Been a tough 23 years, huh?
Just on the BW front. It's just the voice is SOOOO not good (in a bad way, not not good like Randy Newman which IS actually good) and the music seems really indie-popped out (also, obviously, not good) that I don't really even hear ANY BW element that I recognize or think sounds good. In my mind I picture the band going in, recording some mid-sixties-style-yet-slightly-modern sounding tracks, working up some backing vocals and then Melinda carts BW in and props him in front of a music stand while the engineers cringe knowingly to one another and whisper "we'll fix it in the mix" while Jeff jots down all the places he's going to have to cover for BW's leads with his own double-tracked co-lead. And that's the last FOUR albums (not including TLOS which BW supposedly had a hand in writing at least) Plus, why'd it have to be Disney!? Why not Spector or Phil Collins or ANYbody that Brian has actually expressed some liking towards? I mean, I know why it had to be Disney, but come on man!

UUGGHH. I've never been a Disney fan, but this stuff is even worse than I imagined. I think, when it comes right down to it, the only BW solo record I can stand is BW '88. Year after year I keep looking forward to the next new album, and each time it feels less and less like something BW had any hand in. The quirkiness seems forced but so does the BW-like music. Oh hell, I'm sure I'll buy it 'cos I love the man, but just like everything from Sweet Insanity on, it's gonna sit on the shelf filling in its place in the complete recorded works of BW area, with only a couple trips to the cd player. But if you like it, this is awesome news and you must be psyched!

I definitely loved Nirvana in the early nineties until he killed himself (or whatever) but to compare them to the BB is way out there, man. First of all, the only one of Nirvana's recordings that doesn't sound painfully dated is Bleach, and maybe some of the singles stuff from whatever that comp was called. I mean DATED. Bad, super selfconcious art rock like In Utero ,and really everything from that Jesus Lizard single on, sound like a bad time to me. And if you can sit through the horrible production on Nevermind and compare that to ANY brian-produced BB album (including Love You) then, my friend, we live in strange times indeed. Sounds like you are more into the myth of Kurt Cobain, whatever that has turned into, than the deliberately provocative twenty-something guy who would complain about Rolling Stone magazine, in a Rolling Stone article, with HIM on the cover! A confused guy, for sure, with some good songs but neither the brains nor the foresight to see past himself and his 'problems' . I've known a lot of guys like that, and there was nothing cool about their flame-out. Anyway, Beach Boys rule!

So I just got my Mojo 60s in the mail, and for all the talk about Mike's mystery sharp note in the Cabinessence tag, I don't think I've heard anyone mention that it's missing Carl's second lead vocal overdub. I wonder what that's all about. (Maybe that's Linett's compromise for post-mid-67 touch-ups.. we only get half of them ) Carl's 'second lead vocal overdub' was actually an electronic effect, not an actual doubled-lead, and was very crappy sounding to boot. Wisely it has been removed...

Yea Yea. Zany. As in: beer addicts, and watching the Sommermärchen of the Frauenfußball in Public Viewing spots all day long. I know what Germans are like.
Look like you're quite an expert with Umlauts and extra character "ß" and the Public Viewing thing. Do you live here? Replace "beer addicts" with "beer gardens" and I'm 100% with you! I wrote 'addicts' specifically to draw a reply from you. It worked! I am Dutch but was raised with German TV (due to my Dad's preferences). So I know John Wayne's voice only in German: 'Zieh' Deine Knarre Und Schieß', Du Hurensohn!' German Beer Gardens are great... and I'll do a weekend of Berlin later this year. So would you agree about the cooled off football enemyship? And one several German John Wayne voices is better that the original I think! Oh yes, in soccer we're not that inimical any more. Remeber when Rijkaard spit Völler in the face? I think in the years '88-'92 it was at its worst. Bu IMHO, between 1974 and 1988 there wasn't really some feud going on. Most of that time the Germans were a lot better, and only in 1988 Holland managed to get onto the same level, and beat them in the EC. Now, that was an evening....... BORING....

