Isn't the lead on "Surf's Up" technically a fly-in?

"Rough"? I like 'em.
I mean, accuracy is important too, but "Oh, geez, a whole bunch of times..." is just the right amount of sass for the liner notes in the next compilation.

Dennis' s vocal on cabinessence is from the 20/20 sessions?! I thought that was from the original SMiLE version...

So were the flown in vocals on 'Look' from the '71 'Surf's Up'?

Quick question: what about the "Water Chant"? Has any possible date been put to that recording? Was it even recorded during the Smile sessions (as apposed to a little after, like "Cool, Cool Water")?

That's dealt with in the Sessionography as well, unless I'm mistaken... hold on [sound of retreating footsteps, and turning of pages, then silence]
[sound of returning footsteps]
Right, got it.
"Cool, Cool Water Chant
(appears as intro to Track 18 on CD 1)
Vocals: Brian, Dennis, Carl, Mike, Al, Bruce
Track, Overdubs & Vocals recorded at Brian Wilson's Bel Air Home Studio, Thursday October 26, 1967, 1:00pm-4:00pm
Additional vocals recorded at Wally Heider Studio 3, Sunday October 29, 1967, times unknown
Engineer: Jim Lockert
2nd Engineer: Bill Halverson
No take slated / Master # 58583
Recorded on 1" 8-track tape"
So, yes: it's a Wild Honey-era recording!!!!

another question: do we know what was recorded 5/18? I thought the tapes we've heard thus far were 5/16 (the GV box set version) and 5/17 ("Part 2, day 2"J) - the "bird noises" version.

The intro to CD1/18 is the 'water' chant, also recorded 10/29/67.

[The sound of more booklet pages turning is heard]
Bicyclerider's question is also answered in the Sessionography. According to that, the first day on LTSDD was May 16th, the 'Part 2 Second Day!!!!!' stuff with bird noises was begun on May 17th, and work *continued* on that track in some way on May 18th.
The May 19th session was then cancelled, but I think that's been known a while, right?

Unless stated otherwise, the studio was Western. Please feel free to add, correct and generally improve. It could use it.
1. Our Prayer (1:06) – recorded 10/4/66 (Columbia)
Nothing from the 20/20 sessions?

Nope; I certainly don't hear the extra vocals. There's a really high F note at the end that gives it away, but it's not anywhere to be heard on the box.

The extra vocals in Child Is Father of the Man, are they contemporary Smile recordings? I thought they were fly ins from 1971.

That last chorus is from an acetate, thus most definitely not fly ins.

Interesting, I see where Carl got the vocal arrangement for the tag of Surf's Up then.

Mike's vocal on Cabin Essence was recorded in '66? I wonder why that part of the "lead" was recorded then but not the verse vocals.
