myKe luHv was born not only looking goofy, but years older than he really was. I remember seeing him on stage looking ancient compared to the rest of the real Beach Boys. Mr. "nip & tuck", in his vain attempt to look younger has tightened his skin to the level of Joan Rivers or Za Za Gabor and will soon not me able to move his mouth, eyes or eyebrows. Ever wonder why he has "beady" eyes? That's what extreme vanity and ego will do for you.  Roll Eyes

OSD is guilty of "looks-ism".  Very classy and enlightened too!  Do you also hate based on race, gender, sexuality, etc, ??

Thanks, Amy but the best reasons to skip it are myKe luHv and Charlie which are both very old news.

Wrong again, OSD.  Lots of interest in this show and it will be watched by many!

I'll even admit that I think Endless Harmony is one of the few highlights on the KTSA album

Me too.

Well I guess if Bruce did such a lousy job with it, Brian could have helped him out, you know, being in the employ of Equinox and all.  Oh, er, never mind....

Also I think the changing the car lyric reference was an attempt to make the song more contemporary in nature....though it was hardly noticeable in the first place....
130  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why no new album in 1975? on: March 14, 2017, 04:49:12 PM
I feel like there was no single release then because they did not feel like they did have an album together.  Why release a single without an album to be pushed by said single?  Having said that, I think yes, perhaps they should have released It's OK as a single in 75....if anything, it may have been super-goosed up the charts as a result of there being no other actual new product from the band being released in that year, coupled with their massive "oldies" revival.  That was a missed opportunity...the subsequent late release of IOK in the LATE summer surely hurt that song's chances of becoming a larger hit...talk about Bad Timin', right up there with the belated release of Child of Winter.  Who the hell was running this band??
131  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Who Arranged 'Be With Me'? on: March 11, 2017, 01:26:03 PM
Disappointing that it was Carter on guitar if not Carl.  I had always hoped in my earlier fandom days that it was Carl on Bluebirds solo also, but I guess in my heart of hearts I knew it wasn't!  Could Carl play much of anything outside of his surf/C. Berry style of guitar??  I always felt that the Boys were pretty severely limited as a self-contained musical combo and did not grow in that regard like the Beatles/Stones.  This surely hurt them in the long run....

I thought David Letterman was dead....
133  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Surviving audio/video/photo documentation of The BBs vs. other bands on: March 10, 2017, 02:44:43 PM
They are just an old, old group which pre-dated much modern technology and then later on did not have the sense or opportunity to exploit it when it became available.  And really just a period of dire public disinterest anyway from 67 to 70 probably no kind of promo or media coverage could have helped them much then.  I have always thought the BBs to have been very poorly managed as a business, even when they were at the height of their popularity.  As individuals they did not seem to have a sense of awareness as to how to promote themselves....always seemed to me a little family band that accidentally almost got humongous based upon their music mostly and also association with the huge surfing fad of the early sixties.  They were on a label that early on did not understand youth culture or its music, even did not promote the Beatles very early on (American Capitol).  So the label was not helpful, the family management was not helpful and again, by being early on the music scene they suffered from not having the marketing infrastructure to promote them successfully.  Not that any of the other groups from that time period were especially well managed either...just must have been assumed they were all going to go away pretty quickly...and many of them did!

Count me as one who thinks they should have done a name change at some point...to this day they are not taken seriously by many based upon the name alone...

TM is known to mentally handicapped person aging and as he seems to practice it regularly, that might help to explain lack of wrinkle, etc.  Though in that 'bug-eyed" photo, he has his wyes wide open which minimizes the appearance of crow's feet.  I'm a similar age and don't have many wrinkles....just stay out of the sun, drink a lot of water, watch your diet and so forth.  I think Mike looks pretty good for his age, but not outstandingly so.  Brian, on the other hand does not look well....just has not taken care of himself, unfortunately.

Never cared much for it.  Too portentous and pretentious.  And the vocal is too precious.  Never did much care for the obvious statement songs by the Boys and Lord knows Surf's Up had enough of them....
136  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Brian's official lead vocal on \ on: March 03, 2017, 02:01:11 PM
I think "She's Still a Mystery" (Lovin' Spoonful) would have been a good song for the BB's to cover.
137  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Who Arranged 'Be With Me'? on: March 03, 2017, 01:59:34 PM
It was arranged by Van McCoy.

