It was much more than a "Revolution 9" reference -- John Lennon had a thing about the number 9:
- Revolution 9, of course
- The One After 909
- "Love Me Do"'s catalog number was R4949
- Birthday he and his son Sean shared: October 9
- It was December 9 in his motherland when he died.
- There are 9 days between George Harrison's month/day of death and John Lennon's.

More info at http://triumphpc.com/mersey-beat/beatles/number-nine.shtml.

That's fine, but...considering there are two conflicting stories, how do we know which one is closer to the truth??

I suppose we don't, I just tend to trust Desper's recollection since we know that he was there in the studio with them on that album, and the same can't be said for Reiley.

And yes this is all in the Carlin book as well.

The 1967 Surf's Up would be an obvious choice for first single from the album. Release it to radio in October and generate interest in the forthcoming album.

But it's not even an actual SMiLE session!

Also, I think they've already worked out what the singles are...and "Surf's Up" (who knows which version?) shows up as a B-side.

I wonder if that is the TSS disk 1 version of Surf's Up in the background.

It certainly has the Brian Wilson vocal with the backing track, but a little obscured by the VDP narration to give it away completely. Very tantalizing!

That Heroes also sounds a bit different from the "Tongal" version.  Perhaps this is the "stereo mix" on disc 1?

"Smile was his big break"

o. An unreleased album was his big break? The end results of those sessions, Smiley Smile, which can't have sold more than seventeen copies back in the day, was his big break? wat.

Also, if this is indeed the TSS "Surf's Up" on disc 1, we can hear:

Predicted Brian piano demo vocal over backing track
Brian's "Columnated ruins domino" pasted in both sections
"Bygone"s are intact

Although the "Heroes And Villains" that plays first isn't the disc 1 version that we've heard, so maybe we're hearing a fan mix. Maybe not. The stretched "brother John" doesn't sound so well done.

Working with Brian Wilson, arguably the biggest thing in pop music at that time, doesn't count? I think it cemented him in the LA scene as a major player, which makes a lot of sense seeing as he went on to get a ridiculously ambitious album released on Warner Brothers and into a high level job at that label. Park's career started in earnest after that.

I Believe it is a fan-mix, but who knows? It COULD be TSS, but why would the put it in a Van Dyke interview?! Maybe a Brian interview, VDP isn't really that involved...

Surf's Up was in stereo in that and the stereo version is only on vinyl. Sounded to clear to be vinyl so maybe it is indeed a fanmix or a rough version given to the radio company to use.

Though I didn't think it was that bad really.

If Van Dyke Parks got more street cred from working with Smile it should have been duly balanced with scorn for abandoning the project like a stuck up college intellectual dork at the playful ribbing of class clown Mike Love. If V Dyke was just like Har har Mike whatever you say pal...   HISTORY MIGHT BE VERY DIFFERENT. Of course if we're going to break down the net of causes we could say well if Mike didn't give V Dyke a hard time... etc. But, VDP did walk out. I think he's had his tail between his legs till 2004 over it and he still knows all too well that Smile never got to be what it was meant to be [a phrase VDP would enjoy saying] even though Brian's Smile did come out in 2004. He said it seemed much "bigger" back then - that's the ambition, the shared vision to complete the project in the unified vision of it. Once Van Dyke Parks left, it became a Brian Wilson project and lost the sober direction VDP could bring to matters. Endless takes of what... Dada?

No matter what is being discussed there is always someone in here bitching about how they don't find it interesting. Too much smile, not enough smile, blah blah blah.
