Hey Jude - I am dealing strictly with the contents of the book.
Okay, filledeplage. Since you have read the entire book, I have a question for you. In the CBS news interview, Mike says this: “Yeah. She once told me that ‘Brian’s not your partner. I’m your f****ng partner.’ That’s what she said,” Love said. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/beach-boys-mike-love-opens-up-drama-with-cousin-brian-wilson/Another poster who I assume has also read the book (I could be wrong, that's why I'm asking you) says that Melinda didn't speak these words to Mike. Rather, Melinda was speaking to Mike's wife and the exchange was more along these lines: Melinda "storms" to Jacquelyne, says Ambha can't sing a Brian lead Mike's wife replies, "Mike already discussed the matter with his partner, Brian.” And Melinda answers, “Mike’s not his fucking partner. I’m his fucking partner.”Two very different accounts of what I assume to be the same event. One version says Melinda told Mike that Brian wasn't Mike's partner, and that she (Melinda) was Mike's partner. The other version says that Melinda told Mike's wife that Mike's not Brian's partner, and that she (Melinda) was Brian's partner. Which of these two versions is in Mike's book? Cheers Did you really hope to get a real answer to a question by FdP? You are looking for a particular response. Sorry. You can get the book. No, I am not looking for any response. And am not going to read the book.

But really, what I want right now is Brian back in the studio recording as many songs as he can. (Without Joe Thomas!) I know that sounds selfish but I'd really love to get as much new material as possible while Brian's still up to it.. Me too! Thirded! Nothing in the current world of music has the power to excite me like new music by Brian & C - better if actually new, but in absence of that covers will do! * * As long as it's no more Disney songs.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What would have happened to SMiLE outtakes/scraps had the album been finished?

I think Smile, if released in 1967, would have been as big of a hit as the Heroes & Villains single. The success of "Good Vibrations" was actually a freak, due to nothing like that having been heard before. But 1967 saw the release of "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn", "Are You Experienced", "Disraeli Gears", "Surrealistic Pillow", "Days of Future Passed", "Strange Days" etc. Those would have been Smile's competitors, even more than "Sgt. Pepper". The latter, as I remember, was hailed as no breakthrough, just another excellent record by the Beatles, but already slightly unfashionable. "Smile" would have been better than any of those, but how many would have understood that? Its mainly acoustic, chamber music approach would have had no chance at the time, imho. The time for barbershop quartets (or quintets) and plucked violins was out. It was the time for heavily distorted guitars and grand organ and mellotron soundscapes. Let's also consider that a 1967 Smile would have been somewhat half-baked, as Brian simply had not the technology available to fully realise it in that time frame, according to his wishes (= a whole album made like "Good Vibrations").
But to answer the question: I think nothing much would have happened with the remaning outtakes and scraps. It's not like there would have been a "Cabinessence" or a "Surf's Up" waiting to be released. Maybe we could have had another good pastiche like "Cool Cool Water".

Welcome from a fellow Love You lover! I was a huge BB fan as a kid, then stopped listening to them in 1968 (last BB song I listened to at the time was "I Can Hear Music") and resumed 30 years later. Why did I stop? Misinformation. In the backwoods of Europe the word was they had disbanded about 1969, after their leader, Brian Wilson, had "been deafened by playing bass at too high a volume". I switched to other things, but always cherished my "Smiley Smile", which I had received as a present. Why did I resume? I was loking for other things in my fav music shop and suddenly I hear Mike's unmistakable bass voice... they were playing the Good Vibrations box set. I forgot what I was looking for and bought it. Some hours later, I heard the Smile section... and here I am.

For me, the greatest "missing piece" mystery is... what would have been the lead vocal for "Worms"? The BWPS version, Roll Plymouth Rock, is epic and wonderful, but I am convinced that the 1967 version would have been after the tantalising, much more uptempo snippet Brian sings in Disc 3 of the Smile Sessions.

Well, well... just when I was thinking that nothing could surprise me any more. But in a sense, I'm happier now. As a bit of an outsider, the rift in Beach Boys fandom never ceased to amaze me. I mean, Brian vs Mike? It's like being King Crimson fans (which I am, btw) and having an ongoing "Robert Fripp vs Richard Palmer-James*" rift. Now I know what's behind that artistically absurd "Brian vs Mike". Or more aptly, got definitive confirmation of my suspicions. Said that, I'm sorry for all the people who have been bullied and threatened. Smile F. Brian, I always knew you are really Melinda, and that OSD is really Joe Thomas. As for me, I am really Jeff Beck, that's the reason I think so highly of him. On a more serious tone: Jay (Ognir Rrats), please stay with us. Billy and Craig are doing an outstanding work. Whatever the Lovesters may say on the BS board, this one is healthier, and friendlier, than ever. * Nothing against good old Richard, of course.

Tried posting over there and already got a threatening Private message. These f*ckers take after AGD well.
Of course they do. The blind leading the blind. I'll try not to get offended by the both of you. I, like many others, post on both boards and have never, and would never stoop so low as to start calling everyone f*ckers. Billy, you are a mod on this board and should not be encouraging abuse of posters on this board, and joining in. It lacks class. When someone gets a message saying they "will come looking for you ", is that classy? Or is it not offensive to you because it's us? Considering the "mega-mod" there once threatened to burn one (admittedly annoying) member's house down and telling me that if one of the other members where to disappear since he knows where she lives, well...it explains a lot, actually. As I said before, I don't care if people post at both boards. I do have an issue with lying and hypocrisy. Makes me SO happy of my staunch "never disclose no personal info whatsoever" policy. A couple of close friends know my real name and whereabouts, and that's it.
