Helen Schneider sings "Cuddle up". Thanks to Roland from the german message board for the link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hL8iyaM60rE

I don't think it's very good, but interesting to hear such a rare song being covered

you just know that Denny, had he and his vocal chords survived into the eighties, would have been all over the power ballad thing. I kinda like it, not a patch on the original, but a good find!

New to me also! Apart from what's on Youtube, I don't know the official setlist. This appearance on Mike Douglas must rank as the most songs the band played live on a "talk" show!

Thats basically the Merv Griffin show saying, we like your old sound so we'll just play the original studio recording over your voices.

No, it isn't that at all. The Merv Griffin show didn't decide to release that medley as a single. The Beach Boys, their label and/or their various representatives did. The Merv Griffin show booked them through the band's own promotional efforts of their own (however unfortunate) release.

As for their old sound, well, the Griffin show audience was in line with the band themselves and pretty much the rest of the world by that time, preferring the old hits to anything new. (Beach Boys Medley hit #12 on the Billboard charts according to Andrew Doe's site.) Let's be honest, by this time the band abandoned new music. The last gasp at such a thing was Light Album, several years before this performance. Their most recent album at this time was the decidedly retro Keepin The Summer Alive, and while their next one, The Beach Boys had modern production, most of the tunes were even more nostalgic. They were a jukebox by this time. Merv Griffin's show had nothing to do with that.

And, the actual album that was being promoted on The Merv Griffin Show with that performance (Merv displays the album) is Ten Years Of Harmony. The Beach Boys Medley isn't even on that album! The group showed no faith in the Ten Years Of Harmony material to perform a song from that album. And, when they did choose a single from Ten Years Of Harmony, with all of those "creative" early/mid 70's tracks, it was......"Come Go With Me".

They performed one song from the album at the Merv Griffin show, it was Lady Lynda.
Do you have it? Can you post it?

I used to have it, but some fellow lost it.
That's to bad. It would have been interesting to hear them live on TV without Carl.

I don't have Riley's posts in my archive and probably can't make it sound as funny as it seemed to be.
IIRC it was when they were in the studio recording (or mixing) Marcella and talking about it. Mike was also there but totally uninterested in talking about the song but coming up with dancing moves to the song which (as always in the Beach Boys) were pretty heavily influenced by the lyrics. You know the lyrics (one arm over my shoulder, sandals dance at my feet...) so you might imagine what it looked like. My imagination has come up with some funny scenes. Maybe someone can share the story or even post Riley's original post. Sorry

You can find the original "Jack Rieley speaks" at the old Smile Shop:
http://www.thesmileshop.net/index.php/Jack_Rieley_Speaks_Part_2

Here's that particular section of Rieley talking about Mike Love's then newly developed stage moves:
Quote
On the night we finished the mix, Love came by to give it a listen. He stood in the corner of the control booth behind the mixing counsel as the tape rolled. Rather than really listening to the music we had created, Love began rehearsing his stage moves. He acted out "One arm over my shoulder" by placing his right arm over his left shoulder. "Sandals dance at my feet" had him pointing the index fingers of both hands to downward. "Eyes that'll knock you right over" found him sailing his hands from the side of his head on a downlward arc. And on "Ooh Marcella so sweet" he cradled his crossed arms and rocked them a bit. I nearly got ill.

Thanks for posting the Riley-story !

This is "Smokey places", which the BBs used as part for "Sunshine":

and (although in bad sound quality) "Little boy", which the BBs recorded as "Little girl", which then became the track to "Sunshine":
