Just listened to it, fabulous live rendition, with Greg in very good voice!

Karn Evil 9? I have to check that.

I've met Ric Ocasek a few times. Seemed nice enough, if a bit withdrawn and quirky.
Your description reminds me of someone... Smiley
479  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Thoughts on Dennis (previous question) on: June 17, 2016, 06:50:07 AM
Yes, Denny had no I Get Around nor Kokomo under his belt. On the other hand, he had Little Bird, Slip on Through, Forever, Fallin' in Love, Sound of Free, Fourth of July, Cuddle Up, Baby Blue... He had POB and Bambu (which is released now, though late, and imho it's at least POB's equal... as much as Holy Man is River Song's equal).
He was severely subjected to the "you have a hit or you are nothing" attitude. Nobody will ever know how much he was damaged by that.

Ty Emily for your link. I'm fully convinced that the diagnosis is correct and Brian was genetically (AND environmentally) predisposed to develop the illness. I'm also convinced that Brian is perfectly right when he strongly advises people not to "do drugs", and he is talking from horrible personal experience.
My own very short experience in my youth was much less horrible, thankfully, but scary enough.
481  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Adult Child on: June 16, 2016, 06:54:27 AM
I think it's a shame that Adult Child was never released. If properly finished, it had the potential to be as good as Love You. Just as creative and quirky, but in a different way. Now, it would be a great release even in its unfinished state.
On the other hand, it would polarise fans even more than LY.

Ah, Prague... such a fantastic city. Maybe my fav among those I have visited. 3D

484  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: I Love Kokomo on: June 14, 2016, 05:18:26 PM
If Brian had written it and released it on his debut album, everyone would still be raving about what a fantastic return to form it was and how genius it was etc.

Bull. If that were true, nobody would criticize GIOMH or  Imagination, just to name two

Perhaps not IF either of those albums had gone to Number One.
A world where GIOMH is a number one album isn't a world I'd like to live in!
Have to agree on that too...

if Kokomo wasn't the hit it was, Mike Love's interviews would be only 'half' boring.
Maybe. Or maybe he'd have found another personal "meme".
485  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: I Love Kokomo on: June 14, 2016, 03:27:28 PM
I was already middle age at the time, so, sorry, no Kokomo teen surfin' sunshine nostalgia for me.
Said that, I find Mike's "Aruba Jamaica etc." insanely catchy. I don't love Mike, but love his bass/baritone voice. No voice says "Beach Boys" to me more than Mike's bass/baritone.
On the sax solo, I agree 100% with Billy. On the rest, I'm on a fence (Carl's voice is great as always, of course).
On the whole, a happy, catchy song which deserved to be a #1 hit more than many others.
Great art it isn't, but I like listening to it and even dancing a little to it, once in a while.

Airplane's coda. It's already such a great song, then the coda comes, totally unexpected.

One of the worst sentiments ever.

There are too many people in that board who caused a lot of drama here, or at least did their best to fan the flames, and are now saying they switched because of too much drama here.

The "alternate" melody for "Do You Like Worms" Brian sings for (ALAS!) too few seconds in Disc 3 of the Smile Sessions.

I'm liking this thread a lot, from the title onwards. Please let it stay here! Smiley

"Fairy Tale Music" in the GV box set is one of my favourite music tracks by anyone.

Hi all! Unsurprisingly, I am the same thorgil who posts now and then on the Brian Wilson board. Thanks to the admin and mods for their great work and for accepting my membership, and to the members for years of great info and good reading. Have a good one everybody!
