Sorry to hear about this - the wife and I spent our honeymoon at Big Sur's wonderful Post Ranch Inn three years ago September (unfortunately, a week before Al's concert at the local library). Hope the fires are indeed contained for good, and hope the damage was minimal.

UPDATE: Matt Jardine posted this update on Facebook six hours ago:

Thinking of all of our Big Sur neighbors on pfeiffer ridge who are evacuating & have lost their homes from the wildfires. Very very sad news & my thoughts & prayers are with them. My Dad's ranch, where I grew up, is not out of the woods yet. The fire is very close & is burning on the ridges above his property. Fire crews are working very hard to stop the fire but cannot contain it. Put some good thoughts out there for my pops & other big sur residents please.

I enjoyed Big Sur and the Highway 1 route several years ago when on a road trip with a good CA friend – we stayed a night at Ragged Point, and hiked a short way into the hills to see the coastal redwoods. Also stopped by a number of places referenced in BBs song lyrics (she's a very understanding friend!).

It's a breathtakingly beautiful area, and what we experienced of it was a nice community too. I hope to return someday with the family and revisit some of those places (I have a very understanding family!).

Hope the fire's soon out and that there's minimal damage or harm done.

"My mom went back down to try and help get livestock out of the canyon," Davey writes. "I think she has a friend with a horse trailer coming to rescue the Jardine's two horses," she adds, referring to horses owned by Beach Boy legend and Big Sur resident Al Jardine.

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

Oh. Sorry. Don't wanna be redundant here.

As we speak, the fire is only 5% contained. 200 more homes are still being threatened. It's now about a mile away from the Ventana Inn.

Man, that's a drag. I can't find any new info today. Any word specifically on Al's house?

Ooh. Not good. Pray for rain.

The reports I'm finding don't give news on Al's place, but the news isn't good for the area.  S.F. Chronicle @6:40 am pst, reporting that it's still only 5% contained.  More than 500 firefighters working on it, calling it a "Summer-type fire in December."  A front is coming through, expecting more wind and wind shifts.  A quick moving fire.
Recent info can be found by searching: Pfeiffer Ridge Big Sur - some in the last hour.  By the sound of it, getting more serious, not less.
No cause yet, as the smoke is too thick, except:  "In the driest year on record !  Less than a half-inch of rain since July (normal for fall is several inches).  Over 100 homes without power, PG&E reports.  And now Highway 1 is hard to navigate, but still open... unless the fire crosses to the East side.  They are saying maybe a couple of days to contain.
SPCA is on-hand to help, thank goodness.  This sounds just terrible.  You know the animals in the wild are going left and right.
Thanks for your up-dates Mikie.  I hope I didn't double post anything - redundant isn't that important right now.

Oh, and I can't find the Matt Jardine info on facebook.  Do you have to be on his 'Friends" list to get it?

Been there many times.  There are a lot of trees in the canyon along the main road to pfieiffer beach  but coming up out of the canyon and along the ridges there is that Big Sur/California coast grass and brush, brown even in normal rainfall.  This is the stuff that burned all the way along the coast road and into the forests just a short few years back.  The folks out there have a way of coming together in times like thisi.   My thoughts go out to the residents.

As for the location of Al's house, as many times as I have been to pfieffer beach I am still not sure exactly where he lives.  And I've looked.   Wink   Folks will have to have more info than the name of a road or a landmark. So, odds are the hint left on this thread will be of little value and Al's provacy will be intact.

The Red Barn Studio site is AWOL, has been for a while: I suspect because given the info in the photos and a judicious use of Google Maps satellite view, it didn't take too long to work out where he lived.

From Al's facebook page:

Thank you all for the positive messages and prayers. We are okay for now. Everyone is evacuated but us and a few other souls. We will keep you updated and thanks again for keeping us in your thoughts, it is very much appreciated.

I especially like the map included at this site, which places Red Barn Studios in the middle of a green canyon on the east side of Hwy 1.

Another update from Al.

All of us are still here at the ranch. These pictures were taken as the fire came down off Pfeiffer Ridge. We've heard that three quarters of the fire are now fully contained and hoping it will be fully contained by tonight. We thank the brave firefighters, especially the Big Sur Volunteer Fire Brigade, who have been working night and day to battle this fire and also the Red Cross for providing shelter for some of our neighbors who lost their homes and/or had to evacuate. And thanks again to everyone for your positive messages, we feel blessed to know we have so many friends who care.