Sir, don't forget you are living in a world where people are taught property rights do not matter and that everyone should somehow benefit from someone else's work without lifting a finger and that...well, you get the idea.
Where is this taught, exactly? School, TV, every single politician ever.

Ahh yes, independence day. The day we (and by we I mean a few dozen white politicians who have all been dead for hundreds of years) declared independence from mean old Britain (meaning some long dead white politicians) so that everyone (meaning white land-owners) could be free to express themselves however they saw fit (meaning making fun of Bruce Johnston by giving him a Hitler head). I love that day!
How dare you call me a white land-owner, I'm actually a black sheep-farmer Damn! I guess you somehow slipped through the cracks!

I judge by what you do. You may be a terrific person and I truly hope that you are. This was poor taste and the only thing that I am judging. You think Bruce would appreciate what you did? Also, today is Independence Day here in the U.S.. We, as well as Great Britain paid a huge price in lives lost or wounded fighting against what Hitler stood for, not to mention all who died in the concentration camps. I guess some of us see Hitler as heinous and not a comic character.

Why is it that everyone feels they deserve to get things for free?
Why does Mojo get to profit from someone else's creativity is, I think, a question is a lot harder to find a convincing answer for. Hmm. Let's see, here'e three: They've invested the time and $$ to run their business, and they're paying for the right to use that creativity; They're the ones that put out this issue that includes the , somewhat, free 45. They pay people to write the articles in their mag( good or bad) Why do people feel they deserve to sponge off the people that have spent the $$ to buy the mag? ( some people don't mind sharing, obviously) I'll be glad to provide you my snail address, if you'll send me everything you own, that I desire to have. Plese make a list of everything you have, so I'll know what to ask for. Sir, don't forget you are living in a world where people are taught property rights do not matter and that everyone should somehow benefit from someone else's work without lifting a finger and that...well, you get the idea. Garbage in garbage out.

It definitely seems like a stop-gap album rushed out before the 'real' one could be finished and, along with the extremely casual atmosphere, could easily have been intended as the Party followup. Since I'm not over at Andrew's site investigating this I can't say for sure (dates are probably off), but maybe the Heider sessions, beyond being re-records of the Hawaii material, could've been intended as the more familiar parts (Surfer Girl, Rhonda) of that second Party album that eventually became SS. Either way, it seems clear that the BB were still intending to release SMiLe, or some other 'bigger' album, and that SS was just a contract thing (a great stoned-soul contract thing, but still). 67 must have been a crazy frickin' year for those guys!

The one time I spoke to him after a show in Seattle in 99 or 2000 he was pretty short with me. I asked him why he wasn't writing the liner notes for the Brothers years re-releases and he said "ask Capitol" and turned and walked away. But Jeff Foskett jumped right in and saved the day by talking to me and my pal for a good half hour before dinner and asking what we loved about the show and what songs we'd have liked to hear (Please Let Me Wonder, I said) etc. But yeah, Leaf seemed like a real Dick to me.

It's a pity that if one wants the 4 CDs you also have to have the LPs. I don't want the LPs because I don't have a record player,
Dear sir, Buy a record player. Do you enjoy listening to music with amazing fidelity and wonderful dynamic range? Buy a record player. If only for the aesthetics of holding a big slab-o-vinyl with large artwork to peruse you should have one. They don't cost much and the format has been around for, like, a hundred years unlike whatever crummy format you must have, and seems unlikely to go away anytime soon. Seriously, get one.

My understanding is the original byrds line-up, with the exception of Jim and Gene (Clark), were terrible live, and it wasn't until gene parsons and clarence white joined that their live shows became listenable. Check out the first record of Untitled to hear that line-up really rock.

I'm pretty sure with this Mojo magazine coming June 15th, the news is going to start rolling out soon after that
Has this not been the worst wait ever
It was worse in 96 or 97 or whenever when I read in Rolling Stone that the box was coming out (with a street date) and then...nothing. at least now there are a few dribs and drabs to grab onto.
