He will claim it would have had a number one hit like kokomo if only it had his lyrics. That's the thing. If NPP actually generated a number one hit, I don't know if Mike could take it. Honestly. While I don't see a number one hit happening, who knows. Stranger things have happened... A number one single is virtually impossible. A number one album is nearly impossible. But a relatively high chart placement on the album charts (Top 50, maybe even Top 20, and in a perfect storm Top 10) for NPP is possible. The thing is, TWGMTR hit #3 and Mike minimized that in an interview, which showed either an unwillingness to relent that Brian can or should write the bulk of the material without Mike, and/or a gross lack of understanding of how charts are tabulated and how the industry trends are going. It seemed to me to be some of both. When was the last time the Beach Boys had "sustained" success on any chart (as in, I dunno, staying in the Top 5 or 10 on the singles or albums charts for numerous weeks)? Even "Kokomo" was #1 for like one week or so, right? In any event, I don't think Mike would have a nervous break down if NPP hit #1. Maybe behind the scenes he would be supremely annoyed or irked. But if that happened and he was asked about it, I would imagine the response would be along the lines of his statement about "The Right Time." The charts are so fragmented nowadays, it basically means nothing to chart high. It's like being the best ballerina in Cincinnati...who gives a sh*t?

Here's how the process goes for me, personally. I hear a new song (of any genre, by any artist, and regardless of whether or not I'm aware of context), and one of three things happen:
a) I'm blown away. b) I'm underwhelmed, but the song grows on me over time (and can even become a favorite). c) I'm underwhelmed and it doesn't grow on me. Added context may help me appreciate it more, but greater appreciation does not equal greater enjoyment.
Pretty sure that's the case for everyone. There are no other options.

it's on rhapsody now.......the Professor understands the genre and the playfulness; it sounds a bit like new order and late bad YES or Bananarama--pole-dancer music in Thailand. It's not a disaster (well, it is), but I just don't like it. This kind of thing only makes the professor long for a BB album. I could have lived with Pisces Brother and more song title checks from Mike, rather than to endure this. Got to go and turn off that awful sound--back to TRT and OSL to restore spiritual harmony.
This sounds nothing like New Order. There is no such thing as bad Yes...and it also sounds nothing like any Yes. Bananarama only wishes they sounded anything like this.

It's actually a very good tune. It has that club vibe while still maintaining the beautiful melody that we've come to expect from Brian. It's no more of a departure than the Hollins collaboration is. It's better than all but MAYBE 5 or 6 tunes from any of the BW solo records leading up to this (admittedly not hard to do). Very well done, very catchy, 8/10.
Of course, now we will see this board's complete inflexibility at its finest today.

1. 1970 - Hearing "I Get Around" for the first time. Then the whole "All Summer Long" album, then a few months later, "Good Vibrations". Done blew my mind! 2. 1972 - Picking up the "Carl & The Passions/Pet Sounds" vinyl 2-fer for 2 bucks at a flea market. Played it to death along with subsequent albums through my Marantz amp (with gyro-tuner), Thorens turntable, and JBL L-100 speakers.
How did you not hear "I Get Around" until 1970? If you tell me you were young, then how did you have that killer audiophile sound system just 2 years later?

"The Right Time" backed with "Sail Away" on Capitol Records. Pretty cool, heh?
Record Store Day in the U.S. is April 18, 2015.
Uh, well, what's the big deal about this, other than maybe different graphics ? The LP arrives the 7th, so we'll have both tracks 11 days prior; unless they both turn out to be alternate mixes, it's something that should be released March 31st Are you not an American or English music fan, or what? You must be Canadian, Asian, or other European, otherwise you would understand what a "Record Store Day" release is. When all else fails, search Google (or Yahoo, or more likely, "AskJeeves", (because apparently Record Store Day is something too complicated for you), if your dinosaur ass doesn't understand the release of this particular single on this particular date) for "Record Store Day". To save your old & likely not long for this world self some time: Record Store Day is a day when many bands and artists release singles in limited quantities and/or formats not regularly found in stores, to help boost sales of what the general population/record company people consider a dying medium. This particular "Right Time/Sail Away" single is being released on April 18th to help provide a source of income to an independent record store that likely isn't getting the kind of business it was getting back when non-digital formats were the way people listened to music. I hope this helps, grandpa. Heh...who sh*t in your cocoa pebbles there sunshine?

Monkees are not comparable. Who By Numbers is a brave, abrasive album, well superior to Who Are You. I can only co spider the Who, Kinks and Rolling Stones as comparable to BBs given the time they started and finished, thus Dirty Work by the Stones stands as a wretched product equal to the worst of the BBs.
Dirty work is only "wretched" compared to OTHER STONES records. It is miles better than the BB worst stuff. In fact, you just stumbled upon the answer: The Stones have held a MUCH higher level of quality throughout their entire career than anyone else by a long shot. /thread Well, I can't think of a Kinks album that ranks as low as SIP. Soap Opera is my least favorite, but I wouldn't call it absolutely awful. People rip on Think Visual a lot but I LOVED that album.

I think Brian Wilson for his time was an innovative artist. Yes he drew influences (who doesn't) but "Pet Sounds", "Good Vibrations" and "SMiLE" then and now...it's hard to draw comparisons with those works. There really hasn't been anything like them in terms of approach or result since those recordings were made.
Gotta include "Love You" in that list as well.
