Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: beach boys can be considered better than beatles?

Okay so I defintley had to voice my opinion, I had just posted a thread about this awhile back. So personally I think that The Beach Boys are 10x better and always were & will be. People were just so fascinated by "Ohh look...a band with odd hairstyles from another country!" Thats my personal opinion...I get alot of flack for that but oh well. It doesnt mean I'm going to keep my mouth shut. And also like someone mentioned Dennis' qoute...thats SOOOOO TRUE!!! And these Beatles fanboy/girls need to know & understand that. The Beach Boys' growth was stunted by the record industry. No one wanted to see them develop & grow. They wanted to see them with their striped shirts & surfboards [not that I have a problem with that!] Dont get me wrong, please...I do like The Beatles, and quite a bit. But they can never compare with The Beach Boys..and I know many of you may disagree. The only reason why half the younger generation even likes The Beatles is because you can find a 8 dollar Beatles shirt at Wal-Mart or JC Penny & because you see many celebrities touting The Beatles name. Therefore it has become super cool to like The Beatles. Its become commericialized & ridiculous. I'll take The Beach Boys ANY day over The Beatles

I was born in 52 so i grew up with BB in their prime while living in southern california at the same time as BB did.. 1st time i heard them was on either KHJ or KFWB am rock stations..Spring 62 on santa monica beach..Surfin then SS + 409..My reaction was who the heck are THOSE guys..!.. By the time spring 63 came around + SUSA came out i was totally fried by their sound..I came to them cause of BW falsetto..PERIOD..I had NEVER heard a sound so perfect like that..There was no legend back then just the music. What a year that was for BB..SUSA..SG..LDC..LSN...BTTYS..IMR..Pluse the 3 hits from the year before..What a string of hits..!!....They have a spirt to their music that no one can touch..The greatest vocal group of the 20th century..IMHO..
Great story! Your so lucky to have been able to experience that. Lol I cant stress it enough, I was born in the wrong time! Oh & I totally agree with the last part!!!

Oh I remember this day like it just happened... I was about 5 and got my first casette player. I wanted tapes to play right away so I begged my mom to take me to the store so I could get some tunes to play on my totally rad pink casette player She told me I could only get 2 to start off with. First one was Elvis' greatest hits and the second one was...yes...you guessed it: Endless Summer. It's been true love ever since! I swear I played that tape til it broke lol...

Ok I defintley have to post my opinion:D Dennis & Brian are my favorites. They have totally different looks but equally gorgeous [in my eyes]. I never used to think Carl was cute but as I got older, I totally see his appeal. Especially in the late 60s! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Brian had the adorable smile & ideal height, Denny had the amazing facial structure & body and just that totally adorable rugged/mischevious look, & Carl has such sweet eyes & a cute smile. Thats my take on the Wilson boys! All gorgeous in their own right.

Thanks. I tried to avoid message boards, as things can be misconstrued and attacked. You folks have been wonderful. I had a lot of time and personal experiences to sort through over my lifetime. I truly regret being too young and inexperienced to understand Marlilyn's, and her family's, actions. I was unkind to them in my thoughts (although I don't think anything was published), as I thought I was defending Brian, as his friend. On the other hand, they were unkind to me, although they never knew me, and I dont' blame them, maybe they thought the same. It was an overwhelming time. We were all not just young, but I think no one can understand the immensity of fame, and what it demands. It's a very tall mountain.
The truth is, many people have loved Brian and the Boys. It was a tall task for us, and many of us failed. Imagine what a tall task it was for them, really living it...Jeez!
So, when you talk about them, do it with the love that the music conveys. They deserve it. And when you talk about everyone around them, look at the love in their eyes these days (like his band, family and friends), and know that we all have treasured them and loved them wholeheartedly over the years, in our own ways. David Leaf, certainly, Ed Roach, sure, among the people I knew well, as well as many of Brian's current friends who truly love him, whom I won't mention without permission. If you could have seen his band, Van Dyke Parks, and his loving friends after the first performance of "Smile" in London (pretty much all in joyous tears), you couldn't miss it. If you had seen Paul McCartney and his band crying at the "Smile" presentation a few days later, you also couldn't have missed it, along with George Martin, and many others.
With all the silly daily drama, how bad can that be? All I have to say is, just look at the Wilsons' kids, Carnie, Wendy, Dari, Delaney, Dylan (sorry, I don't know the new baby's name), Scott, Jennifer, Carl B., Michael, Gage, Justyn and Jonah (sorry I don't know Mike and Al's kids as well, so can't comment)...and the joy of the songs, what other legacy do you need?...Clearly, there ws a lot of love.
Debbie
Great post Debbie:) Thanks so much for being here! Hope to see more of your posts:)

