I think the exclamation point after 'Beach Boys' on the plaque is indicative of a fans/personal collection.

A little respect for your elders, sonny.
I looked up those terms on wikipedia, and as it turns out there was also this primative form of text messaging called "telegrams"  Roll Eyes

Well known fans from back in the day before this internetweb dofus, back when we used to communicate by phone and mail. Taber would recall the name too.
What is this phone you speak of, you mean the thing I use to surf the web, take pictures, and listen to music? Oh and I believe you left the "e" off of e-mail

Hey guys, I've been following this thread and I thought I'd throw in my thoughts, seeing as how things are heating up. All i want to say is that the reason the photo is interesting to me is that it is a mystery, nothing more. I'm interested in knowing, for as close to a fact as we can, what the story is. After all if we dont figure it out who ever will. I think there are certainly enough  things going on in the picture to give each side of the argument some ammo, but let's just try to solve the thing as much as it can be. No matter if you think it is ordinary or extraordinary, or (like me) try not to jump to either, it's fun to do some detective work. We need something until more smile news anyhow

31  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: interesting Brian Wilson interview 1988 on: March 30, 2011, 08:11:15 AM
I think it's interesting overall to hear the opinions/comments of fans (as I'm sure the people calling in would have been serious fans) from an era in which Brian had just emerged as a solo artist and there was still that one foot in the door with the Beach Boys (who were still a serious and successful unit). They could never have imagined that in twenty some years Brian would get married, tour extensivly, finish Smile, and have a steady stream of studio output as a solo artist.

Yep, he sings backgrounds on "When Love is Dying." I love that song though critical opinion is divided. Elton said that when Brian came to the studio he and Leon hugged each other for about a minute and a half.

in the liner notes it also says that Brian arranged the vocals for that song. Brian's contribution to that song is certainly a very good listen

Shouldn't have to credit him and kiss his butt every effing time you post something here, eh?
citing a source isnt really kissing someones butt, it's just giving credit where it is due. Ethics.

Kinda - there's a 1967 "H&V" where Brian's noodling at the piano between takes and he plays something which is a good part of the main "SMITC" verse riff.

interesting to know

I'm sure this has been seen by all here but man what a great video. The upload date is recent so I thought it was worth posting. Here we have the boys in  their element; on television at the height of their national appeal, in the midst of the rock revolution. This is the essence of the Beach Boys. For whatever reason it is that we have all gathered here to share our obsession of their music, it all births back to moments like this. Forget, for a moment, all the history and events that followed. Mike Love: Mr Front Man, milking the camera and oozing his energy across teenage america. Dennis: pounding a strong California beat in the face of the british invasion, Brian Wilson: in charge, singing his heart out and driving the root of the music,  with a glimmer of shyness and artistic moodiness. Al and Carl driving away with youthfull guitar strokes. It  has that "rushed" quality that often occurs when a group is fighting to be heard. Forgive me if I melodramatize such things but as someone who at a young age grew to love the early Beach Boys and the 'Concert' album, this reminds me why i feel deeply in love with them
38  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Essential Album Fillers List on: February 14, 2011, 12:00:33 AM
In my mind there is a distinction between "filler" and a song you just dont care for. I dont think "bad" songs are considered filler. Filler would be something that was clearly just thrown together in order to "fill" in time. "Bull Session" "Our Favorite recording sessions" and the medley from "party" come to mind.  it's important to keep in mind how large a role time played in record making back then. putting an album together was kinda like a pie chart. filler was just the stuff that was thrown into the leftover space.

*I seriously gotta wonder what's making Mike Love's voice sound so bad - old age isn't much of a reason given how much better Brian and Al sound.

over-touring maybe

Interestingly, Mr. Boyd has stated that he feels confident that previously unheard material exists in the hands of collectors and/or on the various acetates that were handed out, but is there any hope of obtaining these items? I hope so.

the Don't Worry Baby stereo mix a few years back proves that ya never know

Brian also did some sessions with the old Crew guys in '81 and '82 (at both Western AND Gold Star), but that stuff hasn't seen the light of day.

any info on what was recorded?

*bump* hey guys just discovered this. what a great thread! i recently visited LA and got terribly lost on Santa Monica Blvd. We ended up stopping in a parking lot and looking at a map only to realize we were very near Hollywood blv/Capital twr, etc. When i got home and did some research i discovered that parking lot was the former site of Gold Star.Needless to say it's spooky that i picked that exact spot to stop and rest. anyways i love reading this stuff about the process. every current producer in LA should be forced to learn this stuff.

from his facebook:

"The Beach Boys will be performing this Saturday (Feb 5) at A Concert for America – A Tribute to Ronald Reagan. We played at President Reagan's 2nd inaugural and thought it would be appropriate to honor him for his centennial birthday celebration in light of our anniversary coming up later this year. Brian and I were both invited by Mike...more details soon on how you can watch this concert online!"
