There are other recurring issues, myths that he feels entitled to debunk. Like the fact the he is still blamed for opposing Pet Sounds. If that ain't true, and keeps being repeated, he has a right to clarify things even if it's a lost battle among some.

The flames of irritation are fanned every time Mike Love makes a backhanded passive-aggressive comment about his cousin. All of us here came to love this music, and then we all learned about the history. We all learned that without Mike Love there would be no Beach Boys. We learned that, yes, Mike Love created some of the Beach Boys most memorable lyrics. I honestly wish I had never read any interview this man gave in the last 3 years because I'd still probably have respect for the man had I not.

My favorite composer/songwriter to have ever lived is Brian Wilson. I consider him to be one of music's most brilliant contributors. Then I read the quotes OP posted. Obviously I already knew of most of them, wasn't aware of or forgot about the "Overweight, out of shape, doesn't pay much attention" line. But look at all that crap. Controlled? Doesn't sing in the range he once did? Doesn't pay much attention? Even if any of those claims have any merit - WHY THE HELL YOU WOULD YOU SAY THAT STUFF IN A PUBLIC FORUM ABOUT SOMEONE YOU SUPPOSEDLY LOVE AND CARE ABOUT? Can you imagine if Brian recently said Mike's voice isn't what it once was? Hard to imagine because Brian has something called tact.

I guess the Mike apologists are irritated about this thread because it's partially a generous showcase of the complete lack of tact that Mike Love seems to fully radiate in nearly every recent interview when he's asked about his cousin. Or the Mike apologists are irritated because they are sick of seeing hateful things being said about Mike Love. Well here's a radical thought: Maybe if Mike Love didn't say controversial passive-aggressive comments these threads wouldn't exist in the first place!

"Additionally, you can selectively choose quotes from almost anyone out of context to fit your narrative." Okay, read the quotes in context via the links OP provided. Narrative or no narrative, it's obvious that Mike has a real issue with his cousin (or the people who control him with prescription drugs...sighhhh). Of course Mike Love doesn't spend every waking moment thinking about his cousin, nor does he sit around fuming about old issues all day. He's the frontman to one of the most popularly known bands in American history. That's not even the issue. The issue is that he has made a lot of passive aggressive comments lately about one of America's (and one of the world's) most talented songwriters. That pisses some of us off. And the fact that some of you defend this guy is even more aggravating....and comical.

Thumbs Up Thumbs Up  You ain't just whistling Dixie, bro. And not that it would do any good, but hope no one is looking for myKe luHv to change his "tune" anytime soon. Instead of being a bit humble and thankful that he was lucky enough to work with his famous first cousin, he pulls crap like this which was no real surprise to me. I had this clown figured out decades ago.

I'm not against discussing any of these guys' public deeds or sayings. As long as there's mature discussion and no name-calling. But in the end, just like with our relatives, friends, acquaintances, it's up to us to dwell on their shortcomings or not. I admire these guys, and just like I do with other people that I want as part of my life story, I choose to try to concentrate on the good stuff. Personally, I like to think of this Mike Love:

Given the thread topic, the OP and the usual suspects posting as only they can, in the only way they can (can you say "set-up" ?  Grin), there was never any chance of that happening. Sadly predictable. Predictably sad.

Damn right OSD, you understand the creepy and greedy person that Mike Love is these days better than most people. No undercover PR campaign by certain folks can change that.

I may have to check this to ensure complete accuracy, but I do believe that once in a blue moon I make a post on more than one topic, a post that actually contributes towards the thread in question and the board in general. Probably.

However, a conversation with a friend recently produced something of an epiphany, a road-to-Damascus moment if you will, and now, what once angered and frustrated now amuses yet provokes pity. I'll freely admit, what you and your ilk do, you do very well, very well indeed... but it's essentially all you can do. For several reasons, simple, complex and unfathomable, this pleases me immensely.  Grin

Agreed. Just got home and had the misfortune of seeing how this thread has devolved.

The name calling and fighting needs to stop.

Here's 3 minutes of Mike Love being a dick

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaJOz7hrEHE

Try listening to the full length version - the one where you can hear Brian directing traffic from the booth before cracking up.

Sorry guys I know this is old but is it possible anybody knows what video this is? Its no longer on YT!

It's probably the one from 1967 where Mike trashes Heroes and Villains. Really over the top awful. But Brian apparently wrote the script or went along with what Mike said.
Don't know where it is now on YT but I listened to it not too long ago. Don't think it was the version AGD was referring to, though.

If one is looking for something just a *bit* potentially damning in terms of Mike and "Heroes and Villains", take a listen to the 1993 Paramount NYC show (the "boxed set" tour), where Mike tells the audience that they're "still trying to figure out what that song is about." Yes, it's just a quick line and on its surface it's just meant to funny or whatever. But considering the specific stigma Mike has about challenging "Smile" lyrics, that sort of line was a bit of a passive-aggressive swipe. It seemed more like Mike really was afraid fans of "Kokomo" in the audience would not be into a song like "Heroes and Villains." I think 1993 was the first time they had done the song since the early 80s.

He was still using that line in the late 2000's (2008?) when I saw him perform with his touring Beach Boys at a casino.

if mike love' in 1993 is still trying to figure out what Heroes + Villains song lyric's about well it's no wonder he had such fundamental problems w/ over & over the crow cries uncover the cornfield

a tip to mr. love - write down all those lyrics yourself, correctly and carefully, and look at them for awhile

Mike hasn't even been shy about how he doesn't "get" some of the lyrics. There's the infamous story Van Dyke Parks told of being called in to do a session for "Summer in Paradise" in 1992 or so, and when he met up with Mike, Mike actually literally started grilling him again about the "crow cries" lyrics. Of course, Van Dyke's answer was the same as it was in 19-freaking-66.

The best part of that story, though, was Parks describing sharing a chartered plane ride with Mike out of town afterwards and Mike offering to send him half the cost, only to be stiffed after being given an out-of-service phone number by Mike.  LOL
