies he sang it.
I can't find that post now though unfortunately.
If I google "fendertones" "surf's up" "bruce" "domino" I get nothing of relevance. i see Edwin Herder edited his lone post...
http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,22000.msg523644.html#msg523644
...so maybe it was there. Of course, a better googler than me may find it yet...

Wait wait, Bruce sang an A5, like, earlier this year? At age 73?? That's astounding.

Can anyone direct me to a page/thread on the "Daddy Dear" recording from the early 70s? I've tried searching and haven't come up with too much - just looking for the history of the song, the recording, etc.

Fascinating interview - sometimes he's spot on (Glen didn't play on the GV sessions, despite what he claims), sometimes he's in autopilot mode.

Can we get a Knebworth DVD with 'Happy Birthday' to Brian included now?
The world's most popular English language song is potentially free from copyright after a federal judge ruled on Tuesday that filmmakers challenging Warner/Chappell Music's hold on "Happy Birthday to You" should be granted summary judgment.

I may have asked this question before but don't remember getting an answer....
Is there a version of 'Lay Down Burden' that wasn't on Imagination around anywhere? Demo, acoustic, even whistled would be better than the album version. I love the song and want to put it on compilations etc. but the production just grates me so much.....

There's a good version on the Brian Wilson - Live at the Roxy album.
