Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Searching for recent Al interview

Your mantra must've took you a-way.
Well I regret to report that upon further inspection that was not the interview I remember. Sorry for the premature call to celebration, it’s with a heavy heart that I beg for further sleuthing. The interview I heard was audio only, it was over the phone. It was definitely from 2022. Al discussed the 60th anniversary documentary and potential special. I think it was pre Brian’s summer tour with Chicago. Please tell me I didn’t dream this.

There are one or two spoken lines during that tape where Brian does sound remarkably like Al. I think all of the singing has always been easily believable as Brian. I think a bit of the speaking is what has thrown a lot of people off (in addition to a bit of Al-esque verbiage, and the weird choice of one singing one of Al's songs), to the point of various theories (such as both of them being on the tape and somehow both speaking at the same volume on the tape without talking over each other at all).
My big takeaway from this has always been that, rather than being some sort of pedantic, cranky debate, it's actually a good reminder of how much Al and Brian could sound like each other during the first 10-15 years of their career. Especially remarkable considering they're not related.
I think all of these guys, either just weirdly coincidentally, or because they picked up bits of singing style from each other, could almost all sound like various other members at times. Mike and Al could sound similar in the right circumstances, and even Mike and Brian now and then, especially circa '67.
Well said, I had an earth shattering realization a few years ago when I realized several vocals on the ‘Friends’ album were by Al that I had always attributed to Brian.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Searching for recent Al interview

I listened to a really good interview with Al earlier this year, but I can’t remember where I heard it. It was posted on his Facebook page and was about an hour long. I’ve scrolled back on his page as well as on here with no luck. I’m sure I’m just overlooking it but I’d really love to give it a another listen on my way to go see Al live tomorrow. Do any of you fine folks recall the interview I’m thinking of and where it might be found?

Ive been listening almost nonstop since noon. I’m a long time xm subscriber and it’s glorious to hear the boys get the full treatment, and I must say it puts Ch.18 to shame. The mix has truly been incredible, In My Room, Everything I Need, Spirit of America, Friday Night, It’s OK, Help Me Rhonda, Disney Girls, Little Girl (live 2012), He’s A Doll, Rock N Roll to the rescue, kiss me baby, TM song, Lullabye, Kokomo, remember walking in the sand, 409, like a brother, etc. I expected to hear the same ole strip, but was pleasantly surprised to find the kids are hip. I’ve been digging it, why on earth is it not permanent!?

Oh thank goodness! I have SiriusXM now, but didn’t at the time and I have been waiting years to hear this. I read a transcript at one point, but I’ve always wanted to hear the boy’s voices. I just spent an hour in heaven hearing a “new to me” interview with The Beach Boys, at this point it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. I wish a four hour uninterrupted interview could be done to capture all these guys stories before they’re gone. Hell, I could listen to Al, Mike, Brian and Dave just talk about 1962 for four hours let alone the rest of the epic tale.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: BEACH BOYS’ PARTY! Uncovered and Unplugged

I'm excited in some sense about this release. I've always enjoyed the "stripped" 'Party' recordings for what they are. There's a question I've had for awhile about those sessions that now seems as good a time as any to ask. Do we know who played what, in terms of instruments, for those sessions. I assume Al plays some, if not all, bass, and of course Carl on guitar. Perhaps this has been well documented elsewhere on the board, but I can't seem to find it. Did Brian, for instance, play any bass on 'Party'? Who played bongos? I can picture Mike running around with a tambourine. Can someone more knowing than I compile a list of "who played what" on the 'Party' album?

Can we get on topic again ? no harm in trying... If it were true that Bri is recording new versions of unreleased material, and it is also true that his team has learned their lesson from GIOMH and it will be done right this time, that would be great news to me. As we all know there is a wealth of possible choices. Any dream selections? the first ones that come to mind for me are: "I Do" (Sweet Insanity) "That Special Feelin" "Oh Lord" "I'm Beggin You Please" and what the heck how about a definitive recording of "Sherry She Needs Me" that one has been attempted so many times and never gotten right
