"I’ve learned that you don’t put your teammates down and encourage them to do their best, and you build them up to do better, but not everyone views things that way."1 2014

“Did you like his first solo album?”

“No.”

“You didn't like it?”

“f*** no.”

“What didn't you like about it?”

“First of all the lyrics. Second of all the arrangements weren't commercial enough. Third of all it sounded like sh*t compared to what he could sound like.”2 1992

“I wonder about his health. He’s overweight and out of shape, and he doesn’t seem to pay much attention.”3 2012

“….and then just lately you know since 1968 or, what is it, 9 when he started getting heavily into hallucinogenic drugs, it kinda set him back about two decades…”4 1988

"Brian is controlled and still medicated. It used to be the indiscriminate use of street drugs, but now it’s prescribed drugs."1 2014

"I haven't heard the song yet, I am sure with Al's voice and hopefully no autotune, the song will be great."5 2015

"Al Jardine sounds fantastic. Unfortunately, Brian doesn't sing the range he once did."6 2015

Really?

“I believe it is important to remain humble...”8 2013

"I think our touring band is in better shape, vocally, since I can remember, since the original group with Carl Wilson and Dennis (Wilson) and everything,"6 2015

Right.....

"Well, I’m not doing it to make it into film. But being in India with Maharishi, meeting Marlon Brando, being friends with so many people in the music industry and some of the trials and tribulations, the ups and downs, it makes for quite a story. So I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it were to become a film."7 2015

"What's been your greatest struggle?"

"To coexist while watching the people I love choose less than life-supporting paths via drugs, alcohol or poor lifestyle decisions."8 2013

“What is the biggest regret you have for about your career and life?”

“It’s not a regret, but the biggest thing that impacted our lives is drugs…”
9

“Do you think that there are any “heroes” in the history of The Beach Boys?”

“Well, for me it was Maharishi…”10 2014

On Stage As It Is In Studio,

That snarly 1992 Goldmine interview (the "f**k no" interview) is actually one of Mike's better interviews. He says some disagreeable stuff, but it's much more unfiltered and it doesn't seem to be colored by a bunch of defensiveness or inferiority complexes or anything.

A lot of people like to say Mike isn't a d**k in some of these interviews, it's just his blunt, straight-shooter style. I generally don't agree; I find many interviews to be far from "straight shooting." But that '92 Goldmine interview is much closer to a raw, unfiltered, and sometimes entertaining interview.

I think that's the same interview where the interviewer appears to kind of laugh or scoff at Mike not being particularly familiar with or interested in what's out on CD from their catalog, etc. That slightly antagonistic interview style ended up getting a really good, detailed interview out of Mike. I wonder if he'd do such an interview now.

I respect Mike as an artist, and feel like he's underrated as far as his contributions (and hell, I actually LIKE LBWL), but many of these are indefensible.  If one were to compile a list of negative BW quotes towards Mike, it'd be a lot smaller.

It's fun to pick on Mike because he makes it so easy.  I definitely have zero hate towards the man though.

At this point he's as famous for being Kevin Love's uncle as he is for writing the lyrics to "Good Vibrations".  I guess it all balances out.

What's the point of starting a hate thread? Posting controversial quotes into a medium with strong antagonism just in order to stir the predictable reaction is typical online lynching. I see no place for it in a fan forum. And before someone points that we're here to give opinions, I say this is much different from debating.

If the point is condensing all nonsense and agression from anti-Mike posters into one single thread, then seconded. Alas, they'll continue to spill their bile onto other threads.

I think collecting quotes, especially with citations back to the full original articles, is actually a really interesting and important thing that can be done.

Ideally, it would encompass much more than just select quotes that don't reflect well on Mike. So maybe the point of this thread wasn't constructive. But the actual compiling of the information is useful, and it isn't without merit to pull a bunch of quotes from one person to show a potential pattern. But ideally, it would have more context and promote some useful discussion.

I'm not sure how that can be done, but I'm not prepared to say that my preference would be to not post a series of unflattering quotes from Mike if the alternative is to just avoid the topic altogether because it's too inflammatory.

I tried a thread (last year or earlier this year) where I was truly just trying to dissect what happened with the band at the end of 1997 (the quotes from Elliott Lott saying Mike didn't want to appear on stage with Carl, etc.), and even after a long post with tons of disclaimers that I was looking for a scholarly conversation about it, it still turned into a big clusterfudge. But then again, that thread did rebound and we got some new, important info on the topic from Ray Lawlor. So I dunno....

The world is richer for having in it arrogant, opinionated and yes, even dick-ish people. Certainly Mike is not the only ego-driven frontman in rock history. Arrogance comes close to being a job requirement.

The only above-listed quotes that trouble me are the ones evincing lack of self-awareness (the importance of humility), or that display a clueless self-delusion (the potential of a Mike Love movie).

I don't practice TM, but I respect it. But man, Mike's lack of self-knowledge after 50 years of adherence isn't great advertising for the beneficial effects of TM.

But, I like the guy anyway, flaws and all -- as indeed I like all the Beach Boys, past and present. These deeply flawed men created something beautiful.

I can't really disagree with any of that. I think the firestorm comes when folks don't defend some of Mike's comments by pointing out that the world needs a-holes, but by denying that there's anything inflammatory in his comments at all, or denying that objectively he comes across poorly whether he meant to or not or whether it's justifiable or not.

Some straight-shooting commentary from some borderline d***s wouldn't be all a bad thing in the BB universe sometimes. But Mike's comments too often have the appearance of being heavily weighed down by ultra-defensiveness and insecurity.

It is indeed a lack of self-awareness that can sometimes be most troubling. But I would argue he has an overarching lack of self-awareness when he gives numerous inflammatory interviews and then, when occasionally tossed the softball "are you unfairly painted as the villain?" question, has a LOT to say on that topic.
