Neither is better, both just kinda mediocre.....
52  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Anniversary editions for the less revered albums on: September 01, 2017, 02:18:48 PM
50th anniversary editions, not 40th....

I think past 15 Big Ones discography wise, maybe the latter stuff in expanded form will only see the light of day with the digital only releases.  Even CATP might be a stretch for a physical re-release in anniversary form....
53  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Rolling Stone: The Salvation of Brian Wilson on: September 01, 2017, 02:15:43 PM
I wish Brian was in better physical condition.  Really, half the people on this thread have him "rounding third" as if death is very imminent but I don't believe that it need be.  With his financial resources he should be able to clean up his diet and alleviate many of his physical maladies through physical training.  The number of centenarians is going up all the time, even with his prior health and lifestyle issues, he could perhaps make it to a productive 90 years or more.....I'm certainly hoping that will happen!
54  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: A new Beach Boys article. on: August 20, 2017, 01:04:16 PM
Brian invented mope rock.  It surely hurt the bands overall popularity in the long run....
55  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Dennis Wilson's songwriting: do his songs sound \ on: August 18, 2017, 11:09:32 AM
I don't think Denny's songs sound incomplete at all.  Simple sometimes, but let's face it most popular music is kinda simple.  I do agree that one song about white punks play tonight really goes nowhere, but where in the hell does ding dang go exactly except straight to hell.  Oh, and Be Still, it really doesn't go anywhere and I've never quite understood why it is liked that much apparently.  To jazz it up a bit, I would always change the lyrics to "you know, you know you are.....be still and smoke a cigar".  At least in my own mind!
56  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Did Al Jardine die in 1965 only to be replaced by a lookalike ? on: August 18, 2017, 11:05:03 AM
Maybe the real question is did Brian die during the Smile sessions, hence it's curious incompletion.....

So what??
58  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Midnight's Another Day - Going Home - Southern California on: August 17, 2017, 03:54:51 PM
I like MAD alright, but it does sound like an Elton John tune.  Also a little too dark to be considered "enjoyable".  Going Home I just consider a pretty duff track, the background vocals sound totally cheesy, I would like to have turned out the light on THEM.  I like Southern California quite a bit, though it does sound a bit demo-ish.  Thought that about much of the album in fact, along with GIOMH.  The recitations by Bri were mostly painful, though I did enjoy some of the backing music to them.

Overall I have ok thoughts about the album, as I got it at an FYI for $3.99 and it was worth every penny!

There is an autographed photo of Gina or Deanna Martin on the wall of the Cracker Barrel restaurant in Branson MO.  Wonder if that meant she played there in town, that is usually the custom....I saw Mickey Gilley eating breakfast in there one time but he was very low key, had his head down and was wearing a baseball cap.

Think I heard he was interred in his hometown of Delight Arkansas.....I was wondering if that would happen.  Kinda neat he chose to go back home at the end of the day....

I would imagine that he did.....why not?
62  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: The Beach Boys Live At Paramount NYC 11/26/1993 Unplugged Tour on: August 08, 2017, 12:14:02 PM
They just showed the Knebworth concert locally on PBS last night.  I had not seen it before, but really didn't care much for it.  Have just seen those same songs live so much I felt like I knew exactly how they were going to sing each line so it was not of much interest to me....They actually sounded good (I know it was doctored a lot) though...FWIW...still some interest in the band I guess....but that concert is starting to "look" very ancient....

Fairly recent novel beatlebone in which John Lennon turns Brian Wilson into a dog...despite this, it is not very good, passable though....

65  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: I'm Wondering If This Was An Intentional Joke by Brian? on: July 30, 2017, 01:23:55 PM
Well he wouldn't have been a professional ballplayer, didn't he hit something like .167 and quit the team in high school?
66  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: I Went To Sleep on: July 30, 2017, 01:22:37 PM
A pretty little tune.  Overall, a minor addition to the canon....perhaps subconsciously reveals the impending bedroom years....
67  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why has the song \ on: July 22, 2017, 01:18:51 PM
Now I know this song might not be popular with quite a few around here, but I gotta ask why the song "Almost Summer" by Celebration has not really kept a level of popularity in line with it's chart placing, which I'm pretty sure was number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Are ya really that impressed with a number 28 chart placing?  Not exactly a whopper of a hit, you know....I listen to some of those old Casey Kasem and other countdown shows on the satellite and am often surprised by how many of those lower placed songs I have never heard of before and I was listening to top forty back then!
68  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Summer of Love - 'Til I Die on: July 22, 2017, 01:12:33 PM
I'm impressed that anyone on this board actually bought SIP.  It, along with Still Cruisin' and Stars and Stripes were the first "new" BBs albums that I actually never even considered buying.  Still though I would like to see an official release of all the eighties and nineties singles and best album tracks on a retrospective album, yes, even Problem Child, Crocodile Rock, Rock and Roll to the Rescue...be nice to have these all together in one place.  And if you wanted to clear a room, it would be fairly easy to do so..... Cheesy

