He stated in interview - maybe youtube hid it - that the RS didn't like it & would disallow to air it by radio - or MTV is it?

Anyhoo, why this thread is "Lounge"? What's it mean in title phrase? B. Waves is too strange.

I'll look around for your interview. Wink

I'd forgotten that The Communards had done a stunning version of "Never Could Say Goodbye", best known to me from Gloria Gaynor's disco romp:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hvlv5qrhDUM

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Communards

That is a great version.
Gloria Gaynor does a good job. I LOVE Isaac Hayes's super soulful take. Although it's okay, my least favorite is the original version by the Jackson 5.

Don't know why I don't appreciate 80s popular music. The first few years had some great songs.
Probably my favorites are:
Joe Jackson - Steppin Out
Eurythmics - Would I Lie to You
Billy Joel - Allentown, Pressure

Also remember enjoying music from the DBs, Stray Cats, Men at Work, The Gap Band, Thompson Twins, Elton John, Style Council. Plus some "legacy" artists did some great songs -Paul Simon, Steve Winwood, The Kinks.

Starting around 1985 or so I started getting into a lot of alternative stuff, after starting a subscription to a magazine called 'Dirty Linen' which focused on folk, ethnic, and various alternative bands. One group I particularly fell in love with was Los Lobos. I bought an album by them, 'How Will the Wolf Survive?' that totally blew me away.

Their opening song is "Don't Worry Baby." It's not the Wilson/ Christian version. Totally different. Definitely worth your while if you are interested in some great rockin music.

He stated in interview - maybe youtube hid it - that the RS didn't like it & would disallow to air it by radio - or MTV is it?

Found this:

"[...] Godstar was kind of a hit. It was number one in the indie charts for 16 weeks and reached 29 in the national chart. Our then manager was really excited. But then got a call from [UK radio station] Radio 1 saying they couldn’t play the record. They explained that they had been called by the Rolling Stones’ office saying that if they played it, they wouldn’t be able to ever play a Rolling Stones song on the radio again. It’s because there’s a moment in the video for the song, which asks ‘where were all your friends last night?’ and Mick and Keith crossing the screen laughing.

"In all interviews, we were saying that Brian Jones was murdered. And it’s recently been proved that this was indeed the case. That was why we pushed that song so hard, to re-open the case and ask what was going on that night. You probably know the builder did a death-bed confession. He held Brian Jones under the water.

"They did the classic thing--‘drug upped Rolling Stone drowns in his own pool’ and it was buried for decades. Now it’s been proven he was murdered but hardly anyone seems to know that’s what happened.

"So we wanted this record to be as successful as possible, to re-open a discussion about what happened and vindicate his reputation. That’s why we called it Godstar as it’s about amazing and influential dead people. Jimi Hendrix would fit into that category. Jones was considering making the first supergroup with Hendrix--can you imagine what would have happened if it had come to fruition in 1969? It would have made the Stones irrelevant. I hitch-hiked from Yorkshire down to Hyde Park to watch the Stones that year. They were terrible."

After a good friend re-alerted me to Romeo Void's "Never Say Never" I decided to look out their 1982 album Benefactor. It's highly original so far. Roll Eyes

After exploring 1980s new/cold/darkwave from former Yugoslavia I'm since moved on to so-called "Soviet Wave" (Russian synthpop/new wave/whatever you want to call it). This was the first example I found. Forum clearly take their cue from the West but flaunt its conventions--love those wild synth flourishes! From 1985, this is "Lets Call Each Other":

Here's another beauty by Alyans (Альянс, alliance in English). "Na Zare" (At Dawn) dates from 1987. The reverent audience is every bit as fascinating as the band (according to one comment, "Every band member looks like individual artists from different genres and time periods lol". I really love that one guy in the audience acting like the song is his one hold on life. It makes you wonder what all those listeners are doing now...

Having visited the Baltic States a couple of years back, I was intrigued to find this pair of cover versions of two songs I really like, "You Might Need Somebody" (here called Keegi) and "Jump To The Beat" (Meid Kaasa Muusika Viib), recorded in Tallinn in 1981 by Elektra, four Estonian ladies plus a tight band (love that bass!). Lovely stuff.

Here's one from the great movie Absolute Beginners, which we saw at the weekend.

The Style Council made some nice sounds, not least on "Have You Ever Had It Blue", a UK #14 in 1986:

Austrian band Joy "Magic Eyes" (youtube is everybody's friend). Its smash (including in USSR 80s youth) TBT (ditto "Valerie")  is dullfest. I like positivity in "...Eyes", despite the typically flamboyant to the 1000th degree 80s arrangement.

Heard this Phil Collins gem in the restaurant this evening.

Our range cooker needed looking at today and once you turn one of those things off it takes the best part of a day (and night) for it to warm up again!

"Sussudio" is one of my favourites by this most unlikely star:

Was just on another non-music message board. A  post (in the equivalent of our Sandbox) asked for songs with our names in the title.
Only ones I could think of for me was In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, or maybe Dizzy Miss Lizzie.

Someone posted a song for her name, Valerie by Steve Winwood. Wow. I hadn’t heard that song in many years but remembered it fondly back in the 80s. Just gave it a listen - sounds just as great as it did back in the day.

Here's an early Russian all-synthesizer band called Bioconstructor. If its members look familiar, it's because they're in the audience of the Allianz TV performance of "Na Zare", most noticeably their leader, Aleksander Yakovlev, the one enthusiastically singing along.

This is "Teleturizm":

Can't forget Gary Numan. His big moment came and went quite quickly but there have been plenty of interesting albums from him since then until very recently. From 1980's Telekon, this is "I Dream Of Wires":

People diss the 80s with pat generalizations like "bad hair, fake drums, and synths" the same way people deride the 60s as "hey man / peace sign / stoned out". There's always so much beyond the obvious (I mean, I hated the late 70s but have to admit that below the surface, there was great stuff I didn't/couldn't know about in my midwestern isolation...)

Though I'm a 60s die-hard, my punky friends really got me into some great 80s stuff that wasn't necessarily heard:
Let's Active
Game Theory
Zeitgeist (The Reivers)
Green on Red
The Housemartins

'81 thru ''85 was such a rich period, and still so much I continue to find from then; I consider the 80s to be the biggest breath of fresh air since the 60s.

The Birthday Party's Mick Harvey, who shared guitar duties with Rowland S Howard, mans the kit on "Dead Joe", as regular drummer Phill Calvet was unable to nail the rhythm. Later Calvet was ousted from the band entirely, leaving it a quartet with Harvey on drums. "Dead Joe" is the second track on The Birthday Party's 1982 album Junkyard

Still in Australia, this one's on the edge but more 1980s than 1970s. The Melbourne-based nine-piece punk-funk band Use No Hooks have an album out of almost all previously unreleased material and very good it is too!

Their lineup is (to the best of my knowledge) Stuart Grant, Wendy Morrissey, Denise Rosenburg and Marisa Stirpe (vocals), Mick Earls (guitar), Matt Errey and Phil Nichols (keys), André Schuster (bass) and Arne Hanna (drums). The sax on the live tracks comes courtesy of Simon Grounds (with grateful thanks to Mylene at Hoffman for that information). The blurb on the Bandcamp page is most illuminating:
