Artwork and complete tracklists are also unveiled for what Rolling Stone magazine recently called “the most famous unfinished album in rock & roll history.”
 
In numerous sessions between the spring of 1966 and the summer of 1967, The Beach Boys recorded a bounty of songs and drafts for an album, SMiLE, that was intended to follow the band’s 1966 masterpiece, Pet Sounds.  The master tapes were ultimately shelved, and The Beach Boys’ SMiLE has never been released.  Drawn from the original masters, The SMiLE Sessions presents an in-depth overview of The Beach Boys' recording sessions for the enigmatic album, which has achieved legendary, mythical status for music fans around the world.

 
The SMiLE Sessions’ 2CD lift-top box, double vinyl LP, digital album, and iTunes LP formats feature an approximation of what was intended to be the completed SMiLE album, compiled from The Beach Boys’ original session masters. Additional session highlights and bonus tracks are also included, including demos and stereo mixes.

An expanded, boxed edition of The SMiLE Sessions will also be released physically and digitally, featuring the main SMiLE album tracks, plus four CDs of additional audio from the legendary sessions, a double vinyl LP set, and two 7” vinyl singles.  The deluxe box will also contain a 60-page hardbound book with rare and previously unseen photos and memorabilia from The Beach Boys’ archive and newly-written essays by Beach Boys Al Jardine, Mike Love, Brian Wilson, and Bruce Johnston, as well as by Beach Boys historian and author Domenic Priore and many other inner-circle participants.

The Beach Boys are embracing technology and crowdsourcing to produce the first official music videos for "Good Vibrations" and "Heroes And Villains" by partnering with Tongal, the leading creative social platform.  In Tongal’s first-ever music video initiative, fans can now collaborate to create the official music videos, as the project begins today (August 30) on Tongal.com, and consists of two phases - a concept phase and a video phase.  The concept phase calls for fans to conceptualize the music video for “Heroes and Villains” or “Good Vibrations” in 250 characters or less. In the video phase, Tongal users can select one of the five winning concepts from phase one and produce a music video based on it.  The video can be animated or live-action, trippy or classic – it can be whatever the fans want, as long as it’s their own.  Cash prizes and special items, including an autographed custom Hobie longboard, will be awarded to Tongal users for the top submissions.

 The SMiLE Sessions box set will include details about Operation Smile, an international medical charity organization with a presence in more than 60 countries dedicated to healing children's smiles. Since 1982, Operation Smile - through the help of generous supporters and medical volunteers - has provided free surgeries worldwide for children born with facial deformities such as cleft lips and cleft palates. The best efforts have been taken by The Beach Boys, the producers, and Capitol/EMI to present the SMiLE album sessions’ most vital and fascinating elements.  However, there will no doubt be some debate amongst Beach Boys fans around the world who, during the past four decades, have become familiar with a variety of widely-traded bootlegged bits and pieces from the sessions.  As recently explained by the Detroit Metro Times, “No album, released or not, has generated a more personal relationship with its audience, since no two people can ever agree on its content and purpose.”


Beginning with “Good Vibrations,” The Beach Boys’ best-selling record in a long string of hits, Brian Wilson had begun to construct songs in a modular form, crafting individual sections that would later be edited together to form a coherent whole.  In several intense bursts of creative energy, Wilson, drawing on the talents of the finest studio musicians in Los Angeles and utilizing the best studio facilities available on any given day, laid down dozens of musical fragments, all designed to fit together in any number of possible combinations.  No one had done this before in pop music, and his next endeavor would be an album-length version of this unique and luxurious songwriting parlance: SMiLE.


In 1965, Brian Wilson met an up-and-coming session keyboard player and songwriter, Van Dyke Parks. Noticing Parks' conversational eloquence, Wilson felt that he could help to volley The Beach Boys’ songwriting into the wave of broader-messaged and socially-conscious rock 'n' roll that would come to define the '60s.  They were soon collaborating on keynote songs for SMiLE, including “Heroes And Villains,” the band’s follow-up single to “Good Vibrations.”  Wilson and Parks would also co-write “Surf's Up,” “Vega-Tables,” “Cabin Essence,” “Do You Like Worms,” “Wonderful,” “Wind Chimes,” and other pieces of the SMiLE tapestry.  Parks also introduced Frank Holmes to create album sleeve art and a booklet interpreting the album’s James Joyce-mode lyrics.

The reason SMiLE did not see a release in 1967 had more to do with back room business that obscured the creative side of the program than anything else.  In late 1966, The Beach Boys formed Brother Records, initially to produce outside artists.  Soon, however, The Beach Boys would become embroiled in a court action with Capitol Records with the goal to become the top-selling artists on their self-owned, independent label.  The group withheld “Heroes And Villains” and announced they would instead release “Vega-Tables” – recorded with the band’s own money in April of '67 – on Brother Records.  By July of 1967, Capitol Records and The Beach Boys had come to terms, with Capitol agreeing to distribute the band’s Brother Records, and it was agreed that SMiLE was no longer to be the band’s next album.

The Beach Boys and Capitol/EMI will celebrate the band’s 50th Anniversary in 2012.  Plans for commemorative releases and other anniversary activities will be announced.

Unless I'm mistaken several UK residents have posted that they have preordered the 5 disc boxset off amazon.com. Might I humbly suggest you DON'T DO THIS IF YOU WANT THE BOXSET AT THE BEGINNING OF NOVEMBER!!!! Any goods that exceed the value of £18 coming into the UK will be subject to import tax. In short, this means that Her Majesty's Customs will hold onto your boxset for 2-3 weeks before releasing it and you will then have to pay a fee of roughly 16 pounds to your postal depot before they will sign it over to you. If you think I'm talking out of my backside here, please google United Kingdom Customs and Shipping Laws. I might also add I discovered this policy the hard way. Wait until it becomes available on amazon.co.uk then preorder from there. Trust me on this.

I tried this last night when i first was reading the thread after a wknd away recording, coming back and finding 40+pages had appeared from my 3 days absence

I know there was a YouTube link but that's been either taken down or made inaccessible to UK folks (and I assume other Europeans).

Thank Christ - looks like special editions will focus on goodies like Ts and surf boards (yeah, because SMiLE's a surf music album, right) rather than bonus tracks… though I wonder what iTunes will offer – virtual T-shirts are no good for fat boys like me!

i don't know if anyone noticed, but amazon took down the promo video on the Beach Boys Amazon Page....

It's because the whole thing was a fake, cooked up by some internet prankster and all the gullible dreamers fell for it. This boxset is never coming out, not with all the troubles beset upon it. If you think it is I have a bridge I want to sell you. AGD is living in a fool's parad............. AGGGHHHH!! I've been possessed by Phil Cohen!! Help me! Anyone know a good exorcist? LOL I really think it's funny anyone could think it's fake, even Phil, Capitol announced it, and they released a TRACKLIST! How could you doubt it?

Trust me, some folk on the Hoff, and on the Bloo, seriously thought the box set pic was faked.

It would be fun to confront them directly with a question about Amazon accepting payments for pre-orders on the box set, unless they might think someone spoofed the entire Amazon website, online accounting and payment structure, and distribution network in order to mess with a group of Beach Boys fans.

Seriously though, what answers if any do they give for Amazon taking money from people for this box set if it's nothing but a ruse of some kind, in their opinions?

Brian's site has the time stamps for the tracks.

It has Good Vibrations at 4:13. I assume that means they brought the 'hummm bee dow" section into the song ala BWPS.

9. Heroes And Villains: Mission Pak [Heroes And Villains Session: 1/3/67]

It does tie in to other Smile themes considering the Mission Pak sales pitch involved 'sending California to the rest of the country'. Or it could tie in that Mission Pak did most of their business at Christmas, with people sending Mission Pak gift boxes of fresh fruit as Christmas gifts. Or maybe the clue is in finding a Mission Pak jingle of some kind, or tying that into the Christmas season somehow.

Probably the most intriguing song title on that list so far...

I wondered about this track earlier, (post #5171 of this thread) but the thread is moving so fast I don't think many people saw it AND I meant to reply to your post to begin with!

Could Mission Pak be the vocal track we now know as "Soul Made Beautiful"?

On the Heroes And Villains Sessions Parts 1 & 2 CD (Wilson Records 1001), when they are rehearsing this, at about the 4:00 mark, Brian says (I think) "Come on you guys, pull through! Happy Happy Happy Mission Pak singing sound!

I was hoping it wouldn't get lost in the shuffle as well! Naturally we'll know more when we hear the track on the box, but until then it's fun to add a backstory to it.

One thing I have to do is find an actual Mission Pak jingle dating from 1966 - quite a tall order and in a preliminary scan of the usual sources I've come up empty. I posted in another  (lost and/or buried post a few pages back) reply here how the Mission Pak jingle Brian references was ubiquitous in and around Southern California for decades, as familiar to residents there as any famous advertising jingle that gets stuck in our heads years after hearing it.

It was almost a tradition the way it would appear for people to hear that jingle endlessly from Thanksgiving to Christmas, and if the Beach Boys were cutting tracks a week or two after Christmas 1966 the jingle would be fresh in their minds from that year, no doubt. Folks are posting online the full lyrics to this song/jingle, decades after it stopped airing on TV and radio, that's how memorable it is.

So whether the Heroes "Mission Pak" session references a specific vocal style, or the actual comment from Brian on the session tape, or something like Christmas bells or chimes that may have been on the jingle as well for that "holiday" spirit sound, I'd love to hear the actual jingle and hope to find one copy soon, if possible.

A lot of people keep mentioning a possible Best Buy exclusive. What is this all about? The last time i bought an album at Best Buy was in 1999 so i am out of the loop. Best Buy specifically has been known to have exclusive deals, as in offering things that are not available anywhere else? WTF. Some people (and i'm not questioning this, just confirming) think an entire bonus disc could maybe be available only through Best Buy? And stuff like shirts?? Pardon?

They have thrown in t-shirts with the purchase of recent packages from Dylan and Clapton, among many others.  They also occasionally sell "Best Buy exclusive" CD releases that contain 1 to 3 bonus tracks not on the standard issue everyone else sells.

It's true that Best Buy has had exclusive material as bonus discs.  Sometimes full concert DVDs not available anywhere else.  Always limited quantities.  Check out how many tracks some of these bonus discs had that I found online (or own):