I also perfer the mono mix of "All I Want To Do"...omg it sounds killer in mono! So much raw energy!!!
Strictly speaking, there is no mono mix of "All I Want To Do" - the 'mono' 20/20 released in the UK isn't a pukka mono mix but a simple fold-down of the stereo mix. That is to say, no-one mixed the master in mono from the original 8-tracks. Thanks I didnt know that!

I hope this will never happen. Wild Honey is one of my favorite BB records, but compare the stereo remix of Let the wind blow to the mono album version. There's an organ part missing or buried deep in the mix so the original effect isn't there anymore, Carl's vocals are way too loud, the dynamics of the original creation are destroyed. It's rewriting history and not even in a good sense. They obviously put a lot of effort in mixing back in 1967 and it shows. The one thing I would love to hear is the original mix without the technical noises, for example in Country Air or the fade of I'd Love Just Once To See You. But please, stop with those stereo remixes. Please let me wonder + Then I kiss her in stereo also fail to recapture the original magic.
HoneyBee, I understand your view but if you don't like them you aren't forced to buy it or listen to it (if it's on a set like Hawthorne, CA). I do agree with you that some of the stereo mixes fail to reproduce that magic in the original mixes (as I said before Please Let Me Wonder is one of the main ones that I prefer the mono version by a LONG way - not even close) but I still find them interesting listening experiences and of course if I don't like them then I just listen to the original. Easy. I also perfer the mono mix of "All I Want To Do"...omg it sounds killer in mono! So much raw energy!!!

I really think Mike has a good voice. I don't see much harm in him having the rights to the Beach Boys name, personally. It would be nice if Brian did, but it still wouldn't be the actual Beach Boys even if Brian could use that name, even though Brian pretty much was the band. It would most likely just be him and his band, right? That's basically what Mike and Bruce are doing.
I see what people mean about biographers and people in general being more interested in Brian, but look at what the man's been through. Sensational stories like his are what sells, and that applies to everything. Brian's breakdown, drug use, Landy's involvement in/takeover of his life, etc. all while being the mastermind behind one of the greatest bands of all time makes Mike's life look like a walk in the park, which isn't interesting to most people.
That being said, the two just have some different interests, anyways. Brian likes being known as Brian Wilson, not just a Beach Boy. Mike recently said that being a Beach Boy was the biggest honor and the most fun he could ever have, and that's just what he wants to do. So really, it's working out fine for them.
Nicole I agree...well I still dont think Brian is the Beach Boys though, but overall I totally agree with what you all said. I get so tired of people bashing on Mike & Bruce's Beach Boys. If they enjoy doing it, people attend the shows...leave em alone.

Just goes to show how well respected they both must have been way back in 1966-67.
Bruce was definitely considered a hip and talented guy back then. And it's pretty obvious that Brian Wilson was one of his biggest fans. Hell, Bruce probably sang more on Pet Sounds and Smile than Dennis. I always thought it was a shame that Bruce didn't make the front cover of Pet Sounds, considering that he was at the photo shoot at the San Diego Zoo. Why wasnt he included? I always wondered that...
