Recently I discovered one musical site called The Record Room - excoboard.com (it is fairly good & informative, btw). What I noticed is that some posters have the same monikers as Smiley Smile people. I don't think that it's coincidence, so I'll ask this maybe silly kind of question: who are those 2 people, the 1st one looks sorta like Ewan McGregor & the 2nd one, on the right next to him, has an A. Lincoln thing going on? Or is it the one guy, since the said 2 appearances look similar? Can it (they) be one (two) of our fellows from the Smiley Smile message board? Thanks in advance.

Yeah, that's my board. I think at this point, only me, Bubba Ho-Tep and Luther post on both boards.

Not a question, but just something I think is worthwhile: the AllMusic biography of The Four Seasons (http://www.allmusic.com/artist/the-four-seasons-mn0000764185). As both a fan of the work of Four Seasons and The Beach Boys, part of the bio includes a comparison of both groups - they are shockingly similar:

"Despite this massive and long-lasting success and their 1990 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, however, The Four Seasons did not, for most of their career, enjoy the kind of critical approbation and media profile of many of their peers. In seeking to understand why, it may be useful to compare the group with a friendly rival act with which they have many parallels. Like The Four Seasons, the Beach Boys were a band known for their harmonies and influenced by such predecessors as the Four Freshmen. Despite essentially being vocal groups, both The Four Seasons and the Beach Boys were also real bands in which the members also played musical instruments. They both featured distinctive lead singers while also including another group member who was the major creative force, acting as primary songwriter and producer. (In both cases, that member eventually retired from performing to focus on writing and producing for the band.) Both groups entered the charts with their first major hits in the same month, August 1962, and went on to enormous success in the next several years. Both were among the few American performers who managed to withstand the British Invasion led by the Beatles in 1964. As the '60s went on, both adapted their music to changing styles, but ultimately suffered a decline in popularity by decade's end. Both enjoyed major comebacks in the mid-'70s, and in subsequent decades, extending well into the 21st century, both continued to perform regularly on the oldies circuit and record (at least occasionally) while undergoing extensive personnel changes such that only the lead singer remained from the original lineup. In the 2000s, both had their hits performed in Broadway "jukebox" musicals, for the Beach Boys, the flop Good Vibrations, for The Four Seasons, the hit Jersey Boys. Yet the Beach Boys, who have been immortalized in a small library's worth of books, are critically revered, while, as of 2007, not a single biography had been written of The Four Seasons, who are denigrated by some music journalists as a sort of overachieving doo wop group."

Who is the *really* deep voice who can occasionally be heard on the session tapes for wrecking crew era recordings? Voice is so deep I can't even comprehend what it's saying.

Has anyone else noticed that the chorus of That's Why God Made the Radio (song) and the verse of All Summer Long (song) are kinda similar?

No, but it does sound awfully like the main harmonica riff from "Midnight Cowboy".

So I just posted a suggestion in the most recent Esq thread, regarding the lack of information about the In Concert album and the groups concerts in general.  If anyone has definite answers they'd like to share, I figured all the (many) questions I posed would fit well in this thread too so feel free to speak up.

at one point did the beach boys have beards? I find that that can be a good marker as to figure out the date of a picture

Mike - roughly from about 1966 to 1983. Since then he's been mostly without any facial hair but occasionally has a goatee
Brian - roughly from 1974 to about 83-84. I do recall him having sort of a five o clock shadow around the time of Wild Honey.
Al - about 1971 to about 80/81
Dennis - if i recall he had some facial hair around the time of 20/20 or Friends but was mostly cleanshaven until about 1975. He had a beard from then onwards but would occasionally be clean shaven (POB release party in 77, 4th of july concert in 80 and for most of 83)
Carl - pretty much from 1971 on

They should regrow their beards in 2013.

Not really a question but I don't think it would be worth starting a new thread just to share a (blasphemous) opinion:

I think 'Our Prayer' is absolutely lovely and 'Gee' sure is gosh darn fun to listen to and occasionally (try to) sing along with but I honestly think that when one puts in Smile the first thing they ought to hear is Al Jardine (or Brian Wilson) singing, "I've been in this town so long that back in the city I've been taken for lost and gone and unknown for a long long time"

Our Prayer/Gee, imo, belongs in the b-side bin of the Smile era. Sorry.

It's only an opinion, so don't be sorry, but the place that Our Prayer works best in context is the beginning of SMiLE. It's the most spiritual piece of music I've ever heard without being religious. It kind of sums up the SMiLE mentality. I could take or leave "Gee", but in no way should it be seperated from Heroes and Villains, the joke doesn't work unless it's related to the H&V thematic structure.

My son turned one on Sunday. If he grows a beard, he's grounded. Same if he gets a tattoo or if I catch him smoking again. Or bringing a girl home again. Or smearing his nappy on my windscreen again…

how do I handle the fact that every time I listen to SMiLE I notice/realize something new: the echo chamber on Carl's lead on Cabinessence, the hihats in Surf's Up and Look, how much DYLW fuckin' ROCKS coming in off Heroes and Villains

Sorry. Got a new pair of headphones and I sat down and listened to Smile without any distractions. I haven't really even listened to it in months. I...I think I need to go sit down.

For me, the big thing about the beards is how much it changes the look of Carl and Denny. They honestly don't look like the same guys we grew to love in the late 70s and early 80s