So much for the Brian as young Mozart, having to recycle the same riffs repeatedly.....of course very young Mozart did recycle riffs ad nauseam, but then, he was like only 4 years old or so....Brian is King Mozart in Reverse!
139  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Why are Wondermints records so hard to find? on: February 24, 2017, 02:19:54 PM
After reading the above replies, it is apparent no one knows why Wondermint records are so hard to find.....Also, I find it kind of sad that they largely consigned themselves to being BW's backup band.

No hits and terribly annoying to listen to.  The vocals are too precious, I can see why this stuff wasn't released....

Shortenin' Bread!  Goofy enough to have been on Love You.  Would have made a better final track on that album than on LA.

The BBs have to have the most f'ed up jacked up fanbase of all time!
145  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What did Bruce and Jack disagree over? on: January 28, 2017, 12:59:30 PM
I always kind of wished that at some point during the seventies, Mike would have been shunted aside to appear  live only during the encore on the early sixties stuff he sang lead on and that the rest of the group had performed more progressive material during the main part of the concert.  Yes, I know this was the strategy early in the seventies, to do mostly recent material during the pre-encore stuff.  But of course that changed rather abruptly.  I guess you would still have needed his voice for the vocal blend even during the more ambitious tunes, but having his bald old head and scraggly old beard out front and hoppin' around like a geriatric Jagger sure didn't help out their hipness quota during this time period.  Al wasn't exactly a fashion plate either...
146  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Keepin' The Summer Alive on: January 24, 2017, 02:34:02 PM
I do remember being mocked by the owner of a mom and pop record store for wanting to purchase this album from him!  That was kind of the prevailing attitude regarding Les Bois around that time period, at least in my experience....I bought it anyway and was so disappointed in it that I thought maybe he was right!
147  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Was Student Demonstration Time an attempt at propaganda? on: January 23, 2017, 04:32:05 PM
I think Mike was just making a common sense observation that if you go to a demonstration a riot might break out, see the Washington DC riots at the inauguration for a recent example.  Also he is correctly noting that it might be dangerous or as another group sang, apparently without censure from this forum, "four dead in Ohio...how many more?".  To me the fail of the song lyrically was the "martyrs earned a new degree, the bachelor of bullets".  Not funny, but I do think it was more an example of an attempt at ill-advised Hawthorn So Cal humor than anything else, that line.  Is hard to believe someone didn't edit that out of the song though...Actually though I hate the whole damned song because it is irritating, the sound of Mike like he's singing through a bullhorn, sonically sticks out like a sore thumb in the album's context, the wailing sirens, the fact that they just changed the lyrics to an existing song ala Brian with Surfin' USA, though his exercise was tons more artful.  The propaganda content or construct of the song was pushing the idea that the BB's actually gave a crap about demonstrations, the movement, etc.  I happen to think this was probably a big fat load....just don't think it was really that big a deal to them, this was just marketing at work....trying to make the group seem hip politically when it was doubtful they even voted, IMHO.

Not much in this interview....
149  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Keepin' The Summer Alive on: January 19, 2017, 01:02:20 PM
Keepin' the Summer Alive should have been the lead single off this album.  I disliked Sunshine, School Days (one of their worst covers ever) and both When Girls Get Together and Livin' with a Heartache seem like they will never end and are pretty lame at any length.  Oh Darling was a pale GOK imitation and the God Only Knows How I Love Only You chorus or refrain is truly grating in a Mike Love quoting the title of Good Vibration for the Looking Back with Love single.  Oh, and Mike's nasal vocals on Santa Ana Winds pretty well single-handedly sunk that track, though I'm not sure the public was ready for another Al Jardine folk excursion at any time in the ahem, 80's.  The rest of the album was palatable enough, but definitely I have to agree with the Rolling Stone review assessment that the Beach Boys were now a rock and roll wax museum.  Perhaps that is what spurred the next album to be an attempt at modernity, albeit mostly a failed attempt....
150  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Mike is kind of playing the inauguration.... on: January 17, 2017, 04:01:24 PM
Good, I think it is wonderful that he is "kind of playing the inauguration".  Sort of like how Obama kind of played being the president.....but mostly just played around and vacationed on our tax dollars.
