VD is a very advanced musician.  Song Cycle and much of his catalog likely sails over the heads of many BW fans....As Bri himself stated, "I have met my match in this music man".

Well he was a crazy guy....
3  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian Wilson's genealogy? on: November 08, 2017, 03:26:21 PM
This is kinda like how when people claim to be reincarnated, they were formerly only famous people.  What a list of famous people!  He's related to Lizzie Borden, George Romney, George Bush and Sarah Palin, as well as Robert E. Lee.  No wonder he was hanging out at Bush's convention!  Who knew he was such a genealogical Republican?  Well if you believe this site....not sure I do, thing appears to be like, "well, we are all related since we were descended from Adam" as the old saw goes....
4  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Paley Sessions Discussion Thread on: November 07, 2017, 04:05:33 PM
Seeing Brian in this kind of condition may have had something to do why Carl was not so enthused about a new Brian-produced Beach Boy record. He may have felt that Brian just wasn't up to it. Brian himself talks about how scared he was. I do think that working with the Beach Boys brings up a lot of old issues for Brian

I think it was far more complicated than that, as far as Carl-Brian was concerned.

Brian presented *more than album's worth* of material to the group in 1994/95. He had essentially pre-recorded more than an album with Andy Paley. He had proved he was up to it, especially with Paley and Was there to help.

We also have that Cindy Lee Berryhill report of Brian and the band's session for one (or both?) of the songs they recorded together, and Brian seemed to have his wits about him there as well (and again, if Carl had any misgivings, they had not one but TWO producers there to help), with the only potential issue coming up during that first-hand encounter being Mike being kind of a d**khead during the session (Brian was on the ball enough to actually razz Mike during session).

The problem with anybody stepping into the Paley Sessions situation and saying Brian wasn't up to it is that:

A) Brian had produced such a quantity of material already
B) They had co-producers working on it with them
C) NOBODY, including Carl, was offering *an alternative* as far as an album project to work on. Carl nor Mike nor anybody else had a huge bag of songs ready to record.

It's pretty clear that Carl and Bruce didn't think a lot of the Paley material was that great. Mike seemed pretty ambivalent about it. Al in his only comments I've seen has described liking the material (there's little doubt in my mind that Al would have gladly sang backups on 20 Paley songs, no problem).

So on Carl's end, "the material sucks" is probably closer to something that sounds plausible than "Brian's not up to it."

If Carl had walked into the 1986 Gary Usher sessions, then *maybe* he could have argued "Brian's not up to it."

But in 1995, Brian had *two* solo albums already in the pipeline, and arguably TWO albums worth of material in the can recorded with Andy Paley.

I go with the material sucked theory as for Carl's disinterest.....Brian and many of his fans apparently lost their ability regarding critical judgment when it came to his nineties, ahem, "work"......

Twitter beefs and swipes are the territory of "stars" like Nicki Minaj and B-list rappers, not musicians of the caliber of a Van Dyke Parks. What's next, a "diss track" coming from Van Dyke?  Cheesy

Aren't twitter beefs usually two-sided, though? I don't think anyone usually responds to Van Dyke. It's not like Brian gets on Twitter and starts returning the barbs.
Brian has too much class to respond back, unlike a certain hipster douchebag.  Can you imagine it though, if Brian actually went on Twitter and just unloaded on those that have either f***ed him over or disrespected him for no reason?  Will never happen, obviously, but man if anybody has the right to unload, it's Brian. He's earned it.

Brian is not articulate enough to respond to any barbs and his interests likely lie elsewhere, as in what he is having for his next meal....

Turtle Soup, the latest version.  Those guys really sang their asses off and also were a pretty good band.  I don't know why they don't get more credit than they do....maybe the Flo and Eddie "comedy" act hurt their credibility in the long run....
7  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: RIP Tom Petty 1950-2017 on: November 03, 2017, 02:41:09 PM
Tom Petty also had one of my favorite quotes/anecdotes about Brian (I pulled this from old thread, so I can't vouch for the source of it's an exact quote):

"I met Brian in a restaurant in LA recently. Thought he was the perfect gentleman, right up until he buttered his head and put it between two slices of bread."

I never really liked that quote....

New Father John Misty album on the way. I continue to be uncertain as to my own feelings about him: so talented, yet I can't really get into the comedy schtick (although he occasionally does crack me up).

Congrats to Misty for becoming a new father....

Everybody loved the Fat Man....funny, I was listening to Elvis Radio on Sirius the day before Fats died, and they played an old clip of Elvis introducing himself at a concert appearance at the International Hotel (think that is right? anyway a Vegas hotel) to the audience as "hello, I'm Fats Domino", which received some laughter.  I figured perhaps Fats was in the audience....kinda eerie to hear the next day that he had passed on....I think "Walkin' to New Orleans" was my favorite....

Did Brian write the ding, the dang, both or neither?  One of his deeper songs for sure....

I do prefer SMiLE but it was the case of a blind squirrel (VDP) miraculously finding a nut against all odds.

Who was the nut?
16  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Touring Lineup 1971/1972-1974 on: November 03, 2017, 02:18:10 PM
Comment was made that CBS suggested they "toughen up the live sound".  Quite amusing, a bit like MGM exhorting the Osmonds to toughen up their live sound.  This ain't Metallica we're dealing with!  Exactly how that would have increased record sales?  Well, obviously it didn't....

I think Jeff's falsetto is pretty weak...serviceable, but still pretty weak.

Hush puppies
Smush puppies...

The relevant thing here is that all sorts of tricks have to be resorted to in attempts to make Brian's vocals sound half-way decent.  Sometimes they do just about sound half-way decent, but not much more than that....

Lots of folks don't like the "phoniness" aspect of the BBs career, the studio over-production, the reliance on recording tricks.  While a big fan, I do understand this viewpoint and can sympathize with it.  I think in the long run it has contributed to the group perhaps not being taken as seriously as they should be.....

Time for Brian to gracefully bow out of concert performing....This is starting to get embarrassing.....
24  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: A Response to a Request For a Positive Post...My Top 10 Beach Boys Observations on: October 18, 2017, 08:33:26 AM
I think the idea of attempting to "convert" someone to your musical tastes is goofy.  Let folks have their own likes and dislikes.  Unless you are getting paid to do it, it is a waste of time.  Probably a waste of time anyway...

As for appreciating the Boys' full catalog, well, you can appreciate some of it but if you are honest you have to depreciate a sizeable amount of it also....largely running on vapors after Holland....
25  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: was sunshine pop a musical dead end? on: October 16, 2017, 03:11:41 PM
Yup, sunshine pop was a musical dead end, kinda like the blues was.  Or in fact anything.  In the long run, as the "great" economist Keynes said, we are all dead....