Did see the Boys after SIP in concert and they did nice versions of Walking in the Sand and Hot Fun.  I only heard the latter on the radio a very few times but I thought it was a good remake.  Apparently the piano intro for Sail On Sailor was an homage to Hot Fun or else just a direct ripoff.....
69  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: When did the BB's begin to be thought of as a \ on: July 22, 2017, 01:04:30 PM
I'd say the release of the  singles of Do It Again (retro in theme), then  Bluebirds, I Can Hear Music and Cotton Fields (trio of golden oldies) pretty well marked them as becoming a nostalgia act.  They rebounded nicely with their single releases from Sunflower and Surfs Up, but by then weren't taken seriously as a singles act.  And much as I liked some of those singles, they never did seem like potential hits to me.  Just really good records that didn't seem to fit in with the commercial sounds you were hearing on the radio at that time.  Then to get back to the top forty again, they hit with of all things, Surfin' USA again (an oldie), Rock and Roll Music (an oldie) and It's Okay (retro theme).

So uh, gee if they were viewed as an oldies nostalgia act on the radio, there are several singles releases to show perhaps why they obtained that image.  And of course the group name itself reeked of nostalgia after a certain point in time....

Starting to think it may be Wild Honey!  Some on here are attempting to turn it into another Pet Sounds, while others think it is kind of a slight, ho hum effort, competent but hardly great....
71  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: \ on: July 15, 2017, 12:05:43 PM
I see the set has debuted at 145 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart. Not a bad showing at all for a set like this. And, only 3 spaces lower than 50 Big Ones at 142.

Wow, that is really disappointing, I thought the showing on the Amazon charts would translate to a much higher position for SST on the Billboard charts.  It got pretty good pre-release publicity too!  Wonder if the "1967" in the title may have worked against it?  I really thought the cover was a bit bland also...I was perusing the previous Billboard and noticed several Beatles albums and even the last Glenn Campbell album charting very high on the charts, so it is not performing so well against some of its contemporaries....

Mike: So its gonna be about this girl in a bikini visiting all the old surf hangouts in a Corvette!

Brian: Err...I think they are  laying out the lunch buffet in the next room.

I think we can all agree Brian would be highly interested in the lunch buffet, just look at him!

No interest in this old stuff....group needs to get together with Brian and record some new material!
74  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: “Pisces Brothers” makes soundtrack appearance on: July 12, 2017, 02:16:52 PM
Well, Harrison appeared to be a pretty big Beach Boys fan, I remember seeing him listing some of their songs as personal faves in some listing in a mag article, probably an old NME or Melody Maker.  Also don't know for sure if Harrison participated or not off the top of my head, but there is the little ditty "Happy Birthday Mike Love" sung by Beatles in India that would suggest at least a bit of fondness for him, though we really don't know for sure.  In any case, it does not seem to indicate any antipathy toward him...

Having spent time together in India, it would seem a bit odd if they did not interact in a friendly manner during that time.

As far as getting worked up about the extra S on the end of Brother, whatever.   Mike haters say the darnedest things but after awhile you come to accept their pathology and laugh about it.  I think it was only meant to indicate that they both shared the same astrological sign and both had a similar commitment to Indian based spirituality, not trying to indicate that they were truly brothers, duh, or some sort of closer relationship than that.

I really think that a finished Lei'd In Hawaii album as presented on Sunshine Tomorrow had a good chance of being a hit and in that event given them some much-needed breathing room with Capitol.  Obviously things went differently and I'm grateful for the music they recorded for Wild Honey/Friends and 20/20, but with a hit live album in '67 you might have seen more realized versions of those albums and Brian sticking around longer.

I would have loved to see Lei'd in Hawaii released back then, but the overdubbed audience would have just ruined it for me IMO. It's the reason that I really don't like the original Party! album, but I adore the "uncovered" mix. I'm here to listen to the band play, not to hear clapping and screaming girls! Wink

I'm guessing because none of the tracks (save the two from Michigan '66) would have actually been "live" I think the audience overdubbing would have been more subdued, at least more than the original live album from '64 (which was made up of mostly real live recordings with real screams).  I mean, the entire reason why the live recordings from the Hawaii shows were deemed unusable (I think) is because there was too much screaming and interjections from the audience.  During one of the performances of God Only Knows, some girl is screaming Carl's name and Brian yells "HE'S SINGING, COOL IT!".

But who knows, maybe they would have hired hundreds of girls to scream at the Hollywood Bowl for half an hour with a tape recorder running.  I'm not sure how the overdubbing would have worked.

I have never heard offered the excuse before that the reason Lei'd wasn't released was because of excessive positive audience response (screams, etc).  However I have read that reasons proffered were a sub-par performance by Brian (probably not to be unexpected given his lack of recent live performance experience) or some sort of snafu with the live recordings which made the majority of them unusable.
