An album that was released a month ago is more current than an album that was released a year ago.

Come on. Admit the picture I posted above is the most disgusting image of Brian you've ever seen. The Gershwin thing was a very short-lived "HE AN SOPHISTICATED ARTISTS JUST LIKE PET SOUNDS" gimmick they had going for him, right down to his manner of dress and appearance. But before and after, it was mostly "HE AN FUN AND SUN ELDER STATESMEN CALIFORNIA GIRLS GENIUS CALIFORNIA CALIFORNIA FUN AND SUN"

The image you posted was an ad for a single concert. Here are some other concert ad pictures, from before and after the date you selected.

The point is, the photo exists in the first place.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic. I wouldn't say he's grossly misrepresented or anything, just to the extent that it irks me a bit. Brian is about half "California Girls" and half Love You, but the folks who're running the show in his camp would be mortified if the latter was ever let on by him at any point or in any way. They act as if the guy disappeared off the face of the earth in '66 and only reappeared in the late '90s.

"It's all just 'Little Deuce Coupe' to him. I said, 'Don't you realize Brian Wilson is essentially a 20th-century avant-garde pop genius?' And he went, 'Avant-garde? Not the Brian Wilson I know.'"

From same interview/recollection of O'Hagan (and I'm quoting from memory)

"Brian, let's make a record."
"You want to make a record with me? Wow! I'll give you a number one!"
"No, no, no, Brian, you don't have to do that. Let's get some of the old guys in, Hal, Carol, and the wrecking crew and cut the songs you wanna cut."
".......You don't want a number one?"

I don't think even Brian Wilson realises he's a 20th Century Avant-garde genius. He just likes making REALLY FLIPPING GREAT RECORDS and MAKING MONEY. Sometimes the two dovetail nicely. Sometimes they don't.

Wait, what are these quotes from?
When Sean O'Hagan told a magazine about his experiences in trying to make a record with Brian and the beach boys.

It kind of bothers me when he's like "it is strong. it is good" in the Beautiful Dreamer documentary. Anybody else know the part? He's on a couch with Van Dyke Parks. I had to rewind it like 4 times.

Erm, isn't Van Dyke saying that to Brian?

Surely it has occurred to him at some point after Smile that albums work best as a form of artistic expression, and not a collection of pop tunes...? Hasn't it? Judging by his surprised reaction to such an outrageous suggestion, ("WHAT? AN ALBUM THAT ISN'T 12 SONGS MADE FOR THE RADIO? WHAT IS THIS, RUBBER SOUL?") I don't think it's occurred to anybody else either, other than Sean O'Hagan and Van Dyke Parks.

Listening to Gideon Gaye and Your Imagination back-to-back is a nightmare of what-ifs.

Man, I was right - Van Dyke says it first! You can't call Jeff some creep for AGREEING with him.

No, you weren't right! Van Dyke says "This is strong and good."

The slightly different wording of what Jeff says sounds like some sort of praise giving automaton. IT IS STRONG. IT IS GOOD. PRAISE BE TO MASTER. ERROR ERROR>

Yeah, but did it occur to you that perhaps Brian needs this type of reassurance? He is Brian Douglas Wilson, after all...

Ah yes, but as we all know Jeff is the devil incarnate, so he couldn't possibly be doing something so simple as encouraging an insecure friend of 20 or so years in a time of intense pressure.
