I just can't believe some of you think those cheesy Dick Reynolds-arranged tunes on the Christmas album are better than something the originals or Auld Lang Syne. Santa Claus is Comin' to Town is the worst example of this. That song's great for about 12 seconds, good for another 5, and then that stupid stupid stupid circus theme comes in. Hell, the song quotes POP GOES THE WEASEL! Ugh.

Those arrangements are great. As for quoting Pop Goes the Weasel, so did Sonny Rollins (for one), in the middle of a brilliant improvised solo. No harm in that. I think they're fun.

I LOVE everything on Surfin' Safari. I can't criticize anything on that album and feel good about myself.  It's just so care-free and innocent.  To say that anything on it is "bad"...is sad.   Cry

Surfin' Safari!!
409!!
Surfin!
Summertime Blues!
Ten Little Indians!!  Ten Little Indians for pete's sake!!
Denny's first vocal on Miss America!
Chuga-Lugging root beer!  Tell me who else, where else would you find such a song... The Stones?  No.
Cuckoo, cuckoo!!   WHAT?!  Cuckoo clocks?!
Wearin' the shift, wearin' the shift!
Moooooon Dawg
Heads I win....
and County Fair!!

Every song is pure.  I think they mailed a lot of the Surfin' USA songs in...at the behest of Capitol I'm sure....but not here!!!!!  It's like SMiley SMile BEFORE the drugs!!!!!  It would be years before Brian and the boys would be allowed to do whatever they wanted for the whole album.  There's only a few Brian BB's albums that are "untouched" like this....Love You, Pet Sounds, SMiley.

Man, I always thought I was the only one who loved Please let me Wonder the best! I think its my favorite of all songs in many ways. Remember first hearing this in the American Band Documentary where Brian sings live with himself (I think as part of a medley) and it was awesome.

Stars and Stripes-haven't heard anything from it, don't ever want to!

Give it a listen; there's a couple of worthwhile tracks on there, including:

"Don't Worry, Baby" - Lorrie Morgan
"I Can Hear Music" - Kathy Troccoli
"The Warmth Of The Sun" - Willie Nelson
"Sloop John B" - Collin Raye
"Caroline, No" - Timothy B. Schmit

I also like "Long Tall Texan" by Doug Supernaw, but I'll never win THAT debate. police

That's a great premise, Glenn.  Least favorite.  I suggest someone start a thread on that.  Some are obvious (Bull Session for ex.) but some might be interesting.

I start about one thread a year on any board and I just did it above so don't look to me.

The uptempo songs are awful but the ballads are OK. I love Willie Nelson's version of Warmth Of The Sun (almost as good as the original IMO) and Brian's backings on Caroline No are pretty cool too.

I really can't listen to Stars and Stripes. I don't even count it as a real Beach Boys album except technically.

While I agree that some of the actual performances on Stars and Stripes are not as bad as the album's overall reputation, I would even take Summer in Paradise over this any day. I reckon the group had high hopes of hitting the Country charts and though it would've been nice if they had had another smash after "Kokomo" I'm very glad they didn't succeed with this particular concept.
